    Abstract: A compression ignition engine can be quickly and easily converted into a dual fuel engine simply by adding a gaseous fuel supply system, by disconnecting the governor actuating lever from the throttle pedal, and by adding an electronic controller which controls the operation of the gaseous fuel supply system and which sets the governor actuating lever at a position which causes the engine to deliver pilot fuel at a desired quantity. Operation is simplified by setting the governor using a droop control technique inherent in governor operation. The system can be automatically calibrated to assure the supply of fuel at a precisely controlled quantity per stroke at all engine speeds. The pilot fuel injection system of the resulting engine is non-invasive and permits inherent safety features of the governor to be retained.

    Abstract: An electronically controlled fuel supply system for an internal combustion engine. The timing of the commencement of fuel injection into each combustion chamber is not fixed relative to the rotational position of the camshaft or other engine components. A unit injector assembly associated with each combustion chamber includes a control module and an accumulator type injector module. The control module contains a solenoid valve and, in some embodiments, a hydraulic pressure intensifier. The accumulator type injector module contains an injector nozzle, a hydraulic accumulator, and a non-return valve for admitting liquid fuel under pressure into the accumulator. In operation, an electrical control system supplies an electrical signal to the control module an appreciable portion of the engine cycle in advance of the time when fuel injection is to be initiated in the particular combustion chamber.

    Abstract: A fast-response solenoid valve. A three-way form has a body with three successive separated openings interconnected by a linear fluid pathway having two chambers lying between successive pairs of openings, each with a movable ball and a ball seat in respective ball cages. Each cage has a cylindrical exterior wall in snug engagement with the wall of the linear fluid passageway, a seat at one end, and a tanged retainer portion at the other end, so that, each ball is retained in its cage for limited axial movement between its seat and its tanged portion. A cylindrical non-magnetic tube is aligned with the linear fluid pathway, one end of the tube abutting a portion of the body. A non-magnetic end plug is held at a fixed position at the distal end of the tube, and a magnetic guide plug is held at a fixed position in the tube spaced away from the end plug. A solenoid plunger is in said tube, movable in between the two plugs and in connection with a plunger pin that engages one of the balls.

The speed-varying means may comprise a pair of hydraulic units hydraulically interconnected so that one serves as a pump while the other serves as a motor and vice versa, one of the units having a variable stroke and being the one clutchable to either the input shaft or to the second sun gear.     Abstract: This transmission has a first planetary gear assembly having first input means connected to an input shaft, first output means, and first reaction means, and a second planetary gear assembly having second input means connected to the first input means, second output means, and second reaction means connected directly to the first reaction means by a reaction shaft. First clutch means, when engaged, connect the first output means to an output shaft in a high driving range. A hydrodynamic drive is used; for example, a torque converter, which may or may not have a stationary case, has a pump connected to the second output means, a stator grounded by an overrunning clutch to the case, and a turbine connected to an output member, and may be used in a starting phase. Alternatively, a fluid coupling or other type of hydrodynamic drive may be used. Second clutch means, when engaged, for connecting the output member to the output shaft in a low driving range.

    Abstract: A relatively inexpensive simplified type of split-torque power transmission. A simple planetary gear assembly is employed having a carrier connected to the input with a set of planet gears, a ring gear, and a sun gear. Suitable speed-varying means are used, such as two variable-stroke hydraulic units, each having rotary shafts and driving relation therewith, the two units being hydraulically connected together so that one serves as a pump while the other serves as a motor, and vice versa. Two gear trains respectively connect the ring gear to the first rotary shaft and the sun gear to the second rotary shaft. A first clutch means connects the first rotary shaft in driving relation to the output means, and a second clutch means connects the second rotary shaft in driving relation to the output shaft. A three-range transmission and a four-range transmission are also shown.
