  • Patent number: 7299915
Abstract: The present technique, in accordance with one exemplary embodiment, relates to a motorized pulley. The exemplary motorized pulley includes a rim or housing inside of which are disposed an electric motor and a gear assembly, which is configured to transfer torque of the electric motor to the housing. Thus, during operation of the motor, the exemplary pulley rotates the housing in relation to a support structure to which the motorized pulley is mounted. To improve the dissipation of heat generated during operation of the motor, the motor is thermally coupled to the frame. Additionally, the rotor shaft of the exemplary motorized pulley extends into the external environment surrounding the pulley, thereby facilitating the operation of a machine element located externally with respect to the pulley via the electric motor disposed within the pulley.

  • Patent number: 6147619
Abstract: An instrumented dead shaft is provided for a rotating machine system, such as a drum pulley. The shaft includes bearing support regions for receiving bearings for supporting a rotating element. The shaft also includes at least one sensor assembly, and preferably a number of sensor assemblies for sensing operating parameter of the shaft system. In a preferred configuration, the system includes a rotational speed sensor, temperature sensors, load sensors, and an accelerometer. The speed sensor detects rotational speed of the rotating element and applies an output signal representative thereof to an interface circuit. The temperature sensors provide an indication of the bearing temperatures. The load sensors provide an indication of the strain of the shaft during loading. Output signals from all sensors are transmitted to a control and monitoring circuit via network interfaces. The data links between network interface circuitrys and the sensors are embedded in the shaft.

  • Patent number: 6116089
Abstract: A system for detecting defects in a rotating machine system includes a sensor such as an accelerometer coupled to the machine system for detecting vibrations of a rotating element. Output of the accelerometer is transmitted, preferably via a network data link to a monitoring/control circuit. The monitoring/control circuit analyzes the vibration data to develop a normal vibration profile for the machine system during a normal operating phase. The normal vibration profile is stored in a memory circuit for later reference. During subsequent operation of the machine system, the monitoring/control circuit cyclically analyzes vibration data to develop actual vibration profiles. The actual vibration profiles are compared to the normal vibration profile and, where variations between the profiles exceed preset tolerances, the circuit provides an indication of a malfunction or defect in the machine system.

  • Patent number: 5909170
Abstract: An improved speed reducer assembly is provided. The assembly comprises an input shaft, an output shaft and a gear train interfacing the input shaft and the output shaft to effect a desired angular velocity ratio between the input shaft and the output shaft. A housing defines an interior area in which the gear train is disposed, the housing being configured to hold lubricant within the interior area. A pressure sensing device is mounted on the housing in communication with the interior area. The pressure sensing device is configured to output a pressure signal responsively to fluid pressure within the interior area. A second housing may be provided to sealingly enclose a portion of the pressure sensing device outside the speed reducer housing.

  • Patent number: 5289388
Abstract: In a die casting machine that includes a shot cylinder having a ram for injecting metal into a die cavity, an electrohydraulic system for controlling operation of the shot cylinder includes an actuator coupled to the shot cylinder ram. A valve supplies hydraulic fluid to the actuator cylinder as a function of valve control signals. Microprocessor-based digital control electronics includes memory for storing a desired ram velocity profile as an incremental function of ram position. The control circuitry is responsive to signals from a sensor coupled to the actuator, indicative of position at the ram, for retrieving corresponding velocity signals from memory and supplying control signals to the valve as a function of such profile velocity signals.

  • Patent number: 4811561
Abstract: An electrohydraulic system includes a plurality of electrohydraulic devices individually controlled by microprocessor-based control electronics. The device controllers are connected in common by a bidirectional serial data bus to a master controller for coordinating operation of the various devices. Internal programming within the master controller establishes a repetitive time-sequence of windows for communications with the various device controllers for downloading control signals and parameters, and for uploading data indicative of system status and operation. The various device controllers include internal programming for operating the associated hydraulic devices as a function of control signals and parameters received from the master controller. Pseudo-devices are also connected to the bus for time-division multiplexed communication with the master controller and for performing overall system coordination and analysis.

  • Patent number: 4774651
Abstract: A power servo system which includes an actuator coupled to a load and receives an input command signal indicative of desired motion at the load. A sampled-data control system receives and samples input signals indicative of desired and actual motion at the hydraulic actuator and load, and provides control signals to the actuator necessary to obtain desired motion. The sampled-data control system includes digital processing circuitry with series and feedback compensation, coordinated with the hydraulic system transfer function, to form a complete closed-loop control system operating in the sampled-data or Z-transform domain. Different equation constants in the series and feedback compensation circuitry are recalculated periodically. Such constants are recalculated as a function of system behavior, so that system control automatically varies with operating conditions.

  • Patent number: 4502109
Abstract: An electro-hydraulic servo control system which includes a servo actuator adapted to variably position a load mass, and an actuator control system which includes a sensor coupled to the actuator for providing an indication of measured actuator position and a digital observer responsive to measured actuator position for estimating velocity and acceleration at the actuator. Signals indicative of measured actuator position, estimated velocity and estimated acceleration are fed to a comparator, together with a position command signal, for obtaining a difference or error signal to provide a control input to the actuator. The observer electronics includes digital computation means suitably programmed to estimate position, velocity and acceleration as solutions to three linear equations with three unknowns. Equation constants, which are functions of actuator and driven mass physical characteristics, are entered through operator-adjustable resistors.
