Abstract: Method and device for therapeutic or aesthetic treatment of the skin performs a combination of dermabrasion to mechanically modify at least an outer layer of the skin in a first region and phototherapy. The device preferably employs a skin interface element with projections protruding from a substrate which is moved in a vibratory motion by a vibration generating mechanism. This is combined with an illumination system deployed to direct a therapeutically relevant dosage of light towards a surface of the skin against which the skin interface unit is in contact.

Abstract: The present invention relates to methods for intradermally delivering one or more biologically active agents such as vaccines and therapeutic agents into the dermis layer of the skin of a subject to obtain systemic delivery or an immune response using a microneedle drug delivery device containing the agent to be delivered. The methods employ a microneedle device with a row of hollow microneedles. The microneedles penetrate the skin of the subject and assume an anchored state in which the microneedles are anchored in the skin and project laterally from the device. A pivotal motion is then performed with the device so that the skin in which the microneedles are engaged is lifted above the initial plane of the surface of the skin while the biologically active agent is delivered. The methods of the invention elicit increased humoral and/or cellular response as compared to conventional vaccine delivery routes, facilitating dose sparing.

Abstract: A microneedle device for delivery or sampling of fluids to or from intradermal layers of the skin of a mammalian subject includes a skin contact configuration defining an orientation of the device and a number of microneedles The microneedles are deployed relative to the skin contact configuration so that, when deployed against the skin, a first region of a peripheral surface of the microneedle is deployed roughly parallel to the initial plane of the skin. A fluid flow bore intersects the first region of the peripheral surface.
