The 2-cyanobenzimidazoles which are unsubstituted in the 1-position are equally new and can be reacted from suitable phenylenediamines of the formula (IV) with methyl 2,2,2-trichloroacetimidate of the formula (V) to give the 2-trichloromethylbenzimidazoles of the formula (VI), which are equally new and from which the compounds of the formula (II) can subsequently be obtained with ammonia.
