STATEMENT REGARDING FEDERAL SPONSORSHIP

BACKGROUND OF INVENTION

The exclusion of water from camping equipment and tents in particular is a long sought goal of camping equipment designers. A common approach to exclusion of water or other liquids from the base area of a tent is provision of a water proof base for the tent as exemplified by the patents to Hardee (European Patent Number 1312733), Gladden (U.S. Pat. No. 3,586,013), and Bareis (U.S. Pat. No. 4,305,414). The present invention provides a water exclusion system which is not an integral portion of any particular tent or tent design and therefore has the advantage of extending the useful life of a tent with an integral water tight base when the integral base loses its liquid exclusion properties through normal wear or damage. Further the present invention provides liquid exclusion for tents with non liquid excluding floors and tents without floors.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The water exclusion system for a tent comprises a liquid proof sheet sized to exceed the base dimensions of a tent; and one or more fasteners for attaching said sheet to the walls of said tent to form a liquid proof tub containing the base and a lower portion of the tent walls. The fasteners may be of any type whatever provided that they serve to detachably attach the edges of the sheet to the sidewalls of the tent and thereby form a liquid proof tub capable of excluding water from the base area of the tent. The fasteners may be comprised of strips of hook and loop materials, snaps, hook and eye assemblies, or any other fasteners capable of detachably attaching the liquid proof sheet to the walls of the tent to form a waterproof tub.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The water exclusion system 1 for a tent 2 comprises a liquid proof sheet 3 sized to exceed the base 4 dimensions of a tent 2; and one or more fasteners 5 for attaching said sheet 3 to the walls 6 of said tent 2 to form a liquid proof tub 7 containing the base 4 and a lower portion of the tent walls 6. The fasteners 5 may be of any type whatever provided that they serve to detachably attach the edges 8 of the sheet 3 to the sidewalls 6 of the tent 2 and thereby form a liquid proof tub 7 capable of excluding water from the base 4 area of the tent 2. The fasteners 5 may be comprised of strips of hook and loop materials 9, snaps, hook and eye assemblies, or any other fasteners 5 capable of being detachably attaching the liquid proof sheet 3 to the walls 6 of the tent 2 to form a waterproof tub 7. Any combination of fastener types may be employed in a single instance of the water exclusion system 1 to accomplish economy of manufacture or ease of use or both provided that the fastener set employed causes the liquid proof sheet 3 to form a liquid proof tub 7 which excludes water from the base 4 area of the tent 2.

It will also be appreciated that the formation of the liquid-proof tub 7 includes the formation of corners or curves to accommodate the shape of the tent base 4. Said corners and curves may be accomplished by folding, heat sealing, pre-forming or any other suitable means which creates and maintains the liquid-proof characteristics of the tub 4 so formed.

The water exclusion system 1 for a tent 2 is most effective when used in conjunction with a rain fly 12.

In one embodiment the water exclusion system 1 has one or both ends of the selected fasteners 5 attached to a patch of material 10 suitable to be adhesively attached to the tent walls 6 and the liquid proof sheet 3. In another embodiment the water exclusion system 1 has one or both ends of the selected fasteners 5 attached to a patch of material suitable to be attached to the tent walls 6 and the liquid proof sheet 3 by means of stitching 11.

It will be appreciated that the selection of methods of attachment of the fasteners 5 to the tent walls 6 or to the liquid proof sheet 3 is dependant on many factors including the material from which the tent wall 6 or liquid proof sheet 3 is constructed. Therefore various combinations of methods of attaching the fasteners 5 to the tent walls 6 and the

Liquid proof sheet 3 may be employed in a single instance of the water exclusion system 1.

Claims

1) A water exclusion system for a tent, said tent having a base and one or more walls, said system comprising:

a) A liquid proof sheet sized to exceed the base dimensions of said tent; and
b) One or more fasteners for attaching said sheet to said walls to form a liquid proof tub containing said base and a portion of said walls.

2) The water exclusion system of claim 1 wherein said fasteners comprise a first hook and loop strip and a second hook and loop strip with said first hook and loop strip attached to one of said walls and said second hook and loop strip attached to said liquid proof sheet.

3) The water exclusion system of claim 1 wherein said fasteners comprise a first and second patch, said first patch adhesively affixed to one of said walls and said second patch adhesively attached to said liquid proof sheet and said first patch having a first part of a snap affixed thereon and said second patch having a second part of a snap affixed thereon.

4) The water exclusion system of claim 1 wherein said fasteners comprise a first and second patch, said first patch adhesively affixed to one of said walls and said second patch adhesively attached to said liquid proof sheet and said first patch having an eye affixed thereon and said second patch having a hook affixed thereon.
