  • Patent number: 5366745
Abstract: Apparatus for the low pressure carbonation of beverages by the consumer using a chemical source of carbon dioxide. Low carbonation pressures are achieved by significantly reducing the rate of carbon dioxide gas generation when compared to prior art carbonators. Carbon dioxide is generated by a chemical or chemical combination which will react with water, but does not significantly react when said water is frozen. Embodiment described uses chemical combination of edible acid, carbonate and ice. Reaction occurs gradually when ice slowly reverts to a liquid state. Carbon dioxide is generated in carbonation chamber (10). Gas passes through carbonator cap (12) and into the beverage contained within beverage vessel (16) thus causing carbonation. Chamber (10), cap (12) and beverage vessel (16) are all connected by gas tight means.
