  • Patent number: 4590898
Abstract: A hydraulic lash adjusting tappet 10 for use in engine valve gear of the direct acting type having one end of the tappet contacting the end of the combustion chamber valve stem 26 and the other end contacting the cam-shaft lobe 16. The tappet has the body 40 formed with a tubular wall portion 42 having an inwardly extending web portion 44 intermediate the ends thereof with a tubular hub 46 disposed therewithin formed integrally with the web and extending axially therefrom. A cam face disc member 18 is attached about the periphery thereof to one end of the tubular wall. A plunger means 50 is slidably received in the tubular hub and includes a piston 64 slidable therein forming a high pressure chamber 86 within the plunger remote from the cam face and having therein one-way valve means for admitting fluid to the chamber for lash adjustment. An annular retainer 56 is received over the outward end of the hub and a passage 84 is provided through the tubular wall portion for communicating fluid to the reservoir.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: May 27, 1986
    Assignee: Eaton Corporation

  • Patent number: 4221199
Abstract: A means for selecting one of a plurality of predetermined amounts of the lost-motion lash in the valve gear of an engine while the engine is running. A latchable mechanism in the valve gear is movable from a first position providing predetermined normal low level lash to a second position providing a predetermined substantially greater lash for reducing the effective lift of the cam and shortening of the valve event. A unique cam profile provides a period of linear lift of substantially constant low velocity, both during lash take-up on valve opening to prevent high velocity clash of valve gear components and during valve closing to prevent high velocity seating of the valve.

  • Patent number: 4213442
Abstract: A device for selectively disabling and enabling, while running, the combustion chamber valves of an internal combustion engine. The device is interposed in engine valve gear of the type employing a plurality of rockers mounted on a common shaft and acted upon by the cyclic application and relaxation of valve gear driving forces. Each of the rockers is pivotally mounted on the shaft by fulcrum means movable transversely with respect to the shaft for changing the rocker pivot point. The fulcrum means is mounted by latchable means movable, when the valve driving forces are relaxed, between a first and second position to permit changing of the rocker pivot for effecting disablement and enablement of the valve gear for selected valves. Actuator means selectively apply and hold a force on the latchable means and movement thereof occurs during the valve gear event upon relaxation of the driving forces.

  • Patent number: 4018101
Abstract: A positioning device for a vehicle steering column which includes a stationary support structure formed from a pair of spaced plates, a moveable member adapted for attachment to the column and slidably received between the plates for translational and pivotal movement with respect to them, a fixed guide pin and a floating guide pin engaged in cooperating slots in the moveable member to control translational and pivotal movement, latching elements operable to fix the moving member in any pivotal or translational position, and a control lever operative to disable the latching elements to allow movement and further operative to apply a transverse locking force to the plates when the moveable member is in any selected position.
