  • Patent number: 6304639
Abstract: A general dimensioning method and system for allocating limited transmission resources to various virtual paths defined on top of a physical network. A two-level hierarchical structure is defined with a layer of one or more virtual paths on top of a layer of physical network elements. Traffic demand is specified for each virtual path and the Entropy Rate Function is used as a blocking measure. The loads on the various links are balanced by equalizing blocking probabilities and the optimal allocation of network physical resources is determined.

  • Patent number: 6104699
Abstract: A method and device partition physical transmission resources of a physical network. At first, a set of logical networks is established on top of the physical network. The logical networks comprise nodes and logical links extending between the nodes so as to form the logical networks. The logical links are used by routes. Next, the capacities of the logical links of the logical networks are determined such that the route blocking probability on each individual route in each one of the logical networks is less than or equal to a maximum allowed blocking probability for each individual route. This is realized by distributing, for each individual route, the route blocking evenly among the logical links used by the individual route. Finally, the physical transmission resources are allocated among the logical links of the logical networks according to the determination.

  • Patent number: 6069894
Abstract: A set of logical networks is established on top of a physical network Next, a predefined objective function, closely related to the operation and performance of the physical network, which physical network is viewed as the set of logical networks, is optimized with respect to at least one set of decision variables. Finally, the decision variables in accordance with the optimization are used to control the operation of the overall network system. Physical transmission resources are partitioned among logical networks. Traffic loads are distributed among routes interconnecting the nodes of node pairs.

  • Patent number: 5764740
Abstract: A general dimensioning method and system for allocating limited transmission resources to virtual networks given offered traffic for virtual paths on the virtual networks. The N-layer virtual network dimensioning problem is reduced to an equivalent virtual path dimensioning problem by collapsing the top three layers of a N-level hierarchical structure to a two-layer hierarchical structure consisting of the old bottom layer and a new top layer. The new top layer comprises a plurality of virtual routes mapped on the old bottom layer. The resulting virtual route dimensioning problem can be solved using standard techniques or by using an entropy-based dimensioning algorithm to yield the optimal allocation of resources for layer N-2.

  • Patent number: 5729548
Abstract: A system and method for high-speed parallel switching of digital data sequences using an all-optical technique is described. Each input digital data sequence is encoded into an optical pattern comprising of several cells. The encoded optical pattern can be of various sizes and shapes depending on cost and quality considerations. A unique modulating pattern is selected for each digital data sequence based on the destination address of that data sequence. Every cell of each encoded optical pattern is modulated using the selected modulating pattern to obtain a modulated-encoded optical pattern. Each modulated-encoded optical pattern corresponds to a specific input data sequence. All of the modulated-encoded optical patterns are superposed to obtain a composite modulated-encoded optical pattern. The composite pattern is optically broadcast to all possible outputs of the parallel switch.

  • Patent number: 5727051
Abstract: A general dimensioning method and system for allocating limited transmission resources to virtual paths and virtual networks on a physical network given offered traffic on each virtual path or virtual link. A hierarchical structure is defined with a layer of one or more virtual paths on top of a layer of physical network elements, and optionally, an intermediate layer of virtual networks. The virtual path dimensioning problem is solved using the Entropy Rate Function as a blocking measure. The loads on the various links are balanced by equalizing blocking probabilities and the optimal allocation of physical resources is determined.
