  • Patent number: 4268572
Abstract: Sulfur-based roof shingles which consist essentially of a fibrous base mat coated on at least one surface with a plasticized-sulfur composition were found to have surprising flexibility and fire resistance when compared to similar asphalt shingles.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 23, 1979
Date of Patent: May 19, 1981
    Assignee: Chevron Research Company
    Inventor: William G. Toland
  • Patent number: 4068481
Abstract: A self-retaining roof bolt comprising an elongated U-shaped member having a pair of spaced legs which support a flat plate fitted over the U-shaped member and are held under transverse tension at ambient temperature by a grouting which becomes malleable at elevated temperatures. The roof bolt is installed in a roof hole by momentarily heating the leg sections, which causes the grouting to soften, releasing the tension on the legs and allowing them to separate and wedge against the roof hole walls. Thus, the bolt retains itself in the roof hole while the grouting cools. Upon cooling, the grouting re-solidifies, firmly securing the bolt.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 5, 1977
Date of Patent: January 17, 1978
    Assignee: Chevron Research Company
    Inventor: William G. Toland
  • Patent number: 4039725
Abstract: A composition comprising plasticized sulfur wherein the composition is prepared by steps including heating the plasticized sulfur to a temperature between 160.degree. C and 220.degree. C and then cooling the hot plasticized sulfur in liquid form below its normal melting point (freeze point) to thereby obtain a liquid, tacky, plasticized sulfur. Preferably the plasticized sulfur is brought to a temperature between about 170.degree. C and 210.degree. C and then cooled. The composition is useful as an adhesive and is useful as a binder in preparing conduit or pipe from laminated layers of paper-like material. The composition is also useful in preparing structures or structural members.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: August 2, 1977
    Assignee: Chevron Research Company
    Inventor: William G. Toland
  • Patent number: 4012545
Abstract: A manufacture comprising a plurality of fibers partially embedded in a solidified plasticized sulfur matrix with one end of the fibers extending outward from the matrix to form a turf or carpet-like surface.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 4, 1975
Date of Patent: March 15, 1977
    Assignee: Chevron Research Company
    Inventor: William G. Toland
  • Patent number: 3978173
Abstract: O,S-dimethyl phosphoroamidothioates are prepared by reacting in the liquid phase methyl phosphorodichloridite with methyl sulfenyl chloride in the presence of a lower alkanoic acid to produce O,S-dimethyl phosphorochloridothioate and subsequently reacting in the liquid phase the O,S-dimethyl phosphorochloridothioate with ammonia or an amine.

    Assignee: Chevron Research Company
Inventors: Gustave K. Kohn, Irene C. Huang, William G. Toland
  • Patent number: 3953192
Abstract: The caking tendency of ammonium salt compositions during storage is reduced by coating the compositions with a minor amount of a hydroxy-aluminum polymer.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 10, 1974

  • Patent number: 3944452
Abstract: A process for field preparation of a fibrous turf on a surface by steps including: (a) inserting fibers into a backing to obtain a backing with inserted fibers; (b) laying a receiving matrix on the surface; (c) bringing a portion of the backing with inserted fibers into connection with the receiving matrix so as to immerse the inserted fibers in the matrix; and (d) maintaining said portion of the backing stationary for a sufficient period of time so that the fibers will stay in the matrix upon removing the backing from the fibers.Preferably the receiving matrix is a thermoplastic substance comprising sulfur, especially plasticized sulfur.
