CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION

This application claims the benefit under 35 U.S.C. §119(a) of Korean Patent Application No. 10-2007-0046847 filed on May 15, 2007, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. Field of the Invention

The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a cylinder head system for a vehicle.

2. Background Art

A typical cylinder head system is manufactured by injecting a casting in a mold. During the injection molding, an exhaust manifold core and a water jacket core are provided to form an exhaust manifold and a water jacket.

In the finished product, a cylinder is positioned at the lower part of the exhaust manifold and the water jacket is positioned around the cylinder.

Therefore, in the conventional manufacturing method, dead space may be created between runners of the exhaust manifold.

As the runner of the exhaust manifold has a streamlined shape, there is interference between a burr of the water jacket core and the exhaust manifold core. Removing the burr during assembly is time-consuming and labor-intensive.

The information disclosed in this Background of the Invention section is only for enhancement of understanding of the background of the invention and should not be taken as an acknowledgement or any form of suggestion that this information forms the prior art that is already known to a person skilled in the art.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

A method for manufacturing a cylinder head system for a vehicle includes manufacturing a first main mold having an exhaust manifold mold and a first water jacket mold; manufacturing a second main mold having a second water jacket mold; and assembling the first main mold to the second main mold. The exhaust manifold mold is configured to form an exhaust manifold, the first water jacket mold is configured to form a first water jacket for cooling the exhaust manifold, and the second water jacket mold is configured to form a second water jacket for cooling a cylinder block.

The exhaust manifold mold may be several exhaust manifold molds, and the first water jacket mold may be disposed between the exhaust manifold molds. The main molds may be sand-mold cores.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a first main mold in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention;

FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a second main mold in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention;

FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the second main mold of FIG. 2 connected to a cylinder block; and

FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the first main mold of FIG. 1 connected to the second main mold and the cylinder block of FIG. 3.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Reference will now be made in detail to preferred embodiments of the present invention, examples of which are illustrated in the drawings attached hereinafter, wherein like reference numerals refer to like elements throughout. Some embodiments are described below so as to explain the present invention by referring to the figures.

As shown in FIGS. 1 through 4, a method for manufacturing a cylinder head system for a vehicle in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention includes manufacturing a first main mold 100, including an exhaust manifold mold 101 and a first water jacket mold 103; manufacturing a second main mold 200, including a second water jacket mold 201; and connecting the first main mold to the second main mold.

Referring to FIG. 1, the exhaust manifold mold 101 and the first water jacket mold 103 are integral to each other, and supported by a core print 105.

The first main mold 100 can also be referred to as a core, in that it is placed in a casing to form a hollow portion.

The core print 105 supports the core from the inside of the mold. The core print 105 can be designed and implemented by a person of ordinary skill in the art based on the teachings herein.

The water jacket formed by the first water jacket mold 103 cools the exhaust manifold formed by the exhaust manifold mold 101. Likewise, the water jacket formed by the second water jacket mold 201 cools the cylinder block formed by the cylinder block mold 301.

Referring to FIGS. 3 and 4, the method for manufacturing a cylinder head system in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the present invention further includes connecting the first main mold 100 to the second main mold 200.

More particularly, FIG. 3 illustrates the second main mold 200 connected to the cylinder block mold 301, and FIG. 4 illustrates the first main mold 100 connected to the second main mold 200 and the cylinder block mold 301 of FIG. 3.

According to preferred embodiments of the present invention, since the first water jacket mold 103 is between the exhaust manifold molds 101, the first main mold 100 can easily be connected to the second main mold 200. That is, the first main mold 100 can be connected to the second main mold 200 simply by fixing them together.

Accordingly, the present invention provides a simpler manufacturing process than in the prior art. In addition, since the first water jacket mold 103 is disposed between the exhaust manifold molds 101, through which high temperature exhaust gas passes, cooling performance is improved over the prior art.

The first and second main molds 100 and 200 may be sand-mold cores; however, the present invention is not limited thereto.

As above, preferred embodiments of the present invention have been described and illustrated, however, the present invention is not limited thereto, rather, it should be understood that various modifications and variations of the present invention can be made thereto by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and the technical scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
