PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICE AUTOMATICALLY CONTROLLING BACK LIGHT UNIT THEREOF AND METHOD FOR THE SAME
Publication number: 20090207121Abstract: A method automatically controls a back light unit in a display of a portable electronic device. A back light unit in the display is turned on when an input keystroke is detected. When an idle time of the portable electronic device exceeds a threshold time, an image-fetching unit is activated to fetch image at front side thereof. The back light unit keeps lighting on when a user face feature is identified in the fetched image. The back light unit is turned off to save power when no user face feature is identified in the fetched image.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 19, 2008Publication date: August 20, 2009Inventors: Yung-Ho Shih, Ping-Hung Kuan -
Publication number: 20090199295Abstract: The present invention provides an image password authentication system of a portable electronic apparatus and a method for the same. An image with a plurality of image regions is stored in the portable electronic apparatus, and the image regions are selected on a touch panel to generate an authentication parameter. The authentication parameter comprises user-selected image regions, a sequence of user-selected image regions, an elapsed time of selection operation, and requested times of selection operation. The authentication parameter is stored in a database module and is used to verify a validation parameter which is generated when users select the plurality of image regions on the touch panel of the authentication system in operating the portable electronic apparatus. Hence, the image password authentication can be provided to replace the existing number-input or character-input password authentication scheme.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 29, 2008Publication date: August 6, 2009Inventors: Yung-Ho Shih, Kuan-Hung Shen

Patent number: 6405362Abstract: Automatically installing a software application and automatically removing and releasing resources used by the application is disclosed. In one embodiment of the invention, the computerized system includes an operating system for controlling and maintaining resources on a computer; and an event monitor. The event monitor invokes an autorun program in response to a signal from the operating system that a computer-readable medium has been inserted into the computer. The event monitor also invokes the autorun program upon receipt of a signal that the computer readable medium has been removed from the computer. The autorun program installs an application from the computer readable medium when the medium is inserted and releases resources acquired by the application when the medium is removed.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1998Date of Patent: June 11, 2002Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Yung-Ho Shih, Yongqi Yang

Patent number: 6400851Abstract: Rotating image data ninety degrees is disclosed. In one embodiment of the invention, the computerized system includes an operating system providing a graphics interface library, and a graphics interface buffer maintained by the graphics interface library. The graphics interface buffer contains image data comprising a first screen image. The system also includes a graphics device driver that implements a method to rotate an area within the image data by dividing the area into a plurality of square pixel regions, rotating each of the squares, and writing the squares to an image data buffer comprising a display buffer maintained by the graphics device driver.Type: GrantFiled: January 28, 1999Date of Patent: June 4, 2002Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventor: Yung-Ho Shih

Patent number: 6243701Abstract: A system and method for sorting accented character strings involves creating an expanded character string containing the characters in their base form (without accents) and corresponding ordinal values indicating whether the base characters are accented or unaccented. The ordinal values are assigned in a manner that differentiates accented from unaccented characters as well as one type of accented character from another. The expanded character strings are then sorted, first according to their base characters and then according to their ordinal values.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1998Date of Patent: June 5, 2001Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Yung-Ho Shih, Daniel Boone, Guy Barker, Kevin Timothy Shields

Patent number: 5751276Abstract: A method for calibrating a touch panel display includes generating contact coordinates (x.sub.i, y.sub.i,i=1, . . . , N) indicative of N touch points of contact on the touch panel display, where N>3. The touch points can be selected at random on the touch panel, and are not constrained to specific, predefined locations. The contact coordinates (x.sub.i, y.sub.i) are related into screen coordinates (x.sub.i, y.sub.i,) according to the following mapping transformation: ##EQU1## This mapping transformation accounts for all possible two-dimensional transformations including transposition, rotation, and shearing. After N sets of digitizer and screen coordinates are found, values for the parameters a.sub.1, b.sub.1, c.sub.1, a.sub.2, b.sub.2, and c.sub.2 are derived. Preferably, the parameters are determined using an optimizing algorithm, such as a least square fitting algorithm. The parameters a.sub.1, b.sub.1, c.sub.1, a.sub.2, b.sub.2, and c.sub.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1996Date of Patent: May 12, 1998Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventor: Yung-Ho Shih

Patent number: 5510811Abstract: An apparatus and method for navigating through an application program on a computer coupled to a computer-controlled display screen. The user can control the cursor position on the computer-controlled display using simple controls. The invention may use a hand-held controller with a four direction control button and a function select button. The computer accepts the direction input information and moves the cursor or focus according to one of three different navigation functions. The first two navigation functions are selected by the application program, and may change from one navigation to another in different portions of the program or under user control. With the first navigation function, the direction buttons on the controller shift the focus from one hot spot to another hot spot in the selected direction using predefined criteria. With the second navigation function, the focus is shifted from a present position on the computer-controlled display to the adjacent position in the selected direction.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 1992Date of Patent: April 23, 1996Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Chris E.
