Description
TECHNICAL FIELD

The invention relates to clothing hoods and more particularly to a hood for a protective helmet.

Protective helmets which are widely used in the mining, building and manufacturing industries usually have a crown and a front projecting peak. A visor may be pivotally mounted on the crown.

It is an object of this invention to provide a multi-fit protection hood for such protective helmets.

BACKGROUND ART

According to one embodiment of the invention there is provided a hood for protective helmet having at least a crown and a forwardly projecting peak, the hood comprising a crown portion adapted to cover the crown of the helmet, a rear portion and side portions depending downwardly from the crown of the hood adapted to cover the ears and neck of the wearer, and each side portion having a forwardly projecting flap having fastening means to secure the flaps under the chin of the wearer, and a sleeve portion projecting forwardly of the crown adapted to receive the peak of the protective helmet.

Preferably, the rear portion having adjustable means, to adjust the length of the rear of the hood.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

FIG. 1 is a front elevational view of a hood for a protective helmet according to one embodiment of the invention with the peak sleeve in its normal position.

FIG. 2 is a view similar to FIG. 1 with the peak sleeve in a raised position,

FIG. 3 is a side elevational view of the hood shown in FIGS. 1 and 2,

FIG. 4 is a rear view of the hood shown in FIGS. 1 and 2,

FIG. 5 is a side view of a hood according to the invention mounted on a protective helmet in use on a wearer, and

FIG. 6 is a front elevational view of the hood and protective helmet shown in FIG. 5.

BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION

The hood 10 for a protective helmet shown in the drawings has a crown portion 11, rear portion 12 and side portions 12a and 12b depending downwardly from the crown portion 11 and a peak sleeve 13 projecting forwardly from the crown 11.

On each side portion 12a and 12b there are side flaps 14 and 15 which are adjustably secured together by fastening means 16 and 17 beneath the chin of the wearer.

The rear portion 12 may have a seam seal protection strip 18 which continues up and over the crown 11. As shown in FIG. 4, a rear hood adjustment means 19 is fastened to the protection strip 18 so that the length of the rear portion may be adjusted to suit a particular wearer and/or a particular helmet.

The peak sleeve 13 has upper and lower panels 20 and 21 which define a pocket to receive the peak 22 as shown in FIG. 5.

The fastening means 16 and 17 on the side flaps 14 and 15 may conveniently be made from Velcro interlocking hook and loop strip material. The rear hood adjustment means 19 on the seam sealed protection strip 18 may also be made of Velcro material. Other fastening means could be used on the side flaps 14 and 15 and other adjustment means may be used on the protection strip 18.

In this embodiment of the invention, the upper part of each side portion and the rear of each side of the peak sleeve 13 are so shaped to define a recess 23 to receive the pivot point 24 of the visor 25 of the helmet 26.

Various modifications may be made in details of shape and configuration of the hood for the protective helmet without departing from the scope and ambit of the invention.

INDUSTRIAL APPLICABILITY

The present invention has industrial applicability within the manufacturing and consumer goods markets.
