  • Patent number: 4238576
Abstract: Orthoesters are used to couple living homopolymers of monovinylarenes, and living copolymers of monovinylarenes and conjugated dienes. Novel coupled polymers are thereby produced.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4238202
Abstract: Carburetor detergency properties of hydrocarbon fuels are provided by nitrogen-containing organic compound-grafted, hydrogenated conjugated diene-monovinylarene copolymers.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 31, 1979
Date of Patent: December 9, 1980
    Assignee: Phillips Petroleum Company
Inventors: William J. Trepka, Richard J. Sonnenfeld
  • Patent number: 4158098
Abstract: Polyalkoxy monovinyl substituted aromatic compounds, such as 3,4-dimethoxystyrene, function as both comonomer and randomizing agent in organolithium initiated copolymerization of a conjugated diene with a monovinyl aromatic compound, such as of butadiene with styrene. The resultant polymeric product exhibits lower levels of block styrene than does a corresponding copolymer made in the absence of the dimethoxystyrene.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 4, 1975
Date of Patent: June 12, 1979
    Assignee: Phillips Petroleum Company
    Inventor: William J. Trepka
  • Patent number: 4145298
Abstract: Nitrogen-containing copolymers are prepared by the reaction of lithiated hydrogenated conjugated diene-monovinylarene copolymers with nitrogen-containing organic compounds. The nitrogen-containing copolymers are oil additives which combine the aspects of viscosity index improvers with dispersant properties.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 22, 1977
Date of Patent: March 20, 1979
    Assignee: Phillips Petroleum Company
    Inventor: William J. Trepka
  • Patent number: 4105714
Abstract: Alkali metal-terminated polymers of one or more alkadienes and of one or more vinyl-substituted aromatic monomers are effectively coupled by trichloro-, tribromo- or triiodo-s-triazine.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 19, 1976
Date of Patent: August 8, 1978
    Assignee: Phillips Petroleum Company
Inventors: William J. Trepka, Alvin C. Rothlisberger
  • Patent number: 4086406
Abstract: Lithium-initiated polymers are coupled with a vinylhalomethylarene such as vinylbenzyl chloride. Maximum molecular weight is obtained at about one mol of coupling agent for two mols of polymerlithium, indicating a major amount of the coupling to be in the form of about two polymerlithium entities being joined to one coupling agent. Excellent stability indicates little formation of branched polymer through carbon-lithium bonding. Consequently, the coupled polymer can be hydrogenated successfully to give a high molecular weight ozone-stable product.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 22, 1975
Date of Patent: April 25, 1978
    Assignee: Phillips Petroleum Company
    Inventor: William J. Trepka
  • Patent number: 4076915
Abstract: Treating a silicon-coupled or germanium-coupled conjugated diene polymer with a hydrocarbonlithium, -sodium, -potassium, -calcium, -magnesium, -zinc or -aluminum compound after the coupling step and prior to hydrogenation.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 8, 1976
Date of Patent: February 28, 1978
    Assignee: Phillips Petroleum Company
    Inventor: William J. Trepka
  • Patent number: 3948872
Abstract: A polymerization process for preparing homopolymers of conjugated dienes having decreased cis-content resulting from the use of organolithium compounds as initiators wherein 1,2-dialkoxybenzene is introduced in a quantity sufficient to decrease the cis-content of the homopolymers formed.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 25, 1971
Date of Patent: April 6, 1976
    Assignee: Phillips Petroleum Company
Inventors: William J. Trepka, Ralph C. Farrar
