Abstract: In one illustrative example, a method of monitoring for pages in a wireless communication network by a mobile communication device adapted to operate with a battery power source includes the steps of repeatedly monitoring a quick paging channel of the wireless network for quick pages and, if a quick page is received on the quick paging channel, subsequently monitoring a paging channel of the wireless network for an upcoming page; identifying whether an external power source is connected to the mobile device; and if the external power source is identified as being connected to the mobile device: causing an indication to terminate use of quick paging to be sent to the wireless network and, after sending the indication, repeatedly monitoring the paging channel of the wireless network for pages.

Abstract: Apparatus and an associated method for facilitating paging of an access terminal that operates in a radio communication system. A paging message is formed that includes a plurality of partial identities that identify access terminals that are to be paged. The partial identities are ordered, such as in ascending order. and additional bits are added to the paging message, associated with, and part of the partial identities, once ordered.

A paging message is formed that includes either partial identities of access terminals that are to be paged or paging indicators. Selection is made as to whether partial identities or paging indicators are to be used responsive to the number of partial identities that have common portions. If a large number of partial identities have common portions, the paging message is formed of partial identities. Otherwise, the paging message is formed of paging indicators.

Abstract: Apparatus and an associated method is provided for facilitating paging of an access terminal in a radio communication system. A page message with partial identities is generated that includes an access sequence ID. The access sequence ID is used by the access terminal when responding to a page. The access terminal sends an access probe using the access sequence ID included in the page. The page message includes a message structure with partial identities where the access sequence ID is conditionally included. If the access terminal is to use a regular pool of access sequence IDs, the access terminal is not sent an access sequence ID in the page.

The access terminal detects a first page message that does not include an access sequence identifier. The access terminal responds to the first page message without waiting for detection of a second page message that includes an access sequence ID. And, for each of the random numbers, a hash value is created by applying the random number to a hash function. The hash values identify bit locations of a paging message. When the paging message is formed, bit locations associated with the hash values are populated with bit values are populated with bit values that identify whether the access terminal is being paged. And, the access terminal checks the bit values at the bit locations associated with the hash values to determine whether the access terminal is being paged.

Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for controlling generation of a registration message by an access terminal to register the access terminal with an access network. A configuration message broadcast by an access network station indicates if the network station is inner-cell-enabled capable and includes a value of a selected threshold, such as a minimum value of a pilot signal strength. The access terminal detects the configuration message and delays sending a registration message until signals received by the access terminal are of characteristics at least as great as the selected threshold.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for unlocking a mobile station operating in a limited service state, the method having the steps of: storing one or more predetermined contacts on the mobile station, and allowing, while said mobile station is operating in the limited service state, the mobile station to communicate with the one or more predetermined contacts, whereby the one or more predetermined contacts allow a user to obtain unlocking information for the mobile station.

Abstract: Herein are disclosed an apparatus and method of explicit indication of call from emergency call centre. The method includes the steps of forming an emergency signal in relation to the mobile station terminated call; sending the emergency signal to the mobile station on behalf of the emergency call centre; and detecting the emergency signal at the mobile station. The apparatus includes emergency signal forming means for forming an emergency signal in relation to the mobile station terminated call; emergency signal sending means for sending said emergency signal to the mobile station on behalf of the emergency call centre; and emergency signal detecting means for detecting said emergency signal at the mobile station. A global emergency call information record is disclosed for use in cdma2000 type networks and the like. The apparatus and method may apply to other networks.

Abstract: A system and method for automatically determining whether or not original message text should be included in a reply electronic message is provided. In one broad aspect, the original message text is included in the reply electronic message as a function of the original message. In a first example, the original message text is included as a function of a domain name of an originating address. In a second example, the original message text is included as a function of maintained information used for determining if original message text should be included in reply electronic messages. In a third example, the original message text is included as a function of an indicative encoding inside the original electronic message. In a fourth example, the original message text is included as a function of maintained information used for detecting address aliases.

Abstract: A system and method of packet zone hysteresis for a mobile station is presented. A packet zone hysteresis reset timer is started whenever the mobile station sends or receives packet data and packet data exchange is determined to be incomplete. The packet zone hysteresis reset timer gives a time duration for which packet data exchange must be completed if packet zone hysteresis information is to be maintained. If the packet zone hysteresis reset timer expires before packet data exchange is completed, then the packet zone hysteresis information is cleared. If the mobile station moves to a different packet zone while packet data exchange is determined to be incomplete or packet data is going to be sent to which a response is expected, then the mobile station will perform a packet data reconnect. According to another aspect, upon detecting that a packet data exchange has completed, the mobile station re-activates packet zone hysteresis if it was de-activated from the packet data exchange.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for providing consistency in Short Message Service (SMS) timestamp formatting (UTC or non-UTC) for mobile communication devices are disclosed. In one illustrative example, a method involves receiving an SMS message intended for a mobile communication device; identifying whether the SMS message has timestamp data formatted in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) format or non-UTC format; converting the timestamp data from the UTC format to a non-UTC time format based on an identification that the SMS message has timestamp data formatted in the UTC format; failing to convert the timestamp data to a non-UTC time format based on an identification that the SMS message has timestamp data in the non-UTC format; and causing the SMS message to be sent to the mobile communication device.

Abstract: A system and method of packet zone hysteresis for a mobile station is presented. When a short data burst is to be sent on the control channel, a check is made to see if packet zone hysteresis might have caused the PCF-PSDN interface to be torn down, and if necessary, this interface is re-established by performing a packet data service reconnect to thereby enable transmission of the short data burst.

Abstract: Methods, mobile stations and networks are provided that cause a packet data service reconnect to be performed automatically after the occurrence of an event triggering registration, even in some circumstances where such a data service reconnect would not normally occur. This avoids complications that can arise due to the packet data service being discontinued upon registration and the resulting inability to reach the mobile station.

Abstract: A method of network-directed service status order at a mobile station, includes the steps of: (a) from the mobile station sending an origination message, over the network, requesting a service with the network; (b) in response to the origination message, at the mobile station receiving over the network a status message of a status of the requested service, the status message identifying one of a grant of the requested service and a denial of the requested service; and (c) operating the mobile station in an unambiguous state in accordance with the received status message.

Abstract: A method of timer-based registration prevents timer-based registrations that are not needed from being sent. A history is maintained of time instances of implicit registrations transmitted by a mobile station over a communications network. If an elapsed time between a pair of successive ones of the time instances in the history is not less than a registration period with the network, a timer-based registration of the mobile station with the communications network is initiated after the expiry of a random time value less than the registration period. Otherwise, a timer-based registration is initiated after the expiry of a time period equal to the registration period.

Abstract: A method and system for improved buffering during a flow control event, the system comprising: a mobile station having a mobile timer; a radio network communicating wirelessly with the mobile station and including: a base station; and a packet control function (PCF) capable of interrupting the flow of data to the wireless device during the flow control event; a packet data serving node (PDSN) communicating with the PCF and having a buffer to store data received for the mobile station during the flow control event, the buffer having a buffer timer; and a push function communicating with the PDSN and having a retry timer to indicate when to resend an unacknowledged packet; wherein the system coordinates the buffer timer with either the mobile timer or the retry timer to eliminate redundant messages.
