Using a register that can shift image data in a plurality of directions, the image processing apparatus processes pixel data columns in a sub-scanning direction included in the block image data in the following manner. The pixel data columns are processed in the sub-scanning direction and a direction opposite to the sub-scanning direction alternately for each of the pixel data columns, and the pixel data columns are also processed in the order in which the columns are aligned in a main scanning direction. This makes shorter the filtering processing time of the image processing apparatus that performs processing on a block-by-block basis.
