Publication number: 20060279126Abstract: An improved chair is disclosed. The chair includes: (i) a seat; (ii) a base portion connected to the bottom of the seat; (iv) an upwardly extending support frame connected to either the seat or the base; and (v) a backrest connected to the support frame by a number of fasteners. The fasteners include a resilient member located between the backrest and the support frame, such that the backrest is spaced apart from the support frame.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 10, 2005Publication date: December 14, 2006Inventor: Zooey Chu

Patent number: 6755467Abstract: A backrest for use with a chair includes a support structure. The support structure has a rigid outer rim and flexible inner back support section. The support section consist of a number of generally parallel slats (vertically extending members) which seperately support parallel longitudinal sections of the person's back. Each slat produces a force against the person's back responsive to the weight placed on the slat by the person's back. As the person shifts positions, each slat moves to dynamically provide an increased or decreased force against the person's back, depending on whether the person is applying an increased or decreased force against the slat.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2000Date of Patent: June 29, 2004Assignee: Global Total OfficeInventor: Zooey Chu

Patent number: 6688687Abstract: A backrest for supporting a person's back having a front surface and a rear surface has a flexible support section having a fixed end which is mounted to a support structure and a free end which is displaceable vertically with respect to the fixed end, the support section is configured to be compressed and displaced forwardly when the free end is moved towards the fixed end. In one embodiment, an adjustment member is drivingly connected to the free end; and, a detent member for selectively receiving the adjustment member in one of a plurality of positions, the support member biasing the adjustment member into retaining engagement with the detent member due to the compression of the flexible support member by the displacement of the free end towards the fixed end. In another embodiment, a cam mounted off-center on a shafted controls the compression of the support structure.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2001Date of Patent: February 10, 2004Assignee: Global Total OfficeInventor: Zooey Chu

Patent number: 6279998Abstract: A chair comprises a seat; a support for the seat; and, a plurality of biasing members mounted between the support and the seat, the biasing members, in combination, have a compressive strength sufficiently high to essentially resist static movement of a person while seated in the chair and sufficiently low to cushion dynamic loads applied to the seat when a person sits down quickly in the chair. Alternately the chair comprises a plurality of connecting members extending between the seat and the support, each connecting member having at least one first detent member to lockingly connecting the seat to the support.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 1998Date of Patent: August 28, 2001Assignee: Teknion Furniture Systems, Inc.Inventors: Zooey Chu, Harald Wurl, Hermann Bock

Patent number: 6260921Abstract: A chair back is provided with an adjustable lumbar support member. The vertical height of the lumbar support member and/or the amount of lumbar support which is provided by the chair back may be adjusted. The controls for adjusting the lumbar support member are positionable on the sides and the rear surface of the chair back.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1999Date of Patent: July 17, 2001Assignee: Teknion Furniture Systems, Inc.Inventors: Zooey Chu, Harald Wurl, Hermann Bock

Patent number: 6189972Abstract: A chair back comprises a rear surface, a front surface spaced from the rear surface and a side extending between the front and rear surfaces; a lumbar support member positioned between the front and rear surfaces and mounted for vertical movement with respect to the chair back and for forward movement with respect to the front surface; a first control member positioned on the rear surface of the chair back for adjusting the forward movement of the lumbar support member; and, a second control member positioned adjacent one of the sides of the chair back for adjusting the vertical height of the lumbar support member.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1998Date of Patent: February 20, 2001Assignee: Teknion Furniture Systems Inc.Inventors: Zooey Chu, Harald Wurl, Hermann Bock

Patent number: 6135556Abstract: A chair comprises a longitudinally extending seat; a support member for supporting the seat at an elevated height; a slide member fixedly mounted to one of the seat and the support member; a housing positioned between the seat and the support member and fixedly mounted to the other of the seat and the support member, the housing having a cavity for slidably receiving the slide member, the slide member mounted for longitudinal movement forward and rearward with respect to the housing; and, an adjustment member mounted in the housing and drivingly connected to the slide member, whereby movement of the adjustment member in a first direction causes the seat to move forwardly and movement of the adjustment member in the opposite direction causes the seat to move rearwardly.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1998Date of Patent: October 24, 2000Assignee: Teknion Furniture Systems Inc.Inventors: Zooey Chu, Harald Wurl, Hermann Bock
