Patent number: 7079358Abstract: A disk drive has an actuator supported for turning, and supporting magnetic heads for reading and writing data from and to a recording disk and a voice coil for driving the actuator. Plates are disposed near the voice coil so as to cover part of the voice coil. A hard disk drive capable of detachably combining with a PC card is formed by assembling separate component parts including a functional unit including a disk, a base plate holding the functional unit, a frame bumper disposed in a middle part of the assembly and serving as a shock-absorbing member, a card assembly provided with a connector to be connected to the slot of a PC card, and a top cover covering the functional unit held on the base plate. The frame bumper receives lateral shocks that act on the side surfaces of the hard disk drive.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 2003Date of Patent: July 18, 2006Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Yoshihiro Hirasaka, Mutsuo Ohta

Patent number: 6690540Abstract: A disk drive damper avoids matching a frequency band of a sound frequency peak generated by the rotation of a spindle motor and a resonant frequency of the damper. The damper is attached to a disk drive apparatus and enabled to repress vibration. The damper includes a flat base portion and wall-thickness portions that are thicker than the flat base portion. The damper is varied in shape more freely than conventional flat dampers. Consequently, the resonant frequency of the damper can be adjusted more freely than ever.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 2001Date of Patent: February 10, 2004Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Yoshihiro Hirasaka, Kohji Serizawa, Shinichi Matsuzaki, Kohji Takahashi

Patent number: 6633452Abstract: A hard disk drive apparatus is capable of reducing a noise effectively during operation and capable of enhancing the reliability of the drive. The hard disk drive has first and second ribs that are formed near a pivot for an actuator so that a tilt of the pivot is prevented when the actuator is operated. Also, vibration absorbing members are interposed between the first and second ribs on the side of a base and a cover so that the vibration absorbing members are brought into contact with the cover. These vibration absorbing members are located in an intermediate portion between fixing places for fixing the cover to the base and a fixing place for fixing the cover to the pivot.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 2001Date of Patent: October 14, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Yoshihiro Hirasaka, Keishi Takahasi, Kohji Serizawa, Mutsuro Ohta

Patent number: 6519111Abstract: A disk drive apparatus is constructed with a filter attached to an enclosure through a through hole formed in the enclosure. A special positioning operation is eliminated by inserting the filter into the through hole because a portion of the filter is exposed to the outside through the enclosure. The disk drive apparatus can be constructed so that the filter is supported on the enclosure. In this case, the enclosure has a chamfered portion around the circumference of the through hole; the filter has a flange corresponding to the chamfered portion; and the flange is brought into contact with the chamfered portion. The filter can be fixed to the enclosure by sticking adhesive tape on a circumference of the flange and a circumference of the chamfered portion of the enclosure. Adhesive residue is eliminated because the fixation of the filter is performed with single-coated tape.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 2001Date of Patent: February 11, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Yoshihiro Hirasaka, Ichiroh Koyanagi, Kohichi Takeuchi

The damper is attached to a disk drive apparatus and enabled to repress vibration. The damper includes a flat base portion having a jointing surface onto the disk drive apparatus and wall-thickness portions that are thicker than the flat base portion. Patent number: 5425013Abstract: A relative position error signal is calibrated in an optical storage device in which a tracking error signal (TES) varies as the light beam shifts its position through the objective lens. The calibration is performed by moving the coarse carriage to a predetermined region of the optical disk and measuring the TES. The fine actuator is adjusted until the tracking error signal equals a predetermined value. Then, the relative position error signal is read and an adjustment to the RPE gain is calculated to bring the gain to a predetermined value. The adjusted gain is used during normal disk access operations.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1993Date of Patent: June 13, 1995Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Alan A.
