Abstract: A standoff device for assisting in maintaining a handheld portable communications device a predetermined distance away from a user's head. Some embodiments use an electronic or sonic range finder on the communications device to alarm when the device is held too close to the head. Sonic range-finder emissions are preferably at a frequency outside the range of human hearing. The electronic range finder may operate on any safe low power frequency, such as, for non-limiting example, visible light, infrared light, or radio frequency electromagnetic radiation. The standoff device may be attached to or built into the housing of the communications device or may be attached to or built into a case or cover for the communications device.
