  • Patent number: 4092453
Abstract: A lightweight structural part is formed of band-shaped fiber strands woven into a lattice-type structure. Each fiber strand is made up of a number of carbon fiber rovings impregnated with a synthetic resin. The rovings in each strand are arranged in at least two layers with a plurality of rovings in each layer. The fiber strands are disposed in spaced relation in the lattice-type structure and are woven in a repetitive pattern. In forming a structural part or a support, the lattice-type structure can be cut into sectors or other shapes with the shapes being joined together, if necessary, to provide the desired finished configuration.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONThe present invention is directed to a lightweight structural part formed of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic which is constructed from carbon fiber rovings wound on a mandrel and subsequently processed by pressing.Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics are used for structural parts which must have a high rigidity and a very low specific weight.

  • Patent number: 4050827
Abstract: A structural member capable of transmitting both tensile and compressive forces is made up of a first component and a second component each capable of transmitting the load which the structural member is designed to carry. The first component is formed of a structural metal while the second component consists of fiber-reinforced synthetic plastic material fibers wound on the first component in the elongated direction of the structural member. If the first component fails, then the second component made up of the longitudinally wound fibers can take over the transmission of the designed load.

  • Patent number: 4048360
Abstract: A low-weight, dent-resistant hollow structure composed of spaced apart ou sheets and an inner supporting core, the inner supporting core being formed from a plurality of rigid fibrous nets impregnated with a hardened resin, some of said nets being parallel to and contiguous with the outer sheets and other of said nets being disposed perpendicularly to and secured to the parallel nets so as to maintain the outer sheets in a spaced apart position. Such structures are particularly useful in devices for aviation and space travel. Methods for forming the structure are disclosed herein.

  • Patent number: 4038885
Abstract: An arrangement for the reduction of stress in a connecting element having part of fiber-reinforced plastic. The fiber-reinforced plastic part is subject to being stressed by longitudinal and/or bending forces. A bush is retained by an appropriate retaining element. Disposed around the bush is a fiber-reinforced plastic part forming an end loop. An inner loop is formed within the outer loop with the outer curved boundary of the inner loop bearing on the bush. In a first embodiment, the inner loop is disposed completely within inner side walls of side portions of the end loop. In second and third embodiments, the inner loop penetrates the side portions of the end loop in a laminar or braided arrangement.

  • Patent number: 4025675
Abstract: The disclosed reinforced laminate or composite board comprises external first and second continuous spaced sheets of fiber-reinforced synthetic resin, with the reinforcing fibers in each sheet oriented so as to provide reinforcement in two directions of stress. A supporting core is sandwiched between the first and second sheets. This supporting core is formed by a plurality of rib elements extending in directions different from the directions in which the reinforcing fibers of the first and second sheets are oriented. The rib elements are composed of superimposed roving bundles which are impregnated with synthetic resin. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the reinforcing fibers of the external sheets are arranged in two superimposed fiber layers, the fibers of one of the layers extending perpendicularly to the fibers of the other layer, thereby to provide reinforcement in two main directions of stress. The rib elements in this embodiment extend diagonally to the fibers of the external sheets.
