  • Patent number: 7225353
Abstract: A system and method for information preservation on a portable electronic device. A signal indicating an energy capacity threshold remaining in the battery of a hand held device may be generated. Then, responsive to such a signal, information may be copied from a volatile memory into a non-volatile memory. The non-volatile memory may be configured to provide instructions for direct execution by a processor, or the non-volatile storage may be attached via an expansion interface. The non-volatile memory may be a removable card. The copy function is typically done in low power modes. Alternatively, the information is only copied provided sufficient battery capacity remains to perform the copy function.

  • Patent number: 7154746
Abstract: A cover for an opening in the housing of a portable electronic device that provides a function in addition to that of protecting the opening from dirt. The cover can be coupled to the housing so that it can move between a closed position within the housing's surface recess and an open position that allows access to the opening in the housing. In the closed position, the cover becomes part of the housing and the of the device is generally unchanged. The cover can function as an antenna for wireless communication between the device and a network or access point, and it can contain circuitry for devices such as transmitter/receivers. The cover can also function as a display device, a speaker, or an alarm. Thus an existing cover that occupies space within the volume of a handheld device can be utilized for expanding the functionality of the device while generally retaining the current form factor of the device.

  • Patent number: 7133859
Abstract: A method and system providing category based sort and display instructions for a computer system having a database of information stored therein are described. A database of contact information is maintained in the computer with each record containing information related to a personal contact. Each record can be assigned a custom category type defining the kind of contact that the record is. The user is allowed to display a condensed listing of the contacts associated with each category. When the list is displayed, the list can be sorted by a field specific to that category type. Each category type can have its own sorting instructions. The sorting instructions also define the way in which the lists are displayed. The user can define and edit the category based instructions at any time.

  • Patent number: 7068256
Abstract: A portable computer system contained within a housing that comprises an electronic muscle material for performing a plurality of functions. The electronic muscle can sense when the portable computer is being handled. When handled, the electronic muscle material can cause the portable computer system to enter a power-on mode and, conversely, when no longer being handled it can cause the portable computer system to exit the power-on mode. When handled, the electronic muscle material can further detect the left- or right-handedness of the user and, based on the handedness, can generate function buttons or other alterations to accommodate the user's hand preference and finger placement. The placement of the user's hand in a location on the electronic muscle material which indicates preparation to write can activate a selectable graffiti display area on the touch screen.
