    Abstract: Disclosed is a method for sealing and affixing a component assembly for an electrical lighting device to a glass lamp envelope. The assembly used in the process comprises the component, such as an electrode lead wire and a solder glass perform. The process is useful, for example, in hermetically sealing and affixing lamp components, such as electrical lead wires and exhaust tubulation, to a low pressure fluorescent discharge lamp envelope having phosphor coating already applied thereto.     Abstract: The present invention is directed at a family of glasses capable of absorbing UV radiation and filtering yellow light in the visible region of the spectrum, the family of glasses having a composition consisting essentially, in terms of weight percent on the oxide basis, of: 55-95.7% SiO2, 0-28% B2O3, 0.5-18% Al2O3, 0-4% SrO, 0-13% BaO, 0-13% CaO, 0-8% MgO, 0-7.5% Na2O, 0-9.5% K2O, 0-1.5% Li2O, 0-1.5% Sb2O3, 0.4-4.5% Nd2O3, and 0.1-1% CeO2. Glasses of the present invention are capable of employment as envelopes for tungsten-halogen lamps and other high temperature light sources, as well as sealed-beam incandescent headlights. Also, the glasses can be used as for other applications where high contrast and enhanced visible properties of transmitted or reflected visible light can be a benefit, such as opthalmic glass, computer screens with enhanced contrast properties, or glass hosts for lasers.

    Abstract: A composite glass ceramic material which comprises silicon nitride (Si.sub.3 N.sub.4) whiskers in a glass ceramic material comprising nitrogen doped cordierite, which composite material has greatly increased strength at elevated temperatures, good microwave transparency, and good thermal shock resistance.The invention further comprises a method for manufacturing the composite material by blending ground nitrogen doped cordierite glass with between about 5 and about 50 percent Si.sub.3 N.sub.4 whiskers by weight of glass. The blend is then formed into a desired shape and is sintered at an elevated temperature of from about 1000.degree. to 1400.degree. C.The invention also includes the novel nitrogen doped cordierite glass and glass ceramic made therefrom.

    Abstract: The present invention is concerned with the production of sodium and/or potassium hydrosilicate glass bodies. The basis of the invention resides in the hydration of anhydrous sodium and/or potassium silicate glass bodies in aqueous alcohol solutions to impart enhanced mechanical strength and thermoplastic properties thereto. The hydrating process, which permits close control to be maintained over the water content absorbed in the glass, can be carried out in liquid solutions of water and relatively short chain, i.e. up to about five carbon atoms, aliphatic alcohols or in gaseous atmospheres of such solutions. An ion exchange reaction of Li.sup.+ ions or protons with Na.sup.+ and/or K.sup.+ ions can be promoted at temperatures above the transformation range of the hydrated glass, and an exchange of K.sup.+ ions for Na.sup.+ and/or Li.sup.+ ions at temperatures below the transformation range.
