  • Patent number: 7079358
Abstract: A disk drive has an actuator supported for turning, and supporting magnetic heads for reading and writing data from and to a recording disk and a voice coil for driving the actuator. Plates are disposed near the voice coil so as to cover part of the voice coil. A hard disk drive capable of detachably combining with a PC card is formed by assembling separate component parts including a functional unit including a disk, a base plate holding the functional unit, a frame bumper disposed in a middle part of the assembly and serving as a shock-absorbing member, a card assembly provided with a connector to be connected to the slot of a PC card, and a top cover covering the functional unit held on the base plate. The frame bumper receives lateral shocks that act on the side surfaces of the hard disk drive.

  • Patent number: 6952323
Abstract: A disk drive unit has a spindle motor for rotating a disk, a magnetic head for processing data, a actuator for seeking the magnetic head with respect to the disk, a voice coil motor for moving the actuator, and a base with an opening and a top cover that seals the opening. A damper is disposed between the voice coil motor and the top cover. The voice coil motor comprises first and second yokes, which are placed opposite each other at a predetermined gap, and a permanent magnet disposed between the first and second yokes. The first and second yokes respectively have an inner perimeter edge facing the pivot axis, an outer perimeter edge facing the base, and a pair of side perimeter edges combining the outer and inner perimeter edges. The damper includes first dampers with a predetermined width along the pair of side perimeter edges.

  • Patent number: 6690540
Abstract: A disk drive damper avoids matching a frequency band of a sound frequency peak generated by the rotation of a spindle motor and a resonant frequency of the damper. The damper is attached to a disk drive apparatus and enabled to repress vibration. The damper includes a flat base portion and wall-thickness portions that are thicker than the flat base portion. The damper is varied in shape more freely than conventional flat dampers. Consequently, the resonant frequency of the damper can be adjusted more freely than ever.

  • Patent number: 6657812
Abstract: A hard disk drive contains a disk assembly and a cylindrical disk container. The drive also includes a base around which a peripheral wall extends, a catching chamber including a partition wall partitioning the base into the catching chamber and a disk container, and a top cover functioning as a lid of the base. In addition, the hard disk drive has a first gasket as a first gasket section existing between the top cover and a peripheral wall of the base, and a second gasket as a second gasket section existing between the top cover and the partition wall of the catching chamber.

  • Patent number: 6633452
Abstract: A hard disk drive apparatus is capable of reducing a noise effectively during operation and capable of enhancing the reliability of the drive. The hard disk drive has first and second ribs that are formed near a pivot for an actuator so that a tilt of the pivot is prevented when the actuator is operated. Also, vibration absorbing members are interposed between the first and second ribs on the side of a base and a cover so that the vibration absorbing members are brought into contact with the cover. These vibration absorbing members are located in an intermediate portion between fixing places for fixing the cover to the base and a fixing place for fixing the cover to the pivot.

  • Patent number: 6519111
Abstract: A disk drive apparatus is constructed with a filter attached to an enclosure through a through hole formed in the enclosure. A special positioning operation is eliminated by inserting the filter into the through hole because a portion of the filter is exposed to the outside through the enclosure. The disk drive apparatus can be constructed so that the filter is supported on the enclosure. In this case, the enclosure has a chamfered portion around the circumference of the through hole; the filter has a flange corresponding to the chamfered portion; and the flange is brought into contact with the chamfered portion. The filter can be fixed to the enclosure by sticking adhesive tape on a circumference of the flange and a circumference of the chamfered portion of the enclosure. Adhesive residue is eliminated because the fixation of the filter is performed with single-coated tape.

  • Patent number: 5425013
Abstract: A relative position error signal is calibrated in an optical storage device in which a tracking error signal (TES) varies as the light beam shifts its position through the objective lens. The calibration is performed by moving the coarse carriage to a predetermined region of the optical disk and measuring the TES. The fine actuator is adjusted until the tracking error signal equals a predetermined value. Then, the relative position error signal is read and an adjustment to the RPE gain is calculated to bring the gain to a predetermined value. The adjusted gain is used during normal disk access operations.
