  • Patent number: 11624693
Abstract: A system includes a method and apparatus suitable for measuring planar drop sizes in a liquid spray. Measurement may involve illuminating the spray with multiple lasers and measuring the scattered intensities at several view angles using linear arrays. The system may use inverse calculation of the measured scattered intensity to estimate the local drop sizes across the entire plane in a spray. The system includes radiation detectors containing sensing elements, a lens systems, and analog to digital conversion board to convert scattered intensities to drop sizes. In addition, the system may include choppers including at least two unique filters. The filters may be selectively placed in a path between the spray and the sensing elements. By selectively placing a single array may measure both a scattered intensity and an extinction of laser light emitted from the spray.

  • Publication number: 20190283904
Abstract: A method of determining a maintenance status of an aircraft engine to be tested. The method includes measuring spectral radiation intensities at a plurality of wavelengths and at a plurality of viewing angles from an exhaust plume of an aircraft engine to be tested so as to provide a plurality of measured spectral radiation intensities. Then, converting the plurality of measured spectral radiation intensities to test planar maps of at least one of: temperature, carbon dioxide concentration, and soot volume fractions. Next, comparing each test planar map to a fiducial map so as to provide a normal distance between the test planar map and the fiducial map. Then, the normal distance is compared to at least one threshold so as to determine a maintenance status of the aircraft engine to be tested. The method reduces the cost and time needed for aircraft maintenance, while increasing safety.

  • Publication number: 20160089062
Abstract: A method and a mobile app are disclosed for obtaining hemoglobin count in the blood of a mammal using digital images of the conjunctiva of the eye of the mammal taken with a camera of a mobile device running the mobile app. The mobile app carries out a method including: obtaining a color image of the conjunctiva of the eye using the digital camera; computing an R/B ratio and a Y/I ratio of the color image; normalizing the R/B ratio and the Y/I ratio using color image normalization parameters obtained using a master camera so as to provide a R/B true ratio and a Y/I true ratio; and using the R/B true ratio and the Y/I true ratio as inputs to respective look-up tables created using the master camera so as to provide an accurate measure of blood hemoglobin count.

  • Publication number: 20100172471
Abstract: Apparatus for detecting variations in gas density within a volume surrounded by a closed metal wall opaque to optical light includes a source of x-rays positioned at a selected location outside the closed metal wall. A detector is positioned outside the closed metal wall at a location suitable to detect x-rays from the source passing entirely through a portion of the volume surrounded by the closed metal wall. The detector has a plurality of sensors arranged in at least one row to capture a dimensionally distributed view of detected x-rays. A processor coupled to an output of the detector analyzes the data which can be displayed in a suitable graphical or pictorial presentation. The closed metal wall can define a housing for a flame, spray or other gaseous distribution. The entirety of the apparatus, excluding the display, can be located with a radiation shield, made of lead or other suitable material to prevent any stray output of x-rays. A dopant can be added to enhance the interaction with the x-rays.

  • Patent number: 6355930
Abstract: An infrared spectrometer is adapted to capture spectral data at high frequency and includes an aperture defining slit and tuning fork chopper for periodically admitting infrared radiation. A lens and a plurality of mirrors direct the infrared radiation through pair of calcium fluoride prisms that split the infrared radiation into spectral components. The spectral components are directed by an additional mirror and lens to an array of lead selenide pixels that generate a set of data indicative of the spectral component intensities. Data collection circuitry coupled to the pixel array and coupled to the tuning fork chopper collects the set of data at a selectable rate at least once during each opening of the aperture. A serial output on the data collection circuitry provides a list of data values representative of the spectral intensity at each pixel which can be then stored in a mass storage device as well as immediately analyzed based on selected criteria.

  • Patent number: 6184989
Abstract: Laser sheet tomography is employed to determine flow field statistics in non-steady and steady flow at high repetition rates. The laser sheet tomography system is divided into two independent optical portions, the laser illuminator and the laser imager. As an absorption instrument, the laser illuminator can be shone directly into the laser imager, or if desired, the two portions can be positioned orthogonally to each other with the laser imager observing the scattered light. The observed light is correlated with known variations in laser intensity of the imager to generate transmittance data from which asymmetry ratios and probability density functions of local absorption coefficients can be computed at time repetition rates of 200 Hz and greater.
