  • Patent number: 9197559
Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatuses can provide for adaptive streaming using non-local information. Non-local information identifying usage statistics associated with a network service group can be collected and used to derive session parameters associated with each of a plurality of sessions within the network service group. The non-local information can also be updated and the updated non-local information can be used to dynamically adjust the session parameters.

  • Patent number: 9113211
Abstract: Various methods, systems, and apparatuses can be used to consolidate unicast video streams into multicast video streams. In some implementations, a skewing window associated with multiple unicast video streams for a video can be identified using a maximum skewing rate and a program duration, and a multicast stream for the video can be generated based on the skewing window. The unicast video streams can then be skewed and merged with the multicast stream.

  • Patent number: 8743454
Abstract: An optical amplifier includes at least one pump source and an optical fiber cable which includes an amplifying optical fiber and a pump optical fiber that are defined by respective lengths. The amplifying optical fiber and the pump optical fiber are coated with a common coating along a portion of their respective lengths, and the fibers are in optical contact with each other along a coating length within the common coating. The common coating has a refractive index which is lower than a refractive index of a cladding material of the pump optical fiber. The fibers are made substantially from glass. The amplifying optical fiber includes a core and a cladding, and is doped with a rare earth dopant. The pump optical fiber is defined by a first end and a second end, the first end of the pump optical fiber being connected to the pump source.

  • Patent number: 8733429
Abstract: A hybrid heating and/or cooling system may combine different energy sources (e.g., solar and geothermal) into a single system. The hybrid heating and/or cooling system may include one or more heat pumps, a heat exchanger system, a solar and/or waste energy system, and a delivery system for delivering heat (and/or cool air) to a space such as a building. These systems may be interconnected and controlled using various conduits, pumps, valves and controls. The solar energy system may provide heat (e.g., low grade heat) to the working fluid at the input to the source side of the heat pump and/or may provide heat (e.g., high grade heat) to the delivery system for direct solar and/or waste energy heating.

  • Patent number: 8391309
Abstract: A name that means something to a human can be used to provision multiple channels, multiple times after a one-time association of an binary integer mask bit pattern with the name, or mnemonic. Typically, the one performing the one-time association of the mask pattern with the mnemonic will choose a name that reflects the channel attributes represented by the mask pattern. Thus, rather than remembering a bit pattern for a single attribute, or even the more difficult task of remembering the pattern for multiple attributes, and having to make sure a ‘1’ is placed in a correct bit position among many ‘0’s when entering bit patterns, the one provisioning only enters a mnemonic that textually refers to the attribute, or attributes, to be provisioned for a given channel.

  • Patent number: 8376252
Abstract: Apparatus and method are disclosed for producing nanometer-range particle dispersions utilizing an immersion mill having a rotor for processing feedstock within a bed of media contained within a containment wall. An auxiliary chamber provides a chamber wall surrounding the containment wall and feedstock is passed from the bed of media, through the containment wall and into the auxiliary chamber while the media is contained within the bed of media. The feedstock is drawn from the bed of media, through the containment wall, and out of the auxiliary chamber, with an external pumping mechanism arranged for operation independent ofrotation of the rotor, whereby the containment wall is maintained unbroken by any direct connection between the rotor and the external pumping mechanism and remains effective in containing the media within the bed of media.

  • Patent number: 8275757
Abstract: A method is described for monitoring a plurality of process instances, such as business process instance. The method comprises: providing a model object reflecting a workflow common to the process instances, the model comprising a plurality of nodes with at least some of the nodes being capable of assuming at least active and blocked states; receiving events and changing the states of the nodes in corresponding model object instances in accordance with the events received so as to reflect the status of the process instances, repeatedly determining an “at risk” state indicator for the model instances, the “at risk” state indicator when set for a model instance indicating that the corresponding workflow instance is in a state in which it cannot progress to a normal completion without encountering a node in the blocked state.

  • Publication number: 20120201129
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for control admission to network resources are provided. Probationary service flows with a reduced priority are provisionally allowed to use network resources. As the network demonstrates its continued stability by the addition of the new probationary flows, each probationary flow can be re-assigned its original priority thereby promoting the probationary flow to a non-probationary status.

  • Publication number: 20100327033
Abstract: A roof rack system for a vehicle which has a fixed cab and a canopy which includes a pair of rails extending along the length of the vehicle and the canopy, and a number of transverse rails for supporting articles. The rails are fixed to the cab of the vehicle by a conventional element, but brackets are provided on the canopy for receiving both the longitudinal and the transverse rails. The brackets are height adjustable to account for differences between the height of the cab and the canopy of the vehicle, or to accommodate the system on various makes of vehicles which may have differing dimensions. The rails include aluminum or a similar material and are substantially oval on the upper part and flat on the lower parts (closed to the vehicle) when viewed in section.
