    Abstract: The invention is directed to the characterization of an optical channel, such as an optical fiber, in an optical network. The method includes calibrating a transmitter by measuring its transmitter and dispersion eye closure (TDEC, in the case of non-return to zero optical (NRZ) optical systems or transmitter and dispersion eye closure quaternary (TDECQ, in the case of 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) optical systems). That calibrated transmitter is used to characterize the optical channel being tested by providing a measure of its stressed eye closure (SEC) or stressed eye closure quaternary (SECQ). A loss deficit for the optical channel can be calculated by subtracting the SEC or SECQ value from the maximum TDEC or TDECQ value.

The application then utilizes a database interface query function to access the queries in the lookups table. The query function uses the query name provided by the application to locate the corresponding query string in the lookups table. The query function then performs parameter substitution on the query string and sends the query to the database. The query results are then retrieved, formatted, and sent to the querying application. The present invention allows an application program to access data stored on databases organized by various database management systems which employ different query formats. Although the databases organize the data differently, the same content may be extracted by the present system. Changes to the database queries take place outside the application code in a simple text file that is loaded by the querying application.

    Abstract: A low-profile cutter assembly for use on a microscope and related cutting method are provided. The cutter assembly includes a support subassembly having a mounting ring for receiving and engaging the objective of a microscope. A cutter subassembly carried by the support subassembly is displaceable between a home and a forward position in response to actuation. Upon reaching the forward position, additional actuation causes the front end of the cutter subassembly to pivot toward the stage, thereby placing a cutter adjacent to or in contact with the specimen. By selectively actuating the cutter subassembly, multiple cuts may be performed, as necessary or desired for cutting a spore or isolating a particular specimen.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a method for database migration. It migrates a database in one single bulk migration without the loss of any data. It can accomplish bulk migration because it uses a wrapper script, which is a single instruction given at the command line, that automates, in succession, all the scripts required for the migration. Because the present invention migrates the entire database in one bulk, it uses very little system downtime. This is unlike prior art database migration schemes which may use not only a lot of system downtime, but requires the presence of a user during the entire migration. Because the present invention can be customized to work on various database models including production database models, it is an ideal database migration process, which various DBAs can use without the need to either alter their database, or change the procedure for the migration.

    Abstract: A headliner is a laminate of multiple layers. The layers include polyurethane foam, agricultural fibers, a decorative material, and a backing. The agricultural fiber is jute, sisal, or kenaf or mixtures thereof. The method of making the headliner laminate includes making the sheet of agricultural fibers incorporating a binder, saturating a foam layer with an adhesive, putting one sheet of agricultural fibers on each side of the foam layer, applying the decorative material and backing to one side each, and squeezing the layers together to distribute the adhesive to all the layers and laminate them.
