  • Patent number: 6727970
Abstract: A display includes a front panel and a back panel with a light control material in between. One of the panels includes a rigid substrate, for example made of glass or rigid plastic. The other of the panels includes a flexible substrate, for example made of a flexible plastic film. The panel with the flexible substrate may be made by a roll-to-roll process, with various fabrication operations formed while the flexible substrate is still part of a web of material. The panel with the rigid substrate may be separately fabricated, then combined with the other panel on the web through a pick and place operation that accurately locates the front panel relative to the back panel. The display may be any of a variety of displays, such as liquid crystal displays (LCDs), and electroluminescent displays, such as polymer light emitting devices (PLEDs) and organic light emitting devices (OLEDs).

  • Publication number: 20030206256
Abstract: A display device includes a light control device, and a backlight having a panel with one or more light management features. The light control device may be a liquid crystal display (LCD), for example having a plurality of picture elements, such as pixels, selectively activatable to allow or black transmission of light through the LCD. The light management features may include one or more features such as a brightness enhancement film, a transflective film, and/or a polarizing film. The backlight has a light emitting structure that may include an electroluminescent structure, such a small molecule organic light emitting device (SMOLED) or a polymer light emitting device (PLED). The electroluminescent structure of the backlight provides good illumination of the light control device at low voltage and low power, and the inclusion of the one or more light management features in the backlight may result in reduction of size, cost, and/or weight of the display device.

  • Patent number: 6214935
Abstract: An improved hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesive (HMPSA) composition contains an elastomeric component, such as a blend of SIS and SB block copolymers, and a tackifying component comprising one or more intermediate softening point resins (ISPRs) having a ring and ball softening point of from 35 to 60° C. The improved adhesive compositions are characterized by reduced volatility, less bleed and staining tendencies, and improved overall adhesive performance. The invention also provides improved label constructions in which a release liner is coated with an HMPSA composition and laminated to a flexible facestock. Notably, even when low basis weight paper facestocks are used, the construction can be converted at high speeds.
