PROTECTIVE WRAPPER FOR ROLLS AND METHOD FOR WRAPPING A ROLL USING THE SAME

The present document describes a protective wrapper for a roll having two ends and a length defining a distance between the two ends, the protective wrapper comprising: first one layer of paper material having two opposed edges and an edge strip at at least one of the two opposed edges of the first layer of paper material, the edge strip comprises one and only one layer of the paper material and the edge strip is for being inwardly crimped against one of the two ends; and a layer of protective material superposed to the first layer of paper material, the layer of protective material not overlapping the edge strip; wherein the first layer of paper material has a width greater than the distance between the two ends of the roll.

CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

This application claims priority under 35USC§119(e) of U.S. provisional patent application 61/671,199, filed on Jul. 13, 2012, the specification of which is hereby incorporated by reference.

BACKGROUND

(a) Field

The subject matter disclosed generally relates to protective wrapper for rolls to prevent penetration by liquid, such as water. More particularly, the subject matter disclosed relates to protective wrapper for paper rolls that provides impermeable roll ends and to a method for wrapping a paper roll using the same.

(b) Related Prior Art

Newsprint and other forms of paper are manufactured and processed as large elongated sheets or webs. For storage and transport, the paper stock is wrapped around a core to form a cylindrical paper roll. The paper rolls may be very heavy. A typical paper roll may range from about 25 to about 72 inches in diameter and, sometimes, as large as about 145 inches or more. To protect the paper roll from moisture, the atmosphere, and physical abrasions, the paper roll itself is wrapped in a moisture proof paper for paper rolls. Typically the paper rolls are then stacked one on the other and stored on end. Specialized machinery must be employed to automatically apply wrapping material or wrapping papers to the large paper rolls.

Various methods have previously been used to wrap paper rolls. One of the most known methods has been to first wrap the roll in one or two layers of a protective wrapping paper, with the wrapping paper extending outwardly beyond the end of the paper roll. Next, interior roll headers (i.e., disks formed of corrugated cardboard, chipboard, coated chipboards, laminated Kraft paper and the like) are fitted inside the wrapping paper against the ends of the paper roll. The wrapping paper is then crimped over the edges of the inner roll headers at the ends of the paper rolls using a crimping wheel or any other appropriate technique. A set of outer roll headers (i.e., somewhat thinner disks typically formed of a Kraft paper with a polymer coating on the inside surface) are then attached to the ends of the paper roll over the crimped edges. The inner and outer roll headers and the wrapping paper are held in place and affixed to one another through the use of an adhesive, such as a heat sensitive material (i.e., a polymer coating), on the inside surface of the outer roll header and/or the outward face of the inner roll header.

The outer roll headers are affixed to the ends of the paper rolls in a typical roll wrapping machine by applying heat, pressure or the like in accordance with the properties of the adhesive material used.

However, with the technique described above, the wrapping paper is not perfectly sealed at the ends of the paper rolls, even though the wrapping paper and the inner and/or outer roll headers, if any, are rendered watertight due to polymeric coatings. Indeed, channels are formed in the crimp, i.e., crimp tunnels that allow liquid infiltration along the crimps when the wrapped paper rolls is in contact with liquids during storage and, more particularly, transport. The infiltrated liquid flows towards the inner roll header and the paper roll, causing damages to the later. Damage typically happens during roll transportation, transit, and warehousing when environmental water (i.e., hail, sleet, snow, water puddles along the route, etc.) enters the trailer or boxcar through defective walls, floors, doors and the like. Infiltration occurs through the end of the wrapped paper roll, notwithstanding use of watertight wrapper and headers, because wrapped roll is standing on its end on a floor that is often getting wet during transit. Damage to the paper rolls incurs financial burden to the purchaser, the manufacturer, and/or the transporter.

Other methods have previously been used to wrap paper rolls. For example, some methods provide a wrapping paper for a paper roll having two opposed roll ends, where the wrapping paper includes a paper layer and at least one exposed strip having adhesive properties. These paper layers bonded with the at least one exposed strip provide the crimped edges with a thickness which promote the formation of channels in the crimp. In this example, the exposed strip has an adhesive layer.

For these reasons, there is certainly a need to provide an improved protective wrapper for paper rolls that provide impervious roll ends and that is less expensive and still very resistant to humidity and moisture at the ends of the paper rolls and a method for wrapping a roll using the same.

SUMMARY

According to an embodiment, there is provide a protective wrapper for a roll having two ends and a length defining a distance between the two ends, the protective wrapper comprising: first layer of paper material having two opposed edges and an edge strip at at least one of the two opposed edges of the first layer of paper material, the edge strip comprises one and only one layer of the paper material and the edge strip is for being inwardly crimped against one of the two ends; and a layer of protective material superposed to the first layer of paper material, the layer of protective material not overlapping the edge strip; wherein the first layer of paper material has a width greater than the distance between the two ends of the roll.

According to another embodiment, the layer of protective material comprises ethylene methacryalate, ethylene-vinyl acetate, polyurethane, polyethylene, polypropylene, high density polyethylene and any combination thereof.

According to a further embodiment, the protective wrapper further comprises a second layer of paper material superposed to at least one of: the first layer of paper material and the layer of protective material, the second layer of paper material not overlapping the edge strip.

According to yet another embodiment, the second layer of paper material is superposed to the layer of protective material, such that the layer of protective material is not exposed.

According to another embodiment, the layer of protective material is superposed to a side of the first layer of paper material and wherein the protective wrapper further comprises a second layer of protective material superposed to another side of the first layer of paper material, the second layer of protective material not overlapping the edge strip.

According to a further embodiment, at least one of: the first layer of paper material and the second layer of paper material includes a material in the group consisting of: a conventional type of flexible paper, a flexible type of flexible cardboard, a linerboard, a laminated paper, a virgin Kraft paper, a recycled paper or a combination thereof.

According to yet another embodiment, the edge strip comprises two edge strips, each one of the two edge strips is for being inwardly crimped against a corresponding one of the two ends of the roll.

According to another embodiment, the protective wrapper further comprises two inner roll headers installed at each one of the two ends of the roll and wherein the two edge strips are for being inwardly crimped against the two inner roll headers.

According to a further embodiment, the protective wrapper further comprises an outer roll header for covering at least partially at least one of the two ends and the crimped edge strip, thereby providing protection against the elements at at least one of the two ends of the roll.

According to yet another embodiment, the protective wrapper further comprises an inner roll header to be installed at at least one of the two ends of the roll and wherein the edge strip is for being inwardly crimped against the inner roll header.

According to another embodiment, the inner roll header covers at least partially at least one of the two ends of the roll.

According to a further embodiment, the inner roll header defines a disc-like shape.

According to yet another embodiment, the outer roll header defines a disc-like shape.

According to another embodiment, the inner roll header defines a disc-like shape and wherein the disc-like shape of the inner roll header and the disc-like shape of the outer roll header define an equivalent disc-like shape.

According to a further embodiment, the protective wrapper further comprises a layer of heat sensitive material coated to at least one of: the inner roll header and the outer roll header for linking the at least one of: the inner roll header and the outer roll header with the crimped edge strip, the layer of heat sensitive material having a surface area not exceeding another surface area of the ends of the roll.

According to yet another embodiment, the outer roll header comprises two outer roll headers and the inner roll header comprises two inner roll headers, one of each for each one of the two ends of the roll.

According to another embodiment, at least one of: the outer roll header and the inner roll header further comprises adhesive properties for being linked with the crimped edge strip and wherein the adhesive properties are activated by heat, infrared, ultraviolet light, ultrasound, pressure, microwaves, radiowaves, X-rays or any combination thereof.

According to another embodiment, there is provided a protective wrapper for a roll having two ends and a length defining a distance between the two ends, the protective wrapper comprising: an inner roll header to be installed at at least one of the two ends; first layer of paper material having two opposed edges and an edge strip at at least one of the two opposed edges of the first layer of paper material, the edge strip comprises one and only one layer of the paper material and the edge strip is for being inwardly crimped against the inner roll header; a layer of protective material superposed to the first layer of paper material, the layer of protective material not overlapping the edge strip; and an outer roll header for covering at least partially the inner roll header and the crimped edge strip, thereby providing protection against the elements at at least one of the two ends of the roll; wherein the first layer of paper material has a width greater than the distance between the two ends of the roll.

According to a further embodiment, the edge strip comprises two edge strips, each one of the two edge strips is for being inwardly crimped against a respective inner roll header at a corresponding one of the two ends of the roll.

According to a further embodiment, there is provided a method for wrapping a roll having two ends and a length defining a distance between the two ends, the method comprising the steps of: installing an inner roll header at at least one of the two ends of the roll; wrapping the roll with a first layer of paper material having a width greater than the length of the roll and an edge strip which comprises one and only one layer of the paper material, the first layer of paper material being superposed to a layer of protective material which has a width not exceeding the distance between the two ends of the roll; and inwardly crimping the edge strip against at least one of the two ends of the roll for contributing to the reduction of overlapped areas and crimp tunnels on the at least one of the two ends.

Features and advantages of the subject matter hereof will become more apparent in light of the following detailed description of selected embodiments, as illustrated in the accompanying figures. As will be realized, the subject matter disclosed and claimed is capable of modifications in various respects, all without departing from the scope of the claims. Accordingly, the drawings and the description are to be regarded as illustrative in nature and not as restrictive and the full scope of the subject matter is set forth in the claims.

It will be noted that throughout the appended drawings, like features are identified by like reference numerals.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

In embodiments there is disclosed a protective wrapper for protecting rolls to prevent penetration by liquids, such as water, and, more particularly, there is disclosed a protective wrapper that provides impervious roll ends.

Referring now to the drawings, and more particularly to FIG. 1, there is shown a perspective view of a roll 20 being wrapped in a protective wrapper 30. For example, the roll 20 may be a conventional paper roll 20 which has a longitudinal roll axis 22, a pair of longitudinally spaced-apart roll ends 24, 25 and an outer roll surface 26 extending between the roll ends 24, 25 and radially spaced along the longitudinal roll axis 22. The roll 20 is characterized by a length L1 along the longitudinal roll axis 22.

The roll 20 is wrapped with a first layer of paper material 40 which has a width W1, longer than the length L1 of the roll 20, in a manner such that the longitudinal edge strips 32a, 32b of the first layer of paper material 40 extend outwardly beyond the roll ends 24, 25 or such that only one of the longitudinal edge strips 32a or 32b (32a and 32b on FIG. 1) of the first layer of paper material 40 extend outwardly beyond one roll end 24 or 25. The edge strips 32a or 32b comprises one and only one layer of the paper material. In general, the edge strips 32a, 32b of the protective wrapper 30 typically extend between about one to ten inches and, preferably, between about two to three inches, beyond the roll ends 24, 25 but that they can be wider or narrower.

According to an embodiment and still referring to FIG. 1, there is provided a protective wrapper 30 for a roll 20 which has two ends 24, 25 and a length L1. The roll 20 has a disk-shaped (i.e., or any suitable shape) inner roll header 34 (FIGS. 1 and 3) installed at one of the two ends 24, 25. The protective wrapper 30 includes the first layer of paper material 40 which has a width W1 greater than the length L1 of the roll 20 and an at least one edge strip 32a and/or 32b. Again, the edge strips 32a or 32b comprises one and only one layer of the paper material. The protective wrapper 30 also includes a layer of protective material 42 (FIG. 4 and FIGS. 5A-5F) superposed to the first layer of paper material 40. The layer of protective material 42 is not overlapping the edge strip 32a and/or 32b. The edge strips 32a and/or 32b are for being inwardly crimped against at least one of the two ends 24, 25 and/or the inner roll header 34 of the roll 20 thereby contributing to the reduction of overlapped areas 38 (FIG. 2) and crimp tunnels on the at least one of the two ends 24, 25. Indeed, since the protective wrapper 30 includes first layer of paper material 40 extending from at least one roll end 24 or 25, the protective wrapper 30 is then thinner at the ends 24, 25 of the roll 20 and easier to be crimped towards one of the roll ends 24, 25 or towards one of the inner roll header 34, 35.

According to another embodiment, and now referring to FIGS. 5C, 5D, 5E and 5F, the protective wrapper 30 may further includes a second layer of paper material 44 superposed to the layer of paper material 40 and the layer of protective material 42. It is to be noted that the second layer of paper material 44 also has a width W2 not exceeding the length L1 of the roll 20 or not overlapping the edge strip 32a and/or 32b. More preferably, the second layer of paper material 44 is superposed to the layer of protective material 42, such that the layer of protective material 42 is not exposed. More particularly, as shown on FIG. 5A, the layer of protective material 42 is superposed to the first layer of paper material 40 for providing two exposed edge strips 32a, 32b. FIG. 5B shows a layer of protective material 42 superposed to the first layer of paper material 40 for providing only one exposed edge strip 32a. FIG. 5C shows a layer of protective material 42 superposed to the first layer of paper material 40 and a second layer of paper material 44 superposed to the layer of protective material 42 for providing two exposed edge strips 32a, 32b. FIG. 5D shows a layer of protective material 42 superposed to the first layer of paper material 40 and a second layer of protective material 45 superposed to the first layer of paper material 40 for providing two exposed edge strips 32a, 32b. On the other end, FIG. 5E shows a layer of protective material 42 superposed to the first layer of paper material 40 and a second layer of paper material 44 superposed to the layer of protective material 42 for providing only one exposed edge strip 32a. FIG. 5F shows a layer of protective material 42 superposed to the first layer of paper material 40 and a second layer of protective material 45 superposed to the first layer of paper material 40 for providing only one exposed edge strip 32a.

According to another embodiment, the layer of protective material and/or the second layer of protective material may be made of ethylene methacryalate (i.e., EMA), ethylene-vinyl acetate (i.e., EVA), polyurethane, polyethylene, polypropylene, high density polyethylene, and any other suitable protective material. The layer of protective material and the second layer of protective material can also be a multilayered material such as EMA/polyethylene, EVA/polyethylene, polyethylene/high density polyethylene and the like.

According to an embodiment, the first layer of paper material 40 and the second layer of paper material 44 are in the group consisting of, without limitation, any conventional type of flexible paper or cardboard, laminated paper, virgin Kraft paper, recycled paper, any combination, and the like.

According to an embodiment, and as shown on FIGS. 1, 3, 5A, 5C, 5D and 7, the protective wrapper 30 defines two edge strips 32a, 32b. Each one of the edge strips 32a, 32b is for being inwardly crimped against a respective inner roll header 34 at a corresponding one of the two ends 24, 25 of the roll 20. This contributes to the reduction of overlapped areas 38 (FIGS. 2 and 6) and crimp tunnels on the two ends 24, 25 formed because of the crimped edge strips 32a, 32b.

According to another embodiment and referring now to FIG. 3, it is shown that the protective wrapper 30 may further include an inner roll header 34 for covering at least partially at least one of the two ends 24, 25 of the roll 20.

According to another embodiment and referring now to FIG. 7, the protective wrapper 30 may further include an outer roll header 35 for covering at least partially the inner roll header 34 and the crimped edge strip 48 (FIGS. 2, 6 and 7) for providing protection against the elements at at least one of the two ends 24, 25 of the roll 20. It is to be noted that the protective wrapper 30 may only include one of the inner and outer roll headers 34, 35 at only one of the roll ends 24, 25.

According to another embodiment and still referring to FIGS. 3, 6 and 7, there is shown that at least one of the inner roll header 34 and the outer roll header 35 defines a disc-like shape. More particularly, the inner roll header 34 and the outer roll header 35 define a disc-like shape. The disc-like shape of the inner roll header 34 and the disc-like shape of the outer roll header 35 may define an equivalent disc-like shape. It is to be noted that the inner and outer roll headers 34, 35 may define any other suitable shape and/or configuration such as to receive the edge strips 32a and/or 32b or the protective wrapper 30.

According to another embodiment, there is shown that the protective wrapper 30 may further include a layer of heat sensitive material (not shown) coated to at least one of the inner roll header 34 and the outer roll header 35 for linking the at least one of the inner roll header 34 and the outer roll header 35 with the crimped edge strip 48. It is to be noted that the layer of heat sensitive material (not shown) has a surface area not exceeding another surface area defined by the ends 24, 25 of the roll 20.

According to another embodiment, the protective wrapper includes two outer roll headers 35 and two inner roll headers 34, one of each for each one of the two ends 24, 25 of the roll 20.

According to an embodiment, at least one of the outer roll header 35 and the inner roll header 34 further include adhesive properties for being linked with the crimped edge strip 48. The adhesive properties may be activated, without limitations, by heat, infrared, ultraviolet light, ultrasound, pressure, microwaves, radiowaves, X-rays, any combination, and the like.

According to another embodiment, a method for wrapping a roll 20 having two ends 24, 25 and a length L1 includes a step of installing an inner roll header 34 at at least one of the two ends 24 and/or 25 of the roll 20. The method may also include a step of wrapping the roll 20 with first layer of paper material 40 having a width W1 greater than the length L1 of the roll 20 and an edge strip 32a or 32b. Again, the edge strips 32a or 32b comprises one and only one layer of the paper material. It is to be mentioned that the first layer of paper material 40 is superposed to a layer of protective material 42 which has a width W2 not exceeding the length L1 of the roll 20. The method may also include the step of inwardly crimping the edge strip 32a or 32b against at least one of the two ends 24 or 25 of the roll 20 for contributing to the reduction of overlapped areas 38 and crimp tunnels on the at least one of the two ends 24 or 25.

According to an embodiment, the method may further include the step of installing an outer roll header 35 at at least one of the two ends 24, 25 of the roll 20 and on the crimped edge strip 48 for providing protection against the elements at at least one of the two ends 24 and/or 25 of the paper roll 20.

The edge strips 32a and 32b may be crimped using a crimping wheel which hammers the edge strips 32a and 32b onto the ends 24 and/or 25 of the roll 20. It will be appreciated that any other suitable technique can be used to crimp the extending edge strips 32a, 32b. Each of these edge strips 32a and 32b of the protective wrapper 30 overlap onto itself on the roll ends 24 during the crimping procedure. As the edge strips 32a and 32b are crimped over the roll ends 24, ridges 36 are produced and part of the protective wrapper 30 overlaps onto itself forming overlapped areas 38 (FIG. 2). Crimp tunnels (not shown) are defined between the overlapped areas 38 of protective wrapper 30. If not properly sealed, the crimp tunnels liquid infiltration towards the roll 20, causing damages to the later. Indeed, the outer roll header 35 is then secured to the roll ends 24 over the crimped edge strips 32a and 32b to complete the protection of the roll 20.

Referring now to FIG. 3, it will be seen another embodiment, where the roll 20 is wrapped into the protective wrapper 30. Either before or after the protective wrapper 30 has been applied to the roll 20, inner roll headers 34 have been juxtaposed to the roll ends 24. The edge strips 32a and 32b extend beyond the inner roll headers 34. The extending edge strip 32a and 32b are crimped over the inner roll headers 34. The protective wrapper 30 and the inner roll headers 34 form an integral part in the protection of the roll 20.

Additionally, the inner and outer roll headers 34, 35 may be made of, without limitation, linerboard corrugated cardboard, chipboard, or laminated Kraft paper, for example. The inner and outer roll headers 34, 35 can include adhesive properties on one face, or on both faces. Usually, the adhesive is found on the face in contact with the crimped edge strips 48. More particularly, the inner roll header 34 may be made of chipboard or of a corrugated cardboard. One the other hand, the outer roll header 35 may be made of a linerboard coated with a polyethylene (i.e., low density and/or high density) or coated with a polypropylene mixed with a low density polyethylene.

The layer of a heat sensitive material (not shown) may include, without limitations, EMA, EVA, polyurethane, polyethylene, polypropylene, high density polyethylene, and any other suitable heat sensitive material. The layer of a heat sensitive material (not shown) can also be a multilayered material such as EMA/polyethylene, EVA/polyethylene, polyethylene/high density polyethylene, and the like.

The layer of adhesive material (not shown) can be applied to the inner and outer roll headers 34, 35 by extrusion or water coating, solvent less coating, heating process (or 100% solid coating, spraying or any other suitable technique). It is to be mentioned that the inner and/or outer roll headers 34, 35 may have the same surface area than the surface area defined by the ends of the paper roll 20. For example, the roll 20, and the inner and/or outer roll header 34, 35 may have a diameter of 48 inches.

For protecting the roll 20 from external moisture, the atmosphere, and physical abrasions, the protective wrapper 30 can have moisture proof properties along its width W1. The layer of protective material 42 can be selected to provide the moisture proof properties to the protective wrapper 30. In that case, the layer of protective material 42 can cover the protective wrapper 30 along the entire length L1 of the roll 20.

Referring now to FIG. 6, it will be seen that once the roll 20 is wrapped in the protective wrapper 30, the edge strips 32a is crimped over inner roll headers 34, juxtaposed to the roll ends 24. As mentioned, crimping the edge strips 32a and 32b over the inner roll headers 34 reduces the overlapped areas and crimp tunnels on the protective wrapper 30, between the overlapped areas 38 since there is only one and only one layer of paper material 40 forming the edge strip 32a or 32b.

As for the previously described embodiments, when folded toward the roll ends 24, 25 the overlapped areas 38 of the protective wrapper 30 are in paper to adhesive contact with the inner and/or outer roll headers 34, 35, thereby providing improved barrier properties to elements of the external environment.

The adhesive properties of the inner and/or outer roll headers 34, can be activated by any suitable technique. For example, it can be activated by heat, infrared, ultraviolet light, ultrasound, pressure, microwaves, radiowaves, X-rays and any other suitable source to activate adhesives. As mentioned above, the inner and outer roll headers 34, 35 can be placed on one end 24 or 25, or on both ends 24 and 25 of the roll 20.

The temperature for the activation of the layer of heat sensitive material (not shown), the pressure applied, and the time required to obtain bonds depend on the nature of the adhesive material and the paper material used. For example, without being limitative, the temperature can vary between 325-450° F., the pressing time can vary between 1-40 seconds, and the heating time can vary between 5-60 seconds.

The roll ends 24, 25 along the lengths of the crimped edge strips 48, of the wrapped rolls 20 obtained with the protective wrapper 30 described above is watertight. This prevents liquid infiltration along the crimped edge strips 48.

The roll 20 can be any type of rolled paper including coated printing paper. However, it will appreciate that the above described protective wrapper 30 can be applied to any rolled material that needs to be wrapped and protected from liquids and/or moisture infiltration.

The protective wrapper 30 can be manufactured on existing roll wrap extruders, laminators, extruders and coater-laminators and can be applied to the roll 20 with existing roll wrapping equipment.

It will be appreciate that the roll 20 can be wrapped one turn or more by the protective wrapper 30, depending upon the physical properties of the protective wrapper 30. In an embodiment, only one edge strip 32a or 32b is crimped over an end 24 or 25 of the roll, the end 24 or 25 on which the corresponding edge strip 32a or 32b is crimped may be the one in contact with the floor during storage and transport.

The embodiments described above are intended to be exemplary only. Several alternatives are possible. For example, it is possible to wrap the roll 20 without using one of or both inner and outer roll headers 34, 35. The protective wrapper 30 could be used to protect various moisture sensitive articles not only paper rolls 20.

While preferred embodiments have been described above and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it will be evident to those skilled in the art that modifications may be made without departing from this disclosure. Such modifications are considered as possible variants comprised in the scope of the disclosure.

Claims

1. A protective wrapper for a roll having two ends and a length defining a distance between the two ends, the protective wrapper comprising:

a first layer of paper material having two opposed edges and an edge strip at at least one of the two opposed edges of the first layer of paper material, the edge strip comprises one and only one layer of the paper material and the edge strip is for being inwardly crimped against one of the two ends; and
a layer of protective material superposed to the first layer of paper material, the layer of protective material not overlapping the edge strip;
wherein the layer of paper material has a width greater than the distance between the two ends of the roll.

2. The protective wrapper of claim 1, wherein the layer of protective material comprises ethylene methacryalate, ethylene-vinyl acetate, polyurethane, polyethylene, polypropylene, high density polyethylene and any combination thereof.

3. The protective wrapper of claim 1, further comprising a second layer of paper material superposed to at least one of: the first layer of paper material and the layer of protective material, the second layer of paper material not overlapping the edge strip.

4. The protective wrapper of claim 3, wherein the second layer of paper material is superposed to the layer of protective material, such that the layer of protective material is not exposed.

5. The protective wrapper of claim 1, wherein the layer of protective material is superposed to a side of the first layer of paper material and wherein the protective wrapper further comprises a second layer of protective material superposed to another side of the first layer of paper material, the second layer of protective material not overlapping the edge strip.

6. The protective wrapper of claim 3, wherein at least one of: the first layer of paper material and the second layer of paper material includes a material in the group consisting of: a conventional type of flexible paper, a flexible type of flexible cardboard, a linerboard, a laminated paper, a virgin Kraft paper, a recycled paper or a combination thereof.

7. The protective wrapper of claim 1, wherein the edge strip comprises two edge strips, each one of the two edge strips is for being inwardly crimped against a corresponding one of the two ends of the roll.

8. The protective wrapper of claim 7, further comprising two inner roll headers installed at each one of the two ends of the roll and wherein the two edge strips are for being inwardly crimped against the two inner roll headers.

9. The protective wrapper of claim 1, further comprising an outer roll header for covering at least partially at least one of the two ends and the crimped edge strip, thereby providing protection against the elements at at least one of the two ends of the roll.

10. The protective wrapper of claim 1, further comprising an inner roll header to be installed at at least one of the two ends of the roll and wherein the edge strip is for being inwardly crimped against the inner roll header.

11. The protective wrapper of claim 10, wherein the inner roll header covers at least partially at least one of the two ends of the roll.

12. The protective wrapper of claim 10, wherein the inner roll header defines a disc-like shape.

13. The protective wrapper of claim 9, wherein the outer roll header defines a disc-like shape

14. The protective wrapper of claim 13, wherein the inner roll header defines a disc-like shape and wherein the disc-like shape of the inner roll header and the disc-like shape of the outer roll header define an equivalent disc-like shape.

15. The protective wrapper of claim 14, further comprising a layer of heat sensitive material coated to at least one of: the inner roll header and the outer roll header for linking the at least one of: the inner roll header and the outer roll header with the crimped edge strip, the layer of heat sensitive material having a surface area not exceeding another surface area of the ends of the roll.

16. The protective wrapper of claim 9, wherein the outer roll header comprises two outer roll headers and the inner roll header comprises two inner roll headers, one of each for each one of the two ends of the roll.

17. The protective wrapper of claim 9, wherein at least one of: the outer roll header and the inner roll header further comprises adhesive properties for being linked with the crimped edge strip and wherein the adhesive properties are activated by heat, infrared, ultraviolet light, ultrasound, pressure, microwaves, radiowaves, X-rays or any combination thereof.

18. A protective wrapper for a roll having two ends and a length defining a distance between the two ends, the protective wrapper comprising:

an inner roll header to be installed at at least one of the two ends;
a first layer of paper material having two opposed edges and an edge strip at at least one of the two opposed edges of the first layer of paper material, the edge strip comprises one and only one layer of the paper material and the edge strip is for being inwardly crimped against the inner roll header;
a layer of protective material superposed to the first layer of paper material, the layer of protective material not overlapping the edge strip; and
an outer roll header for covering at least partially the inner roll header and the crimped edge strip, thereby providing protection against the elements at at least one of the two ends of the roll;
wherein the first layer of paper material has a width greater than the distance between the two ends of the roll.

19. The protective wrapper of claim 18, wherein the edge strip comprises two edge strips, each one of the two edge strips is for being inwardly crimped against a respective inner roll header at a corresponding one of the two ends of the roll.

20. A method for wrapping a roll having two ends and a length defining a distance between the two ends, the method comprising the steps of:

installing an inner roll header at at least one of the two ends of the roll;
wrapping the roll with a first layer of paper material having a width greater than the length of the roll and an edge strip which comprises one and only one layer of the paper material, the first layer of paper material being superposed to a layer of protective material which has a width not exceeding the distance between the two ends of the roll; and
inwardly crimping the edge strip against at least one of the two ends of the roll for contributing to the reduction of overlapped areas and crimp tunnels on the at least one of the two ends.
