Patent number: 10731229Abstract: Methods and systems for pretreating lignocellulosic biomass are disclosed. An acid solution between 1% to 1.6% sulfuric acid is applied to the biomass. The biomass is subjected to an elevated temperature to cause the production of xylose, glucose, and furfural. Adjustments to temperature, acid concentration, and time can generate at least 80% or 90% of theoretical xylose, 45% or 50% of the theoretical glucose, and less than 4000 ppm of furfural in the xylose liquor. A portion of the resulting xylose liquor may be separated from the glucan solids. The xylose liquor, still highly acidic, can be recycled to reduce subsequent acid loading requirements. Makeup acid solution is added to the xylose liquor and subsequent biomass to ensure a proper solids to liquids ratio. The biomass is again treated to higher temperatures to yield sugars. The process may be repeated for each subsequent cycle.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 2018Date of Patent: August 4, 2020Assignee: POET Research, Inc.Inventors: William F. McDonald, Shannon Scott Urban, Jason L. Martin

Publication number: 20170191099Abstract: A system and method to treat biomass to make bioproducts such as biofuels and biochemical is disclosed. The systems are configured to treat a liquid component separated from biomass to yield sugars available to form a fermentation product or bio-product. The system and method comprises treatment and separation of process streams (e.g. liquids, solids, etc.) to produce bioproducts such as fuel and biochemical as well as to recover/reuse and utilize content of process streams. Lignin is separated from the bioproduct stream (e.g. a solids component) forming a recovered bioproducts; efficient removal of lignin facilitates productive operation of the system. The system disclosed is configured to recover and recycle acid (e.g. phosphoric acid) used as a concentrated acid in the process to pre-treat biomass (for bioprocessing). The acid used in the process is recycled and recovered in order to establish economically attractive biorefinery to make bio-products from biomass (e.g.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 4, 2016Publication date: July 6, 2017Applicant: Arbiom Inc.Inventors: William F. Publication number: 20170159076Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for fractionating a lignocellulosic biomass. More specifically, the present invention lies in the field of cellulose solvent- and organic solvent-based lignocellulose fractionation (COSLIF) of lignocellulosic biomasses. In this type of process, a cellulose solvent, such as phosphoric acid or an ionic liquid is used to disrupt the structure of cellulose in a lignocellulosic biomass. Subsequent washing and treatment steps are used to fractionate the biomass.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 4, 2016Publication date: June 8, 2017Applicant: Arbiom Inc.Inventors: Naga Vinod Kumar Bathula, Lisette Tenlep, William F. McDonald, Fan Hu, Aziz Ahmed
