  • Publication number: 20190301625
Abstract: A combination control and check valve assembly for a wet piping system includes a control valve in the form of a ball valve and a one-way check valve mounted within the flow pathway of the ball valve. A valve actuation assembly is mounted to the valve assembly to selectively rotate the ball valve between the open and closed positions thereof. The valve actuation assembly is mounted to a first side of the valve assembly and rotationally fixed to the ball, whereby rotation of the valve actuation assembly rotates the ball between the open and closed positions. A side opening is formed in a second side of the valve assembly that is angularly spaced from the first side. The side opening is positioned to align with the fluid flow pathway of the ball valve in the closed position thereof to provide access to the check valve.

  • Publication number: 20190240519
Abstract: A fire-protection system for delivering a fire-control fluid includes a valve having a body with an inlet, an outlet, and a fluid passageway connecting the inlet with the outlet. A seal member is supportable across the passageway to close the passageway. The seal member is supported across the passageway in a sealing position in a pre-activation condition of the valve. The seal member is movable from the sealing position to a fluid-flow position in an activated condition of the valve. The seal member includes a support body having a longitudinal axis, a seat, a leading surface facing in an upstream direction from the seat, and a trailing surface located in a downstream direction from the seat and contoured radially inwardly in the downstream direction. A Belleville washer is mounted on the seat of the support body.

  • Publication number: 20190162318
Abstract: A diaphragm-type control valve having a diaphragm and a valve body is provided preferably for use in the separation of and fluid control between a fluid source and a pressurized gas volume. The diaphragm element and a port in the body together form an intermediate chamber that eliminates the need for a check-valve downstream of the valve. In one preferred embodiment, an inner surface of the valve body defines a chamber having an inlet and an outlet in communication with the chamber, and an elongated seat member defining a groove in communication with the port. A diaphragm member having upper and lower surfaces is disposed within the chamber. The lower surface preferably includes a pair of spaced apart elongated members defining a channel therebetween. The diaphragm member engages the seat member placing the channel in communication with the groove to define an air seat in communication with the port.

  • Patent number: 10195473
Abstract: A dry sprinkler for a fire protection system. The preferred dry sprinkler has a metallic disc annulus positionable within a passageway to skew a central axis of a face of the metallic disc annulus with respect to a longitudinal axis of the dry sprinkler so that an expected minimum flow rate based on a rated discharge coefficient is provided. The dry sprinkler operates to provide an expected flow rate over a range of start pressures. The expected flow rate is based on a K-factor rating. The dry sprinkler provides an acceptable level of fluid flow rate from the expected flow rate based on the K-factor for a range of start pressures.

  • Publication number: 20190030385
Abstract: An activator for a pilot type firefighting system for accelerating firefighting system activation is disclosed. The system comprises a control valve which acts to control firefighting fluid flow to a distribution system, and configured such that release of pressure to a control chamber would activate the control valve. The activator comprises a first chamber in fluid coupling to the pilot fluid and a second chamber in fluid coupling to the pilot line via a flow restrictor. A pressure sensing member is disposed such that pressure difference between the chambers would cause an activation of a switch. The release of the switch directly or indirectly causes activation of an electrical valve which vents the pressure in the control chamber. Several aspects of the invention include various firefighting arrangements, various optional features of the activator, firefighting system, and several methods of operation of a system utilizing the activator.

The sprinkler frame includes a support member having an annular member spaced from the outlet to limit or control the axial translation of the deflector assembly relative to the outlet. Moreover, the annular member includes a region to support a closure assembly and thermally responsive trigger assembly under a fluid static load. A cover plate assembly includes a flexible annular wall to allow the cover plate assembly to be pushed on and held about the annular member of the sprinkler frame.

  • Publication number: 20180361182
Abstract: A thermal trigger assembly for remote mechanical actuation of another fire protection system component includes an activation component with a distal base, a distal movable member, a proximal base, a proximal movable member, and a bias member biasing the proximal movable member from a preactivation position to an activated position located proximally of the preactivation position. A thermally responsive element is retained by the distal base, loses structural integrity under occurrence of a predetermined thermodynamic condition, and thereby allows the distal movable member to move from a preactivation position to an activated position with respect to the distal base. A flexible connector connects the proximal movable member to the distal movable member. Upon the loss of structural integrity by the thermally responsive element, a biasing force from the bias member causes a movement of the proximal movable member from the preactivation position to the activated position.

  • Publication number: 20180333599
Abstract: An automatic fire protection sprinkler assembly and a method of sealing includes a sprinkler frame having an inlet, an outlet, an internal passageway extending between the inlet and the outlet, and a sealing surface formed about the outlet. The assembly also includes a thermally responsive trigger and a seal assembly disposed between the sealing surface and the thermally responsive trigger. The seal assembly includes a body having an inner surface defining an internal chamber. The inner surface has a portion disposed relative to the sealing surface such that a fluid disposed in the internal chamber and acting on the portion of the inner surface provides a sealing force in the direction of the sealing surface.

  • Publication number: 20180099302
Abstract: An adjustable drop nipple has an upper pipe with an inlet end adapted for connection to a branch pipe, and an outlet end. A lower pipe is telescopically and sealingly engaged with the upper pipe and has an inlet and an outlet including a connection for a sprinkler head. Upper and lower supports are respectively fixed to the upper and lower pipes. A vertical support member is positioned generally parallel to the longitudinal axes of the upper and lower pipes and is secured to the upper and lower supports by upper and lower fasteners, respectively. The upper fastener permits the vertical support member to travel axially upwardly upon an application of a primarily upward axial force, but prevents the vertical support member from traveling axially downwardly upon the application of a primarily downward axial force.

  • Patent number: 9901763
Abstract: A thermal trigger assembly for remote mechanical actuation of another fire protection system component includes an activation component having a base and a movable member. A bias member biases the movable member from a preactivation to an activated position with respect to the base. A thermally responsive element retains the movable member in the preactivation position until a predetermined thermodynamic condition is reached, when the thermally responsive element loses structural integrity. A flexible connector includes a flexible hollow outer cable housing with one end configured to be stationarily (preferably fixedly) connected with the base. A flexible cable is inside the outer cable housing for sliding movement therein and has one end configured to be stationarily (preferably fixedly) connected with the movable member. The flexible cable is moved with respect to the outer cable housing by movement of the movable member upon loss of structural integrity by the thermally responsive element.
