  • Patent number: 9288130
Abstract: A system that incorporates teachings of the subject disclosure may include an access segment of a mobility network in which network aggregation devices facilitate a transfer of network traffic data received from base transceiver stations, direct probe packets to a targeted base transceiver stations and determine reachability, by way of an expected reply to each probe packet. A change from reachability to unreachability of the targeted base transceiver station or the network aggregation device is determined to be an indication of service impacted outage. Other embodiments are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 9131396
Abstract: A system that incorporates teachings of the subject disclosure may include an access segment of a mobility network in which routers receive network traffic data from base transceiver stations, forward the network traffic data by way of aggregation routers, originate probe packets directed to a targeted one of the base transceiver station and the aggregation router to determine, by way of an expected reply to each probe packet, reachability of the targeted one of the base transceiver station or the aggregation router. A change from reachability to unreachability of the targeted one of the base transceiver station or the aggregation router is determined to be an indication of service impacted outage. Determined service impacted outages are logged. Reliability metrics, such as average uptime, are computed from reachability status to quantify the impact of service level outages perceptible by the mobile communication devices. Other embodiments are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7975187
Abstract: A method and system for measuring a customer impacting failure rate in a communication network are disclosed. For example, the method collects a plurality of customer impacting network failure events, where the plurality of customer impacting network failure events comprises both hardware failure events and software failure events associated with a particular type of router or switch, or a particular type of component of the router or the switch. The method computes a Mean Time Between Outage (MTBO) metric from the plurality of customer impacting network failure events and compares the MTBO metric with a MTBO goal metric, wherein the MTBO goal metric is calculated in accordance with a predicted Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) metric.

  • Patent number: 6751664
Abstract: Monitoring of customer bandwidth demand is accomplished by comparing mean access router uplink utilization to a prescribed threshold value that is computed based upon granular measurements of uplink utilization. This provides an indication of whether customer demand is met with a statistical level of confidence. Further, the actually measured access router uplink utilization can be used to make a predictive assessment of whether to provision a new customer on the access router without adversely affecting existing customers.

  • Patent number: 6704289
Abstract: Unavailable customer bandwidth in a connectionless IP network (100) is determined by first measuring network accessibility and network continuity (in Defects Per Million) via an accessibility measurement instrumentation device (202) and a continuity measurement instrumentation device (204). The accessibility and continuity measurements are combined via a mechanism (206) to yield a service unavailability measure that is then compared to a threshold value, representing the applicable customer unavailable bandwidth specified under an service level agreement specification (210). If the actual service unavailability exceeds the allowable unavailable customer bandwidth under the service level agreement, then an event correlation device (212) will correlate the service unavailability measure with network fault and performance alarm information from network alarms (216) to establish a root cause.

  • Patent number: 6266322
Abstract: A method for dimensioning link bandwidth for elastic-data traffic for a link in a communications network, in which a number of connections N having elastic-data traffic flowing over a bottlenecked link in a communications network is determined. A transfer rate ?f for each connection is determined for the condition that the communications network is not a constraining resource for the connection. A per-connection bandwidth objective b is determined for elastic-data traffic flowing over the link. Lastly, a link bandwidth B for the link is dimensioned for the elastic-data traffic flowing over the link based on either a mean performance criterion or a tail performance criterion using the determined number of connections N, the determined transfer rate for each connection and the determined per-connection bandwidth objective b.
