  • Publication number: 20140003322
Abstract: Multicast/broadcast offload session (MBOS) anchor logic is provided to establish an offload session to an MBOS gateway to provide a multicast/broadcast stream to user equipment in response to the user equipment handing off from a first access point to a second access point. The MBOS anchor logic is to establish the offload session concurrently with providing the multicast/broadcast stream to the user equipment via the first access point. MBOS gateway logic is provided to terminate the offload session and forward content to the user equipment. User equipment including MBOS management logic is provided to trigger establishment of the offload session terminated by the MBOS gateway for providing a multicast/broadcast stream to the user equipment in response to the user equipment handing off from a first access point to a second access point. The trigger is provided concurrently with the user equipment receiving the multicast/broadcast stream via the first access point.

  • Patent number: 8538327
Abstract: User equipment of a communication system in one aspect obtains data indicative of the position of a satellite, and obtains data indicative of the position of the user equipment. The user equipment computes a delay measure based on the data indicative of the position of the satellite and the data indicative of the position of the user equipment, and adjusts the timing of a communication transmitted from the user equipment to the satellite based on the delay measure. In an illustrative embodiment, the user equipment receives data indicative of position and velocity of the satellite, and adjusts both timing and frequency of the communication based on the position and velocity data. The timing and frequency adjusted communication may then be transmitted to the satellite over a unicast uplink channel.

  • Patent number: 8537713
Abstract: A carrier signal acquisition technique is disclosed. An improved course carrier frequency offset algorithm is employed in conjunction with a conventional fine carrier frequency offset algorithm. The course carrier frequency offset algorithm estimates large offsets that are multiples of the carrier spacing that may occur at system startup. A spectral null is placed in the center of the transmit spectrum and is thereafter located in a received signal. The position of the spectral null provides an estimate of the local oscillator carrier offset. A frequency finite state machine (FSM) processes a number of metrics to ensure the reliability of the course carrier frequency offset and of transitions between acquisition and tracking modes. The frequency FSM will utilize the frequency offset (modin) generated by a MODSC algorithm provided one or more predefined thresholds are satisfied.

  • Publication number: 20130141519
Abstract: A telepresence device allows a remote meeting participant to establish a telepresence at a remote meeting location. The telepresence device provides a video image of the remote meeting participant on a video display screen at a meeting location To enhance the visual sensation that the remote person is present at the meeting location, the telepresence device may display the silhouette image of the remote meeting participant without the image of the background scene of the remote participant's location (e.g., office, home or home office). Further, the telepresence device may be equipped with a rear-facing camera that captures a video image of the background scene behind the telepresence device at the meeting location. The silhouette image of the remote meeting participant may be superimposed on the video image of the background scene at the meeting location, which is captured by the rear-facing camera.

  • Publication number: 20130042275
Abstract: A video session scheduling capability is disclosed. The video session scheduling capability enables scheduling of video transmissions by mobile devices of a cellular sector. In response to a request by a mobile device to transmit a video via a wireless uplink of the cellular sector, a scheduler determines scheduling of the video session. The scheduler receives information indicative of an amount of wireless uplink resources available for supporting uplink video sessions within the cellular sector, receives information associated with the request by the mobile device to establish a video session for transmission of video content from the mobile device via a wireless uplink in the cellular sector, and determines, using the information indicative of an amount of wireless uplink resources available within the cellular sector and the information associated with the video session request, scheduling of the video session via the wireless uplink in the cellular sector.

  • Patent number: 8300749
Abstract: An endpoint or other communication device of a communication system includes a clock recovery module. The communication device is operative as a slave device relative to another communication device that is operative as a master device. The clock recovery module comprises a clock recovery loop configured to control a slave clock frequency of the slave device so as to synchronize the slave clock frequency with a master clock frequency of the master device. The clock recovery loop utilizes a frequency error estimator implemented as a maximum-likelihood estimator with slope fitting based on a sequence of arrival timestamps, and a loop filter implemented as a series combination of an adaptive-bandwidth filter and a proportional-integral controller.

  • Publication number: 20120144438
Abstract: A method and apparatus for distributing content via a network to user terminals includes storing content in a store, the content having a probability value indicating the probability that the content will be required by the user terminals. The content is separated into segments, each segment being associated with a respective segment probability value derived at least from the probability value of the content. The segments are ranked using at least the respective segment probability values. During a time period when the network capacity is greater than at another time, the top J ranked segments, where J is related to the broadcasting bit rate and duration of the broadcast, are predictively broadcast to user terminals.

  • Patent number: 8155170
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for modulating a communication signal in a code division multiple access (CDMA) environment using orthogonal N by N Hadamard spread spectrum codes Orthogonal spreading codes are used that have lengths that are not a power-of 2 to provide additional channel variability for various multimedia applications and increase the flexibility of the number of channels/bandwidth relationship. The Hadamard codes are multiples of 4 (4n) and demonstrate a good cross-correlation property, making them very useful in the flexible design of code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. A transmitter encodes each of N data streams (N not being a power of 2), to be transmitted using a 4n codeword, Ni. The received signal is passed through a filter matched to the characteristics of the appropriate codeword, Ni, and PN spreading sequence.

  • Patent number: 7573807
Abstract: A terrestrial repeater is disclosed for use in a satellite transmission system that may also include a plurality of satellites. The terrestrial repeaters are implemented as OFDM transmitters to minimize the channel impairments caused by multi-path propagation. The OFDM terrestrial repeaters differentially encode the transmitted signal over frequency, as opposed to time, in order to avoid channel phase distortion. The OFDM receiver allocates two unmodulated sub-carriers as pilot bins and thereby provides two sub-carriers as a reference within each OFDM symbol. At the OFDM receiver, the two unmodulated pilot bins contain no phase information and provide a reference for the differential demodulation performed by the OFDM receiver. The OFDM transmitter operates in two modes, namely, a normal mode and a transmitter identifier information (TII) mode.

  • Patent number: 7499508
Abstract: An automatic gain control technique is disclosed for adjusting the gain of an IF amplifier in a communication system, such as an OFDM or DMT communication system. The gain of an RF amplifier is controlled by a known RF automatic gain control circuit that generates an RF gain value. The disclosed IF automatic gain control (AGC) circuit controls the gain of an IF amplifier in the receiver. The disclosed IF AGC monitors the RF gain value, as well as pre-FFT and post-FFT signal energy measurements performed before and after a fast Fourier transform (FFT) stage, respectively, to maintain a desired set point. The IF AGC adjusts the previous IF gain value by an amount opposite to the adjusted RF gain value, if any. If there is no RF gain adjustment, then the IF AGC will adjust the IF gain based on thresholds established for the pre-FFT and post-FFT measurements. If the pre-FFT measurement is within a desired tolerance of the pre-FFT threshold, then the IF gain will be lowered in stepped increments.
