BedSide Boards

Four related versions of legless tables that are either anchored to or supported by an existing mattress and box spring or bed frame in a bedroom. Being legless keeps the floor space clear and easier to clean. Being anchored to the existing bed provides stability that makes them impossible to knock over.

Description

This invention is referred to as BedSide Boards (BSBs). The BSBs are a series of space efficient tables designed to be utilized in bedrooms in conjunction with existing beds. The BSBs are particularly practical when floor space is tight in a bedroom. Materials used in the fabrication of the BedSide Boards can vary from all wood, to all plastic, to a combination of wood, metal, composite materials and plastic. There are four versions of the BedSide Boards (1) BedSide SideBoard; (2) BedSide Dual-SideBoards; (3) BedSide FootBoard; (4) BedSide Pivoting & Height Adjustable SideBoard. All versions of the BedSide Boards are designed to be anchored to or supported by existing mattress and box spring or the bed frame.

(1) BedSide SideBoard: The BedSide SideBoard consists of a board or boards approximately 3-feet in length by 4- to 6-inches wide by ½- to 1-inch thick. At the end of this 3-foot length board is an 18- by 4-inch wide “T” to stabilize vertical movements at the table ends. The BedSide SideBoard is designed to be inserted between the mattress and box spring, or if there is no box spring, between the mattress and the bed platform or floor. FIG. 1A is a top plan view of the Bedside Board. FIG. 1B is a left side elevational view of the Bedside Board. FIG. 1C is a front elevational view of the Bedside Board.

(2) BedSide Dual-SideBoards: The BedSide Dual-SideBoard consists of a spanner board 4- to 6-inches wide by ½- to 1-inch thick, protruding approximately 6- to 12-inches on both sides of a bed. The spanner board shall be clamped to the underside of both sides of the bed frame. The spanner board shall support the uprights and the table surfaces of the BedSide Boards. FIG. 2A is a top plan view of the Bedside Dual-SideBoards. FIG. 2B is a front elevational view of the Bedside Dual-SideBoards. FIG. 2C is a left side elevational view of the Bedside Dual-SideBoards.

(3) BedSide FootBoard: The BedSide FootBoard consists of two 36-inch angle irons comparable to the bed frame in dimension and gauge bent at two 45-degree angles, one 21-inches from the end, the second at 27-inches from the same end, to finally form a 90-degree angle at one end of each angle iron. The added angle irons shall be clamped over each side of the existing bed frame, under the box spring, using 2-metal clamps per side with a threaded “L”. One clamp shall be positioned and secured approximately one inch from the end of the existing bed frame. The second clamp shall be positioned and secured near the end of the added angle iron approximately 15- to 18-inches in from the foot-side of the existing frame. The bent ends of the angle iron shall protrude past the foot side of the bed shall be positioned at true horizontal pointed towards the center of the bed and each other. A spanner board approximately 6-inches deep by the width, (varies with the size of the bed i.e. twin, double, queen and king) by 1-inch thick shall be placed parallel to the section of the angle irons pointed towards one another and also parallel to the foot-side of the bed. The spanner board shall be mechanically fastened to the angle irons to create a rigid horizontal surface. The spanner board shall support two approximately 12-inch uprights which in turn support the FootSide Board. The dimension of the FootSide Board surface shall be 13- to 18-inches deep×1-inch thick by (the width of the bed less 4- to 6-inches). FIG. 3A is a top plan view of the BedSide FootBoard. (4) BedSide Pivoting & Height Adjustable SideBoards: The pivoting and adjustable version of the BedSide Boards consists of a spanner board 4- to 6-inches wide by ½- to 1-inch thick, protruding approximately 6- to 12-inches on both sides of a bed. The spanner board shall be clamped to the underside of both sides of the bed frame. The spanner board shall support the uprights and the table surfaces of the BedSide Boards. The uprights shall be cylindrical and telescoping to allow for adjustability as well as providing the ability for the board to pivot up to 360 degrees to a position over the mattress and above the occupant of the mattress. The height adjustability shall be provided a telescoping shaft locked in the desired position by spring activated locking pins; or a threaded hand tightened knob locking on the telescoping shaft; or a pneumatic cylinder activated with the depression of a lever raising the level of the surface. When a downward pressure is applied while the lever is depressed, the telescoping shaft will retract. When raised to clear the occupant of the bed, the BedSide Board will serve as a surface for food, reading materials, a laptop computer or any other item requiring a surface while a person is in bed. No drawing was submitted for the BedSide Pivoting & Height Adjustable SideBoards. It is a duplicate of the Dual-SideBoards with the addition of the adjustable and pivoting mechanisms.

Claims

1. BedSide SideBoards: A legless table surface designed to be inserted between the mattress and box spring, or if there is no box spring, between the mattress and the bed platform or floor.

2. BedSide Dual-SideBoards: Legless table surfaces consisting of a spanner board clamped to the underside of both sides of the bed frame providing a stable platform to support the uprights and the two table surfaces of the BedSide Boards, one on each side of a bed.

3. BedSide FootBoard: A Legless table at the foot of an existing bed with two angle irons, one on each side is clamped above the existing bed frame, under the box spring to provide support and stability. A spanner board supports two 12-inch tall uprights which in turn support the FootSide Board. The widths of the FootSide Board surfaces are proportionate to the bed size i.e. twin, full, queen and king.

4. BedSide Pivoting & Height Adjustable SideBoard: A pivoting and height adjustable version of the BedSide Board consisting of a spanner board clamped to the underside of both sides of the bed frame. The spanner board shall support the adjustable height uprights and the table surfaces. The table surfaces shall have the ability to pivot a full 360 degrees to a position over the mattress and above the occupant of the mattress.
