  • Patent number: 6496316
Abstract: A magnetic recording and reproduction apparatus, includes a circuit for changing a reference amplitude value of a Viterbi detector. The circuit is used to record and reproduce data with the reference amplitude value displaced from a reference value, thereby measuring the data error rate. Displacement of the reference amplitude from a reference value increases the data error rate, and therefore the data error rate can be measured within a short time. A data error rate with the reference amplitude equal to a reference value is estimated from the data error rate measurement, thereby making it possible to evaluate the degree of accuracy of a magnetic recording and reproduction apparatus. The data error rate is measured with the reference amplitude of the Viterbi detector displaced from a reference value while changing the equalization coefficient value of a waveform equalizer, the cut-off frequency of a low-pass filter and the write precompensation amount of a write precompensation circuit.

  • Patent number: 5766718
Abstract: It is disclosed that a longitudinal magnetic recording medium and apparatus has recording sections having longitudinal magnetic films magnetically isolated in a recording direction. The magnetically isolated recording sections can record a single bit each so that the longitudinal magnetic recording medium can remove the irregular domain boundary of its own caused on boundaries of magnetization reversals in the recording direction. This can improve the signal-to-media noise ratio to a great extent in writing and reading.

  • Patent number: 5659309
Abstract: A data recording/reproducing apparatus and method therefor having a Viterbi decoder which stores operation result values of an inputted reproduced signal and the reference value when the peak value of the reproduced signal is updated, compares this value with the reproduced signal in amplitude, updates the stored value when the result satisfies the predetermined condition, detects a change in the polarity of the comparison result, controls the clock counter depending on the status of the peak value updating signal, sets 1 in the shift register at the position indicated by the counter according to the detected polarity inversion signal when the peak value is updated, and accordingly makes the updating and detecting operations independent of operations of addition and subtraction of the current reproduced signal and reference value and operations of addition and subtraction of amplitude comparison.

  • Patent number: 5418660
Abstract: A nonlinear compensation A/D converting method and a circuit for compensating asymmetry of a reproduction signal waveform, so as not to deteriorate the performance of a discriminator even if there is a nonlinearity such that the amplitudes of the signal differ in dependence on the polarities of the waveforms like a reproduction waveform of an MR head are provided. Scales 1+ and 1- of an A/D converter are set to values which differ in dependence on the positive and negative polarities of the input signal, so that a nonlinear compensation which is suitable for a high accurate and high speed operation can be realized. Even an MR head in which the asymmetry between the upper and lower waveforms of the reproduction waveform is large can be used. A yield of the head can be improved.

  • Patent number: 5287228
Abstract: The time interval/amplitude level difference between sequential peaks in waveforms of first reproducing signals from a recording medium is detected and stored in a storage. The time interval/amplitude level difference between peaks in a waveform of a second reproducing signal from the recording medium is detected and compared with the time interval/amplitude level difference stored in the storage to thereby perform peak detection in the waveforms thereof. An original bit train of the first reproducing signal corresponding to a maximum-likelihood waveform selected among the waveforms of the first reproducing signals is given as a standardized signal. Data are provided to represent the time interval/amplitude level difference between the sequential peaks in the waveforms of the reproducing signals in a range of electromagnetic signal interference on the recording medium.
