Patent number: 10204113Abstract: The present invention extends to methods, systems, and computer program products for reverse replication to rollback corrupted files. When a computer system detects that a copy of a file includes inappropriate content, the computer system can coordinate with other computer systems (e.g., in replicated storage system) to determine that a viable (e.g., clean) copy of the file exists. The computer system can access the viable copy and replace the copy that includes the inappropriate content with the viable copy. As such, a computer system can “reverse replicate” a file rather than break a synchronization relationship. Reverse replication can be used to rollback a copy of an infected file to another (possibly earlier) copy of the file that is not infected. Embodiments of the invention can be used to rollback data files, such as, for example, pictures, videos, documents, etc.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 2016Date of Patent: February 12, 2019Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Marc E. Seinfeld, Daron Spektor, William M. Zintel, Adrian M. Marinescu

Patent number: 9781142Abstract: The present invention extends to methods, systems, and computer program products for scanning files for inappropriate content during file synchronization. Embodiments of the invention are mindful of the order of operations when scanning files for inappropriate content and in subsequent file processing. In some embodiments, during synchronization, an intermediary server scans a file for inappropriate content. The file is not permitted to be fully downloaded to a client device until the scan determines that the file does not contain inappropriate content. In other embodiments, during synchronization, a client device scans a newer version of a file for inappropriate content. An older version of the file is not deleted until the scan determines that the newer version of the file does not contain inappropriate content. In further embodiments, server side scanning and client side scanning are both used to enhance capabilities for detecting inappropriate content.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2016Date of Patent: October 3, 2017Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Marc E. Seinfeld, Daron Spektor, William M. Zintel, Adrian M. Marinescu

Patent number: 7613828Abstract: Sending and receiving application or service data through an email transport for mobile computing devices occasionally disconnected from network connectivity. At a sending service or application, application or service data is intercepted from the application or service. The application or service data is packaged in an email message. The email message includes the application or service data within the email envelope and an identification of an application or service client to which the application or service data should be applied at a client computer system. The email message is sent through an email transport to a mobile client computer system which includes the application or service to which the application or service data should be applied. At the client the email message is intercepted. The data is extracted from the email envelope. The application or service client is identified. The data is routed to the appropriate application or service.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2007Date of Patent: November 3, 2009Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: William M. Patent number: 7441019Abstract: A universal plug and play (UPnP) device makes itself known through a set of processes—discovery, description, control, eventing, and presentation. Following discovery of a UPnP device, an entity can learn more about the device and its capabilities by retrieving the device's description. The description includes vendor-specific manufacturer information like the model name and number, serial number, manufacturer name, URLs to vendor-specific Web sites, etc. The description also includes a list of any embedded devices or services, as well as URLs for control, eventing, and presentation. The description is written by a vendor, and is usually based on a device template produced by a UPnP forum working committee. The template is derived from a template language that is used to define elements to describe the device and any services supported by the device. The template language is written using an XML-based syntax that organizes and structures the elements.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 2004Date of Patent: October 21, 2008Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: William M. Zintel, Amar S. Gandhi, Ye Gu, Shyamalan Pather, Jeffrey C. Schlimmer, Christopher M. Rude, Daniel R. Weisman, Donald R. Ryan, Paul J. Leach, Ting Cai, Holly N. Knight, Peter S. Ford
