    Abstract: An image forming apparatus includes an image forming unit to form an image on a sheet, a conveyance roller, a motor, a gear train, a detection unit to detect motor driving current, a phase determination unit to determine a motor rotor rotation phase, and a control unit having first and second control modes. The control unit rotates the rotor to rotate the conveyance roller in a predetermined direction, and rotates the conveyance roller in a direction opposite to the predetermined direction. The control unit controls the driving current in the second control mode, and then switches, in response to a value corresponding to a rotor rotation speed having reached a target speed, from the second control mode to the first control mode to control the driving current. The target speed is a speed which corresponds to a speed when the conveyance roller conveys the sheet and is a constant value.

    Abstract: When field strengthening is constantly performed during driving by a drive motor to inhibit a rotating speed of the drive motor from suddenly fluctuating, power consumption is increased. The field strengthening is performed only during a period during which the field strengthening is required to be performed. Thus, it is possible to reduce a period during which a current value is set to a d-axis current command value (the field strengthening is performed) while the motor is driven. This can prevent increased power consumption.

A calibration unit calibrates an adjustment amount for adjusting color registration based on a detected position of patterns formed onto the transfer belt. A registration adjusting unit adjusts image forming positions of the plurality of image forming units based on the set adjustment amount. During formation of the patterns and during detection of the formed patterns a control unit controls not to adjust the position of the transfer belt in the belt width direction according to the detected position of the transfer belt.

A color registration adjustment unit has a first mode in which color registration adjustment is performed based on the amount of the color misregistration, and a second mode in which the amount of the color misregistration is predicted based on temperature using the table and the color registration adjustment is performed based on the predicted amount. An updating unit makes the image forming units form the color registration patterns when the temperature reaches a predetermined temperature, and updates the table based on the amount of the color misregistration.
