  • Patent number: 5734231
Abstract: A fluorescent lamp lighting circuit is disclosed in which an instant lighting is possible, and a high reliability is ensured. Further, the circuit is compact, and the cost is low. The fluorescent lamp lighting circuit according to the present invention includes a discharge circuit section including a choke coil serially connected to a filament of a fluorescent lamp. It further includes a lighting circuit section connected serially to the filament and the choke coil so as to be turned on at certain intervals by supplying the power, and so as to be turned off after the starting of the glow discharge of the fluorescent lamp. It further includes a protecting circuit section for turning off the light circuit section after certain repetition of on/off operations of the lighting circuit section.

  • Patent number: 5617507
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and system for synthesizing speech utilizing a periodic waveform decomposition and relocation coding scheme. According to the scheme, signals of voiced sound interval among original speech are decomposed into wavelets, each of which corresponds to a speech waveform for one period made by each glottal pulse. These wavelets are respectively coded and stored. The wavelets nearest to the positions where the wavelets are to be located are selected from stored wavelets and decoded. The decoded wavelets are superposed to each other such that original sound quality can be maintained and duration and pitch frequency of speech segment can be controlled arbitrarily.

  • Patent number: 5492885
Abstract: Mercury-thallium based superconductors with the formula Hg.sub.1-x Tl.sub.x Ba.sub.2 (Ca.sub.1-y Sr.sub.y).sub.2 Cu.sub.3 O.sub.8+.delta. ; change "their preparing method, in particular characterized in that it" to and a method for preparing them. The new superconductors are prepared by reacting respective ternary oxides, such as Ba.sub.2 CuO.sub.3+x and Ca.sub.1-y Sr.sub.y CuO.sub.2, to reduce the formation of an impure phase and by substituting thallium (Ti) a portion of the mercury (Hg) conventionally used in mercury-based superconductors of similar structure, in order to thermally stabilize the superconductor and provide it with a high critical current density characteristic.

  • Patent number: 5231076
Abstract: A process for preparing 123 superconductor material comprising heating a 123 compact in direct physical contact with a 211 compact to decompose only the 123 compact to form a liquid phase in the 123 compact is disclosed. The heat is maintained with the liquid phase passing into the 211 compact, to form a decomposed compact and an enriched compact. The decomposed and enriched compacts are cooled to below 1000 degrees celsius to promote a peritectic reaction between the 211 grains and the infiltrated liquid phase in the 211 compact. The decomposed and enriched compacts are then further cooled to about 400-600 degrees celsius in an oxygen atmosphere, and finally cooled to room temperature to yield a fused 123 decomposed compact-123 enriched compact. The 123 superconductor having enhanced electrical and mechanical properties is the 123 enriched compact which can be separated from the decomposed compact, by severing the 123 decomposed compact from the 123 enriched compact.

  • Patent number: 4822147
Abstract: A nonlinear, saturable absorptive medium is employed in conjunction with optical bistable devices to filter background light, serve as a frequency filter and/or amplify transmitted light while retaining the spatial intensity profile of an optical image.

  • Patent number: 4776677
Abstract: A nonlinear optical medium wherein the optical index of refraction is a function of the intensity of light irradiating the medium, is employed in various devices to affect at least a portion of an incoming light beam by refracting or reflecting that portion of the light and thereby reduce the amount of light falling on an object. The nonlinear optical medium is employed in a resonator optical bistable device, in a self-bending approach and in a self-defocusing approach to provide the protective function. The spatial profile of light intensity of the incoming light can be shaped prior to the incoming light irradiating the nonlinear medium or the nonlinear medium itself can be shaped to provide the path altering function. A laser hardened device with ultra fast switching time, a large dynamic range and passive operation is a preferred application of the present invention.
