  • Patent number: 5879398
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an acetabular cup prosthesis for implantation into a pelvic bone. A cup having a cavity for receiving a femoral head is formed of a polymeric material having a predetermined tensile strength. A backing is disposed about and attached to the polymeric cup. The backing has a porous construction defining interstitial pores, with the pores being sized to receive a portion of the polymeric cup therein and adapted for allowing ingrowth of the bone therein. The portion of the polymeric cup received within the pores results in an interface strength between the polymeric cup and the backing which is substantially equal to the tensile strength of the polymeric material.

  • Patent number: 5658348
Abstract: The acetabular implant of the invention includes a shell having a threaded polar hole with a liner having a threaded polar protrusion extending therefrom for threadable accommodation within the threaded polar hole. Further, the implant includes a locking ring carried by the shell for engagement with the liner. In use, the liner is screwed into the shell by the cooperating threads of the liner and shell. As the liner bottoms out in the shell, the locking ring slides into an annular groove formed in the outer periphery of the shell to lock the liner to the shell. The locking engagement of the locking ring prevents the liner from shifting laterally relative to the shell which therefore prevents the liner from rotating in a direction to loosen the shell relative to the liner. While it is preferred that the liner is formed from a metal, the liner may be formed from either a metal or a plastic dependant upon the clinical requirements for the patient.

  • Patent number: 5474560
Abstract: The insertion instrument of this invention includes a generally cylindrical handle portion and a cup engaging portion held in a spaced relationship by an arcuate intermediate portion. Handle portion includes a longitudinal throughbore and an impaction head. The cup engaging portion includes a rotatable threaded stud for threaded accommodation within a threaded hole of an prosthetic acetabular cup. The stud includes a head having a recess formed therein for accommodating a driving device. The longitudinal bore of the handle portion and the head of the threaded stud are placed in alignment such that the shaft of a screwdriver extending through the threaded bore is aligned with the head of the screw. Therefore, a surgeon using the instrument of this invention does not need to have a clear view of the threaded stud to attach a screw driver. This is especially useful after the surgeon has impacted the acetabular cup within a prepared acetabulum and needs to remove the insertion instrument.

  • Patent number: 4566448
Abstract: A ligament tensor and distal femoral resector guide includes an adjustable support member for mounting on a tibial cutting guide including a guide slot in which is reciprocably mounted a slide member having an arm extending outward therefrom for engaging the condylar notch between the femoral condyles and a screw member threadably engaging the slide member for adjusting the position of the slide member and arm relative to the tibia cutting guide head for establishing tension in the ligaments of a knee structure. A flat pressure plate is removably mounted in the slots of the tibia cutting guide head for engaging the sectioned tibia plateau for applying pressure to the tibia for tensioning of the ligaments. A cutting guide head for guiding the resection of distal femoral condyles is mounted on the adjustable support member.
