    Abstract: The present invention provides an improved NMR sequence for detecting small amount of a substance having short NMR transversal relaxation in the presence of a large amount of a substance having long NMR relaxation. A sequence of pulses enables the original z-oriented magnetization vector of a substance to experience differing reorientation effects based on the relative transverse relaxation rate of the substance. After said pulse sequence, a substance with long transverse relaxation experiences a substantial inversion of its nuclear magnetization vector, while a substance with short transverse relaxation experiences a nearly zero value of its vector. After a determinable wait time, said vectors can be shown to experience recognizably different behavior under the application of a CPMG sequence of pulses. Appropriate wait time can be determined by zeroing out spin echoes during the CPMG pulse sequence.

    Abstract: An apparatus and a method for measurement of NMR relaxation parameters of earth formations uses a coil on a logging tool to substantially polarize nuclear spins within a volume of earth. The polarizing pulse then switched off adiabatically. The magnetization of the spins then precesses around earth's magnetic field at a Larmor frequency corresponding to the earth's field. A second coil on the logging tool is pulsed with a carrier signal having this frequency and modulated by a CPMG sequence to obtain spin echo signals. The spin echo signals may be received by the same coil or by a second coil. Alternatively, beam steering of two coils on the tool may be carried out to ensure a resultant field that has a significant component transverse to the earth's field for carrying out the spin echo measurements.

When used in well logging applications, the absence of a strong permanent magnet eliminates almost completely the amount of ferromagnetic debris picked up on the logging tool when passed through casing. The absence of debris results in the static magnetic field being substantially in conformance with design. The electromagnet is designed to give a static field of 0.6-6 mT (10-100 times the earth's magnetic field). Free induction decay or spin echo measurements may be made to give low resolution measurements of bulk properties of earth formations. The same coil configuration may be used to estimate body fat measurements of a human body. An alternate embodiment of the invention uses a capacitive discharge through an electromagnet with a time varying magnetic field with the receiver operating at a different frequency from the transmitter.

    Abstract: A method for analyzing a bone is disclosed, including measuring a nuclear magnetic resonance signal corresponding to an amount of hydrogen within a known volume of the bone. The volume is large enough that so the signal corresponds to bulk properties within the volume. A bone matrix volume is determined from the signal. In one embodiment, the signal is a steady state free precession amplitude. The selected known volume in one example is selected by a sensitive point technique which includes imparting a substantially homogeneous static magnetic field to the bone and superimposing thereon mutually orthogonal oscillating gradient magnetic fields. In another example, the signal amplitude can be used to directly calculate bone mineral density of the bone.

    Abstract: A method for analyzing a bone is disclosed. The method includes measuring nuclear magnetic resonance signals corresponding to an amount of hydrogen nuclei from within a selected portion of the bone. The signals measured includes components corresponding to bound water in the bone. Specific bone tissue volume is determined from an amplitude of the components corresponding to the bound water. In one example, the relaxation times are transverse relaxation times determined from CPMG spin echo amplitudes. In one example, the amplitudes are measured using truncated CPMG sequences having waiting time less than the recovery time of slower relaxing components of the bone being analyzed. In one embodiment, the collagen content of the bone is determined by determining a fluid volume from steady state free precession amplitude of the selected portion.

    Abstract: The invention is a nuclear magnetic resonance sensing apparatus comprising a magnet for inducing a static magnetic field in a region containing materials to be analyzed. The static magnetic field is polarized generally along the axis of the apparatus. The static magnetic field has a predetermined maximum longitudinal and maximum radial amplitude gradient. The apparatus includes a transmitter antenna for generating a radio frequency magnetic field in the region for exciting nuclei of the materials to be analyzed by conducting a radio frequency current through the transmitter antenna. The apparatus includes a receiving antenna for detecting a nuclear magnetic resonance signal from the excited nuclei. In a particular embodiment, the transmitter antenna and receiver antenna consist of coil pairs, each coil in a pair separated from the other by 90 degrees, to generate a circularly polarized RF magnetic field and to perform quadrature detection of the NMR signals.

    Abstract: A nuclear magnetic resonance apparatus including a magnet generating a static magnetic field in a first region containing materials to be analyzed. The magnet generates zero static magnetic field in a second region. The magnet has generally homogeneous magnetization along a longitudinal axis and is magnetized substantially perpendicular to the axis. The apparatus includes means for generating a radio frequency magnetic field in the first region for exciting nuclei of the materials. The means for generating the radio frequency magnetic field includes an antenna disposed within the second region. The apparatus includes means for receiving a nuclear magnetic resonance signal from the excited nuclei. In a preferred embodiment, the means for generating and means for receiving include an antenna at least partially disposed within the second region. In a specific embodiment, the antenna consists of wire coils wound in planes perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the instrument.

The magnet is formed from a powdered, electrically conductive permanent magnet material. The grain size of the magnet material small enough with respect to the frequency of the radio frequency magnetic field to substantially prevent intragranular power loss of the radio frequency magnetic field. The magnet is formed from electrically isolated blocks of the magnet material each having a thickness less than a skin depth of the radio frequency magnetic field within the magnet material. The boundaries between the blocks are oriented to interrupt flow of eddy currents in the magnet resulting from the radio frequency magnetic field.

The axial length of the first antenna is shorter in a direction of motion of the apparatus so that the radio frequency magnetic field excites the nuclei where they are substantially prepolarized by the static magnetic field to an equilibrium state along the direction of motion.
