  • Patent number: 5099816
Abstract: An engine control system of a multiple cylinder engine shifts operation between operation with all the cylinders operated and operation with a portion of the cylinders rested under a predetermined condition. When the operation with all the cylinders operated is shifted to operation with the number of the operating cylinders reduced, a control value for controlling the cylinder, such as an amount of fuel to be supplied or an ignition timing, is corrected in a direction of increasing output of the engine, the cylinder being in process of combustion immediately prior to a shift from the operation with all the cylinders operated to the operation with the number of the operating cylinders being reduced.

  • Patent number: 5069084
Abstract: A control system for an automatic transmission in an automotive vehicle selects an appropriate shift pattern in compliance with the temperature of hydraulic oil contained in a torque converter of the automatic transmission. The control system includes a transmission control unit having a plurality of shift patterns including a first shaft pattern favored for a cold engine and a second shift pattern favored for an engine after warm-up, an oil sensor for detecting the temperature of hydraulic oil contained in or supplied to the torque converter, a timer for counting the time period after engine starting, and a CPU for selecting either the first or second shift pattern. The first shaft pattern is selected when the temperature of hydraulic oil is less than a preset value, whereas the second shift pattern is selected when the time set by the timer is up.

  • Patent number: 4938197
Abstract: A fuel supply control system for an engine associated with a transmission for transmitting the engine output power to driving wheels of a vehicle increases the amount of fuel to be supplied to the engine when the engine is in a particular operating condition in which relatively large engine output power is required. The fuel supply control system receives a signal from a switch which is switched over according to whether the engine is associated with a manual transmission or an automatic transmission, and controls the amount by which the fuel to be supplied to the engine is increased when the engine is in the particular operating condition so that the amount is smaller when the engine is associated with an automatic transmission than when the engine is associated with a manual transmission.

  • Patent number: 4683455
Abstract: A shifting timing indicating system for a vehicle includes a control circuit having an engine rpm sensor for detecting the engine rpm and a rpm comparator which receives the output of the engine rpm sensor and determines whether the engine rpm exceeds a preset value. The control circuit outputs a shift-up signal when the engine rpm exceeds the preset value. A shift-up indicator receives the shift-up signal from the control circuit and makes a shift-up display to direct the operator of the vehicle to shift up. An acceleration detecting circuit detects the rate of increase in engine load and the shift-up indicator is inhibited from making the shift-up display for a predetermined time interval which is extended with increase in the rate of increase in engine load.

  • Patent number: 4606318
Abstract: A Karman vortex generator is disposed in the air intake passage of an internal combustion engine. The frequency of the Karman vortex generated by the generator is detected by a Karman vortex frequency detector to measure the flow rate of intake air. The frequency of the Karman vortex is in proportion to the flow rate of intake air with a Strouhal number being the constant of proportionality thereof. However, when the flow rate or the flow velocity of intake air is within a certain range, the Strouhal number fluctuates and the proportionality between the Strouhal number and the flow rate of intake air is broken. This range is shifted when the kinematic viscosity of intake air changes. The kinematic viscosity of intake air depends upon the temperature thereof.

  • Patent number: 4603552
Abstract: In a turbocharged engine, a pressure sensor is disposed downstream of the blower of the turbocharger and protective devices such as an alarm lamp for requiring the operator to lower the supercharging pressure and means for interrupting fuel feed to the engine are actuated under the control of a control circuit, when the supercharging pressure detected by the pressure sensor exceeds a preset maximum supercharging pressure. The control circuit does not permit the protective devices to operate unless the detected supercharging pressure continues higher than the preset maximum supercharging pressure for a predetermined time interval.

  • Patent number: 4559913
Abstract: A reliability ensuring system for an internal combustion engine comprises an operating state detecting means for detecting the value of an engine parameter to be controlled which could affect the reliability of the engine and should be controlled when it goes outside a normal region. A preset value generating means generates a plurality of preset values with respect to the value of the engine parameter to be controlled, the preset values corresponding to different degrees of deviation of the engine parameter to be controlled from the normal region. An output signal generating means generates an output when the detected value of the engine parameter to be controlled exceeds one of the preset values for a predetermined time interval. The predetermined time interval is determined for each preset value so that it increases as the degree of deviation of the factor to be controlled from the normal region is reduced.
