  • Publication number: 20150369812
Abstract: Flavonoid compounds that are selective for a protein, a portion or a living cell, or a portion of an organism may be used as biological imaging agents. The flavonoid compounds are useful for methods of imaging organisms such as zebrafish embryos and zebra fish. Flavonoid compounds may also be used to detect protein. Advantageously, flavonoids that selectively bind protein, a portion of a living cell, or a portion of an organism may exhibit a florescence “turn-on” mechanism, where the flavonoids that are selectively bound exhibit a florescence response when excited.

  • Patent number: 9090602
Abstract: 2,5-Bis(benzoxazol-2?-yl)benzene-1,4-diol derivatives (Zinhbo derivatives) are used to detect zinc ions and have particular application in vivo and in vitro. Zinhbo derivatives upon excitation give a florescence response emission that can be used to determine the presence of zinc cation in solution. Zinhbo derivatives complexed with zinc cations upon excitation can produce a florescence response emission in the visible and near infrared range. Zinhbo derivatives complexed with zinc cations exhibit a large stoke shift between the excitation and emission wavelengths.

  • Publication number: 20140311551
Abstract: A solar energy system includes a solar energy receiver and a matrix of pipes containing a working fluid attached to the bottom side of the receiver. The matrix is a plurality of vertically-tilted pipes and at least three horizontal pipes arranged in a specific order and have a defined function. The working fluid absorbs heat and changes from a liquid to a gas. The system further includes a thermal storage tank, which includes a heat storage medium and a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger receives evaporated working fluid from one of the horizontal pipes, condenses the working fluid vapor by transferring heat to the heat storage medium. When water is the working fluid, a distilled water storage tank may be connected to the heat exchanger to receive distilled water. When recirculation of the working fluid is desired, condensed liquid from the heat exchanger is flowed to a horizontal pipe.

  • Publication number: 20140007429
Abstract: A method of making a flat plate solar energy system includes steps of: providing a first metal sheet and a second metal sheet; stamping the first metal sheet to create channels; and fabricating a solar panel by joining the first metal sheet to the second metal sheet such that the channels form passageways between the two sheets. The passageways contain the flow of a working fluid that absorbs and transports heat by phase change. The method further includes steps of creating ports to allow the working fluid to enter and exit the solar panel; and providing a heat exchanger piped to the ports of the solar panel. Optional steps include attaching photovoltaic cells to the solar panel; extracting electricity from the photovoltaic cells; and providing a water storage tank.

  • Patent number: 8420925
Abstract: A solar energy collector produces electricity and heat using an optically transparent vessel containing one or more photovoltaic cells and a liquid that substantially fills the vessel. The vessel has a top with a flat exterior surface and a bottom with a concave exterior surface that is coated on the outside with a reflective material. Solar radiation traveling through the top of the vessel into the liquid and through the bottom strikes the reflective material on the outside of the vessel and is reflected back through the bottom, into the liquid and to a focal line adjacent to the interior surface of the top. Cooled liquid is fed into the vessel through an entry port and heated liquid is removed through an exit port. One or more photovoltaic solar cells are located adjacent to the interior surface of the top aligned with the focal line.
