    Abstract: A handheld device provides for measuring the concentration of dialdehyde in a dialdehyde solution. The device comprises (a) an optically transparent first container being under vacuum whereby to draw in a first predetermined quantity of the dialdehyde solution; (b) a first light source positioned to transmit light in the range of 420 nm to 620 nm through the optically transparent first container; (c) a first sensor positioned to receive the transmitted light, wherein the first sensor is configured to measure an optical absorbance of the transmitted light and configured to transmit an electronic signal proportional to the optical absorbance; and (d) a microprocessor in electronic communication with the first sensor, wherein the microprocessor is configured to indicate the concentration of the dialdehyde in the dialdehyde solution based on the electronic signal received from the first sensor.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein are ?-Hydroxy sulfonate aldehydes and synthesis methods therefor. Germicidal compositions including the ?-hydroxy sulfonate aldehydes, are also disclosed. In one aspect, a germicidal composition may include a diluent, and a germicidally effective amount of a water-soluble germicidal compound including an aldehyde group and an ?-hydroxy sulfonate group. The water-soluble compound may have a solubility of at least 5 (w/v) % in water. In a further aspect, the compound may include 1-hydroxy-3-oxo-2-phenyl-propane-1-sulfonic acid salt, (2-formyl-phenyl)-hydroxy-methane sulfonic acid salt, 1-hydroxy-2-(4-methanesulfonyl-2-nitro-phenyl)-3-oxo-propane-1-sulfonic acid salt, 2-bromo-1-hydroxy-3-oxo-propane-1-sulfonic acid salt, 2-chloro-1-hydroxy-3-oxo-propane-1-sulfonic acid salt, 2-(1-formyl-2-hydroxy-2-sulfo-ethyl)-isonicotinic acid salt, 2-benzooxazol-2-yl-1-hydroxy-3-oxo-propane-1-sulfonic acid salt, or 1-hydroxy-2-(4-methoxy-phenyl)-3-oxo-propane-1-sulfonic acid salt.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein are germicidal compositions, kits, methods for preparing the germicidal compositions, and methods of using the compositions for disinfection or sterilization. In one aspect, a solid composition may include a solid having water solubility greater than phthalaldehyde, and a germicide diluted in the solid. In another aspect, a kit for preparing a germicide solution may include a germicide, an enhancer for the germicide, and at least two compartments to contain the germicide and the enhancer. In yet another aspect, an apparatus may be used to prepare a germicidal solution. The apparatus may include a first port to receive a first composition including a germicidally effective compound, a second port to receive a second composition including an enhancer for the germicidally effective compound, a source of water, and germicidal solution preparation logic to control preparation of the germicidal solution from the first and the second compositions and the water.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein are germicidal compositions and methods of using the germicidal compositions for disinfection and sterilization. In one aspect, a germicidal composition includes a germicidal dialdehyde and an efficacy enhancing halide salt to enhance the efficacy of the dialdehyde. One such composition may include water, phthalaldehyde, and an alkali metal halide salt to enhance the efficacy of the phthalaldehyde. In another aspect, a germicidal composition may include a carbonated germicidal solution containing dissolved phthalaldehyde. A method of forming the carbonated solution may include introducing carbon dioxide into the composition.
