A signal to disengage or to otherwise adjust the clutch is generated when the monitored position(s) of and/or the magnitude(s) of force(s) acting upon one or more mobile components indicate that the operator of the motor vehicle intends to shift the transmission into or from a selected gear ratio.

One of the sensors can monitor one or more parameters of a gear ratio selecting device for the change-speed transmission in the power train, and another sensor can monitor one or more parameters of an adjusting device which shifts the transmission into a selected gear. The control unit processes the incoming signals to ascertain the selected gear of the transmission and/or the driver's intent to shift the transmission into a particular gear, and operates the actuator for the clutch accordingly.
