Publication number: 20170223541Abstract: A method of controlling access to a telecommunications network is disclosed. One of a plurality of commercial UEs receives an SIB2 signal from the network. The SIB2 includes a threshold signal BF (0<BF<1) representative of network load at a given time, and a time signal BT. In response to the received SIB2, the commercial UE generates a random number RD1, between 0 and 1. The random number RD is compared with the threshold value BF and, where the value RD1 for the commercial UE is below the threshold BF, the commercial UE is denied access to the network. If the random number exceeds the threshold value BF, the commercial UE is permitted access to the network. Emergency Services UEs have priority access.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 27, 2015Publication date: August 3, 2017Inventor: Youssef CHAMI

Publication number: 20170195835Abstract: User location-based alerting in a cellular network may be provided. Geographical location information for one or more mobile terminals of the cellular network is received at a network entity of the cellular network from one or both of: a core network part of the cellular network; and a network management part of the cellular network. One or more geographical locations are identified and a message is then generated to cause an alert to be sent to any mobile terminals in the one or more geographical locations based on the received geographical location information.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 27, 2015Publication date: July 6, 2017Inventors: Youssef CHAMI, Sumera KHALANDAR

Publication number: 20170195833Abstract: User location determining in a cellular network may be provided. Geographical location information for one or more mobile terminals of the cellular network is received at a network entity of the cellular network from one or both of: a core network part of the cellular network; and a network management part of the cellular network. A message for communication from the net-work entity to another entity is then generated based on the received geographical location information. For instance, this may allow one or mobile terminal locations to be tracked and their locations may be reported.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 27, 2015Publication date: July 6, 2017Applicant: VODAFONE IP LICENSING LIMITEDInventors: Youssef CHAMI, Sumera KHALANDAR

Patent number: 9072061Abstract: A mobile telecommunications network, such as a GSM, UMTS or LTE network, may include, in addition to the conventional radio access network comprising the base stations, one or more additional access points. An access point may be connected to the network core by an IP transport broadband connection. The access point may be configured to appear to the mobile terminal as a conventional base station. Arrangements are disclosed which allow the access point to dynamically adjust the power output through its Common Pilot Channel relative to one or more users. In other words, the greater the distance a user is from the access point, the greater the output power.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2008Date of Patent: June 30, 2015Assignee: VODAFONE GROUP PLCInventors: Toby Proctor, Youssef Chami

Patent number: 9014618Abstract: A cellular telecommunications network base station repeater for a mobile terminal in a network having a power control function causes, during an active communication session, mobile terminal uplink transmit power to decrease in response to an increase in signal strength of the received uplink signal. The gain of the repeater is increased in response to an increase in the uplink signal received at the repeater above a threshold, and subsequently decreasing the gain until the measured power in the received uplink signal exceeds the threshold. Due to the power control function, increasing the gain causes the transmit power of the mobile terminal, and hence the uplink signal received at the repeater, to decrease. Decreasing the gain causes the transmit power, and hence the received uplink signal, to increase. The threshold not being exceeded is indicative of the communication no longer being active, and the repeater will eventually deactivate.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2007Date of Patent: April 21, 2015Assignee: Vodafone Group PLCInventors: Youssef Chami, Allan Bartlett

Patent number: 8805377Abstract: A GSM or UMTS mobile telecommunications network is disclosed. In addition to the conventional radio access network comprising macro base station, one or more additional access points are provided. The access point is connected to the network core by an IP transport broadband connection. The access point is configured to appear to the mobile terminal as a conventional base station—that is, it communicates with the mobile terminal using GSM or UMTS transport protocols and does not require any modification to a standard GSM or UMTS mobile terminal. A subscriber may be provided with a designated “home” access point to provide coverage in their premises. Arrangements are described which will tend to reduce the likelihood that reselection to the macro base station while radio coverage is available from the home access point.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 2009Date of Patent: August 12, 2014Assignee: Vodafone Group PLCInventor: Youssef Chami
