Description

This non provisional application claims the benefit of French Application No. 04 14061 filed on Dec. 29, 2004 and U.S. Provisional Application No. 60/648,395 filed on Feb. 1st, 2005.

The present invention relates to a nail makeup and/or care composition comprising an alkyd resin combined with a polyester, the alkyd concentration being greater than the polyester concentration, which is capable of affording good staying power and for example long-lasting staying power. This invention also relates to a nail makeup device for obtaining long-lasting makeup. The present invention also relates to the corresponding makeup processes.

The composition may be used as a nail makeup product such as a colored nail varnish, as a nail base or “basecoat”, and a finishing composition, also known as a “topcoat”, to be applied under or over the nail makeup product, or alternatively as a cosmetic nail care product such as a treating base for protecting, strengthening and/or repairing the nails.

This composition may be applied to human nails or to false nails.

In general, film-forming agents such as nitrocellulose combined, if necessary, with another polymer known as a co-film-forming agent or co-resin and/or with plasticizers, may be used to give to the film obtained after depositing nail varnish good adhesion and good flexibility.

One of the characteristics consistently desired by nail varnish wearers is the production of a film of varnish that has the longest possible staying power. There is thus a need to find particular film-forming agent systems capable of satisfying these staying-power expectations, but also capable of uniform application of the varnish over the entire length of the nail, and good resistance of the film of varnish to impacts and to wear, for example to avoid cracking and chipping thereof.

The Applicant has discovered that it is possible to obtain makeups that show improved staying power compared with that which may be obtained in the prior art, by using compositions comprising an alkyd resin combined with a particular polyester, the weight content, relative to the total weight of the composition, of alkyd resin being greater than the weight content of polyester.

Such a composition also allows an improvement in the duration of the staying power, and the production, after application to the nails, of a uniform deposit. Moreover, the composition according to the invention has the advantage of reducing striations and also of facilitating application of the varnish up to the tip of the nails. Finally, the varnish shows good resistance to impacts and to wear, for up to seven days after application.

According to one exemplary embodiment, the present invention relates to a nail makeup and/or care composition comprising, in a physiologically acceptable medium, at least one alkyd resin and at least one polyester derived from the polycondensation of adipic acid, of a polyalcohol containing for example from 2 to 6 carbon atoms and of a compound comprising three acid and/or anhydride functions and containing for example from 8 to 16 carbon atoms, the weight content, relative to the total weight of the composition, of alkyd resin being greater than the weight content of said polyester.

According to another examplary embodiment, the present invention relates to a packaging and application assembly for a nail makeup and/or care composition, comprising:

i) a container containing the composition, said composition containing a polyester derived from the polycondensation of adipic acid, of a polyalcohol and of a compound comprising three acid and/or anhydride functions, said composition being for example a composition in accordance with the invention;

ii) an applicator comprising a stem and an application member located at one end of the stem, said application member having at least one portion of elongate cross section.

The cross section is observed, for example, in a portion adjacent the stem, for example in a plane contiguous to the free end of the stem, or in a plane located halfway along the application member or closer to the distill end of the applicator.

The composition according to the invention comprises at least one alkyd resin, and also at least one polyester as defined below, the weight content of alkyd resin, relative to the total weight of the composition, being greater than the weight content of said polyester.

Alkyd Resin

Alkyd resins contribute toward the formation of a film on the nail and allow the gloss and the adhesion of the film to be improved.

The alkyd resins used according to the invention are polyesters comprising hydrocarbon-based fatty acid chains. Such resins are described for example in the Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology—Kirk-Othmer, 4th edition, volume 2, pages 53 to 63, the content of which is incorporated into the present application by way of reference. These resins are obtained by polymerization of polyols and of polyacids or the corresponding anhydride thereof, in the presence of fatty acids. These fatty acids may be used in native form or in the form of fatty acid triglycerides or may alternatively be present in the oils during the synthesis of the alkyd resin.

On account of the presence of hydrocarbon-based fatty acid chains in the alkyd resin, alkyd resins may be defined by their oil length. Thus, according to the present invention, the term “oil length of an alkyd resin” is intented to mean the weight percentage of hydrocarbon-based fatty acid chains present in the alkyd resin.

As polyols that may be used for the synthesis of alkyd resin, mention may be made of glycerol, pentaerythritol, trimethylolpropane, trimethylolethane, neopentyl glycol, propylene glycol, ethylene glycol, 1,6-hexanediol, 1,4-butanediol and diethylene glycol.

As polyacid or anhydride, mention may be made for example of phthalic anhydride, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, trimellitic anhydride, maleic anhydride, adipic acid, fumaric acid, azaleic acid and sebacic acid.

The fatty acids used to obtain the alkyd resins present in the compositions according to the present invention correspond to the formula R—COOH, in which R denotes a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon-based radical containing from 7 to 45 carbon atoms approximately, for example from 9 to 35 carbon atoms, for example from 15 to 35 carbon atoms and for example from 15 to 21 carbon atoms.

Fatty acids that may for example be mentioned include capric acid (decanoic acid), palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, ricinoleic acid, linoleic acid and linolenic acid.

The fatty acids are present in the majority of the oils of natural origin, for example in the form of triglycerides. Fatty acid triglycerides are esters resulting from the reaction of the three alcohol functions of glycerol with fatty acids, these fatty acids possibly being identical or different. Oils of natural origin may thus be used during the polymerization. They may be chosen from linseed oil, Chinese wood oil, oititica oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, passionflower oil, castor oil, coconut oil, olive oil, palm oil, rapeseed oil, groundnut oil and tall oil.

As alkyd resins that may be used according to the invention, mention may be made for example of those sold under the names “Beckosol ODE 230 70E” by the company Dainippon Ink & Chem (phthalic anhydride/glycerol/glycidyl decanoate copolymer at 70% in ethyl acetate), “Necowel 581®” (50% in soybean oil), “Necowel 585®” (20% in sunflower oil), “Necowel 580®” (20% in oil), “Necowel 586 N®” (50% in soybean oil), “Necowel EP 1161®” (50% in soybean oil), “Necowel EP 1213®” (20% in oil), “Necowel EP 2009®” (32% in sunflower oil), “Necowel EP 2019®” (20% in oil), “Necowel EP 2275®” (35% in oil), “Necowel EP 2329®” (34% in oil), “Necowel EP 3016®” (30% in oil) by the company Ashland, “Uradil XP 515 AZ®” (73% in tall oil) and “Uradil XP 516 Az®” (63% in tall oil) by the company DSM Resins.

The alkyd resin present in the composition according to the invention may be in the form of a mixture of several alkyd resins.

According to one exemplary embodiment, the alkyd resin may be present in a solids content of greater than or equal to 2%, for example greater than or equal to 4% and for example to 6% and 8% by weight relative to the total weight of the composition.

The composition according to the present invention also comprises a polyester. This polyester is defined as being derived from the polycondensation of adipic acid, of a polyalcohol containing for example from 2 to 6 carbon atoms and of a compound comprising three acid and/or anhydride functions and containing for example from 8 to 16 carbon atoms.

Examples of polyalcohols containing from 2 to 6 carbon atoms that may for example be mentioned include neopentyl glycol (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol), ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, 1,3-propanediol, 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol, 2,3-butanediol, 2,2-propanediol, 1,1-ethanediol, glycerol, pentaerythritol, trimethylolpropane, trimethylolethane, 1,6-hexanediol, 1,4-butanediol and diethylene glycol.

The Applicant has found that the application of the composition according to the invention is facilitated by using an examplary type of applicator.

Thus, according to one examplary embodiment, the present invention relates to a packaging and application assembly for a nail makeup and/or care composition, comprising:

i) a container containing the composition, said composition containing a polyester derived from the polycondensation of adipic acid, of a polyalcohol and of a compound comprising three acid and/or anhydride functions, said composition being for example a composition in accordance with the invention;

ii) an applicator comprising a stem and an application member located at one end of the stem, said application member having at least one portion of elongate cross section, for example a portion adjacent the stem.

According to another examplary embodiment, this packaging and application assembly may be used for example for applying the composition that is the subject of the present invention, i.e. comprising said polyester, and also an alkyd resin, the weight content, relative to the total weight of the composition, of alkyd resin being greater than the weight content of said polyester.

The application member may consist of an arrangement of bristles, also referred to as a bundle of bristles, implanted in an end portion of the stem, in the form of at least one tuft of elongate cross section at its base or in the form of a plurality of adjacent tufts, which may then each have a circular cross section, for example.

The elongate form in cross section of the application member, when it is a bundle of bristles, may be obtained, for example, by means of a particular implantation of said bristles and/or by means of a housing having an aperture whose cross section has a suitable shape, for example noncircular, for example rectangular, oval or kidney-shaped.

Applicators comprising an arrangement of bristles as application member and the housing of which, which receives said bristles in the stem, has an aperture of oblong cross section along an axis of greater length and whose stem comprises a wall of variable thickness around the housing, may be used in the context of the present invention.

Irrespective of the shape of the housing that receives them, the bristles may be attached to the stem in numerous ways, for example by being stapled, overinjected, bonded and/or attached by crimping or stamping of the stem.

The bundle of bristles may comprise bristles that are of the same or different nature. The bundle of bristles may comprise, for example, a mixture of bristles, for example bristles of different hardnesses and/or shapes, for example bristles with different cross sections and/or possibly having waves.

The bristles may be made with additives that increase the force of retention of product by capillary action or that promote the slipperiness. The choice of bristles and of the shape of the bundle may be made for example as a function of the rheological properties of the composition.

The application member may alternatively consist of a spatula. Other application members may also be used, such as application members with capillary retention, with a felt or with a flocked tip.

Such application members are described for example in patent U.S. Pat. No. 6,220,254 as regards the application members of spatula type or application members whose surface is flocked, i.e. covered with fine hairs. As regards the application members of flocked or foam type, reference may also be made to document EP 693 263. Patent U.S. Pat. No. 6,666,607 itself describes application members of applicator type by capillary retention. All of these documents describing various types of application member are incorporated herein by reference.

Moreover, the application member may be obtained by molding with the stem or may be added onto the stem. The stem may be rigid or flexible. The stem may be curved or straight.

It has been found that the applicator as described in document US 2004/0 096 261 A1, which is incorporated into the present text by reference, is for example suited to applying the composition as defined above, allowing a precise, uniform application and avoiding the formation of striations.

Thus, according to another examplary embodiment, the present invention relates to a packaging and application assembly for applying a makeup and/or care composition as defined above to the nails, comprising a container containing the composition according to the invention defined above and an applicator comprising a stem and bristles fixed in a housing of an end portion of the stem, the housing having an aperture of noncircular and for example oblong cross section, said cross section being for example elongate along an axis of greater length, the stem comprising for example a wall of variable thickness around the housing.

According to one examplary embodiment, the stem has, in its end portion, a cross section having an outer contour that has no concavity, with the exception of a groove or of two grooves located opposite each other, this or these grooves extending along at least a part of the stem and being located substantially, when the stem is observed in cross section, halfway along the axis of greatest length of the housing receiving the bristles.

The outer contour having no concavity may be convex and may comprise, where appropriate, at least one flat side.

For example, the stem has in cross section at least one groove or two grooves located opposite each other, this or these grooves extending along at least a part of the stem and being located substantially, when the stem is observed in cross section, halfway along the axis of greatest length of the housing receiving the bristles.

Thus, the thickness of product surrounding the stem may be greater in the groove(s) than on the sides.

The nail varnish composition as defined above that flows along the stem when the applicator is extracted from the container thus reaches the bundle of bristles for example in a substantially central region thereof, such that the composition may be spread under good conditions. The amount of composition reaching the sides of the brush is reduced.

As mentioned above, the stem may comprise a second groove opposite the first, and the applicator may be symmetrical relative to a midplane.

The two grooves may be for example symmetrical relative to a midplane parallel to the axis X, but it would not constitute a departure from the context of the present invention if the grooves were of different shapes.

The invention may be understood more clearly on reading the detailed description that follows, of nonlimiting embodiments thereof, and on inspection of the attached drawing, in which:

FIG. 1 is a schematic view, in axial cross section, of a packaging and application assembly for a composition as defined above,

FIG. 2 partially represents the applicator of the device of FIG. 1,

FIG. 3 represents in isolation, in axial cross section, the stem of the applicator of FIG. 1,

FIG. 4 represents a detail of the housing receiving the bristles of the brush,

FIG. 5 is a cross section along V-V of FIG. 4,

FIG. 6 is a cross section to enlarged scale along VI-VI of FIG. 2, and

FIG. 7 is a view similar to FIG. 6 representing a variant in which the bundle of bristles is in the form of a plurality of adjacent tufts,

FIG. 8 is a perspective view of the end of the stem comprising an application member of spatula type,

FIG. 9 is a perspective view of the end of the stem comprising an application member of the type with capillary retention,

FIG. 10 is a perspective view of the end of the stem comprising an application member of felt type, and

FIG. 11 is a perspective view of the end of the stem comprising an application member with a flocked tip.

FIG. 1 shows a packaging and application assembly 1 for the application of a nail varnish composition V, as defined above. This packaging and application assembly 1 comprises a container 2 containing the composition V and an applicator 3 comprising a plastic stem 4 equipped, in the illustrated example, at one end with a flat brush 5 and at the other end with a handle member 10 also constituting a stopper for closing the container 2.

The container 2 also comprises a bead 6, for example a metal bead, for homogenizing the varnish V before application, by shaking the device 1.

If reference is made to FIGS. 2 to 5, it may be seen that the stem 4 comprises at its top end a skirt 8 for fixing it in a housing of the lid 10, this lid being configured to screw onto the neck 11 of the container 2.

A collar 12 is made at the base of the skirt 8 to rest against the upper section of the neck 11 when the applicator is in place on the container 2.

The stem 4 comprises under the collar 12 a conical part 13 that can contribute toward the leaktightness of closure of the container 2 when the applicator 3 is in place thereon. The leaktightness may also be obtained via cooperation of surfaces of the stopper 10 and of the neck of the container.

The stem 4 also comprises a lower end portion 14, which is provided with a housing 15 in which are fixed the bristles of the brush 5, for example by stapling, bonding, fusion or overmolding.

A beveled edge 20 may be made at the free end of the stem 4, as may be seen in FIG. 4.

The stem 4 comprises, in the illustrated example, over a majority of its length down to its distal end 17, two opposite longitudinal grooves 18.

The housing 15 has an aperture of rectangular cross section, which is of elongate shape along an axis X perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the stem 4.

The outer contour of the stem 4 and the housing 15 are, in the example under consideration, symmetrical relative to the axis X and relative to a median axis Y perpendicular to the axis X.

It may be seen in FIG. 5 that the thickness e of material surrounding the housing 15 is not constant, in the example under consideration. The thickness e might, in one examplary embodiment not illustrated, be constant, without this departing from the context of the present invention.

Besides the grooves 18, the outer contour 16 of the stem 4, when this stem is observed in cross section, is convex. For example, in the example under consideration, the contour of the stem 4 is delimited at the grooves 18 by circle portions 16a, these circle portions being joined on the sides by circle portions 16b that are convex toward the exterior and with a smaller radius of curvature than the portions 16a.

The housing 15 may have, as may be seen in FIG. 4, a cross section that decreases in the direction of the base 19 of the housing. The bristles of the brush 5 spread out when the brush is applied to the nail.

In the example of FIG. 2, the bundle of bristles has, in cross section, about one third of the way along its apparent length l, starting from its free end, a substantially flattened cross section, as may be seen in FIG. 6.

In the illustrated example, the thickness of the bundle is substantially constant but this may be otherwise, and the thickness of the bundle may, for example, increase or decrease on approaching the midplane perpendicular to the axis X.

The bundle may consist of the implantation of one or more tufts of bristles in the stem. FIG. 7 shows a bundle 5 of bristles comprising several adjacent tufts 30.

Other application members will be described with reference to FIGS. 8 to 11.

FIG. 8 shows an application member 40 of spatula type that substantially follows the shape of the nails by virtue of its slightly incurved shape. The cross section of the application member 40 in a section plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis Z has the general shape of a circle arc, adapted to the curvature of the nail.

FIG. 9 shows an application member 50 comprising a tubular wall 51 having in cross section an oblong shape, with at its center, a retention member 52 that makes, with the tubular wall 51 a circular space 53 of substantially constant width, chosen as a function of the nature of the product to be applied, such that the product is retained by surface tension between the tubular wall 51 and the retention member 52.

FIG. 10 shows an application member 60 made of felt, the mid-length cross section of which is of oblong shape.

FIG. 11 shows an application member 70 with a flocked surface, of substantially flattened shape.

The packaging and application assembly 1 is used in the following manner.

The user shakes the container 2 to allow the bead 6 to homogenize the nail varnish composition V as defined above, and the user then unscrews the stopper 10 and uses the brush 5 to apply said composition.

When the applicator 3 is removed from the container 2, composition is present on the stem 4 and this composition can run by gravity in the direction of the brush 5. The thickness of product is greater in the grooves 18, which can retain more of the composition by capillary action. The composition preferentially flows into the central region of the brush, which allows it to be spread more easily and more precisely.
