  • Patent number: 6496707
Abstract: For use in a wireless network having geographically-distributed base stations that serve wireless terminals, a system for, and method of, improving an operation of the wireless network. In one embodiment, the system includes: (1) a signal quality determination circuit that determines a relative quality of signals communicated between one of the wireless terminals and a set of base stations within range of the one of the wireless terminals and (2) a base station selection circuit, coupled to the signal quality determination circuit, that selects a base station in the set to serve the one of the wireless terminals based on the relative quality of signals.

  • Patent number: 6366588
Abstract: A CDMA communication system is disclosed offering a near continuum of data rates up to a maximum rate. The disclosed CDMA communication system increases the data rate variability, without disturbing the orthogonality between users. An increased number of data rates is obtained by time multiplexing the data rates achievable with conventional CDMA systems to provide additional data rates for various multimedia applications. If a user is assigned a specific orthogonal code sequence, such as a Walsh sequence, which permits a maximum data rate, nR, with conventional systems, the user can obtain additional desired data rates up to the maximum rate nR, by time multiplexing the specific orthogonal code set. Desired bit rates are achievable for applications requiring bit rates that are not an integer multiple of the rates provided by conventional techniques. A fundamental rate of R or “fat pipe” rates of powers-of-two multiples of the fundamental rate can be achieved in a conventional manner.

  • Patent number: 5854611
Abstract: The present invention relates to an antenna system utilizing a power sharing network to facilitate linear operation of power amplifiers by equally distributing an electromagnetic communication signal to the plurality of power amplifiers provided in the antenna system of the present invention. The power sharing network configuration enables linear power amplifier sharing with an input signal. In particular, the present invention antenna system provides a circuit arrangement providing a greater number of linear power amplifiers relative to antenna elements provided.

  • Patent number: 4204093
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for use in a communcation system of providing efficient access by low traffic stations while keeping the buffering requirements for high traffic stations at a minimum. The method provides a TDMA architecture which includes a plurality of different frame rates which is dependent on the traffic requirements between station pairs. In operation, a sequence of a plurality of s switching frames are used to form a super frame and each communication burst of a switching frame is divided into a plurality of q subbursts representative of q transmission channels so that a maximum of (q.multidot.s) transmission channels are available for assignment in corresponding bursts during a super frame. When traffic demands require n.multidot.

  • Patent number: 4085368
Abstract: Apparatus for canceling interference suitable for use in conjunction with stationary phased array antennas or transducer arrays designed for satellite or other communication systems employing N-phase PSK (Phase Shift Keying) modulation is disclosed. The techniques used in the apparatus involves processing of signals received by a main array and an auxiliary array of a phased array antenna so that an error signal is derived which is fed back to circuitry which modifies at least one signal received by the auxiliary array. The modified signal or signals are summed with the signal received by the main array so that a sum wave is generated whose interference component is minimal. The feedback circuitry exponentiates or raises the sum wave to the N.sup.th power to eliminate modulation, since the N.sup.th power of an N-phase PSK signal is a narrowband carrier. Then a term proportional to the desired signal raised to the N.sup.

  • Patent number: 3965433
Abstract: Apparatus for accomplishing phase equalization between two signal components derived from a common source includes circuitry for generating the sum and the difference of the two signal components and for deriving an error signal from the envelopes of the sum and difference. The error signal is mixed in a first mixer with the envelope of the sum signal and mixed in a second mixer with an envelope of an original signal from which the two input signal components to be phase equalized are derived. The output of the first mixer is applied to a phase adjuster which adjusts the phase of one signal component to be phase equalized so that desired phase equality is maintained between the two signal components. The output of the second mixer controls the gain of an amplifier which amplifies the envelope of the original input signal. A particular application of the invention is in a LIND (linear amplification using nonlinear devices) amplifier such as disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,777,275 issued Dec. 4, 1973 to D. C. Cox.
