This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application Ser. No. 61/779,142 filed Mar. 13, 2013, the content of which is hereby incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.
TECHNICAL FIELDThe present invention relates generally to the field of slings for firearms, and more particularly to a modular and convertible tactical sling system for firearms.
BACKGROUNDSlings or shoulder straps are used for lifting and carrying items over the shoulder of a person and/or for hanging items on a support. For example, a sling comprising a strap of leather, nylon or other material is often affixed to a rifle, shotgun, muzzleloader or other type of long gun, for easier carrying in the field. Slings may also be used to steady a gun while aiming, for attachment of a rope to lift a gun to a tree-stand, and/or for various other purposes.
A flexible sling or strap is conventionally attached to a firearm by mounting attachments affixed near the front and rear of the firearm, which are coupled to connectors secured to each end of the sling or strap. Traditionally, the connectors of the sling or strap require cooperative engagement with the mounting attachments affixed to the firearm, which can require purchasing additional mounting attachments depending on the mounting attachments present on the firearm. Additionally, straps or slings typically only provide minimal length adjustment and limited convertibility, which can hinder the operation and functionality of the firearm in the field.
Tactical slings are typically configured for either a single-point or two-point attachment to a tactical weapon. For example, a single-point attachment may allow easier use of the weapon for shooting, climbing or reaching for a secondary weapon while holding the primary weapon in a ready and accessible position. Two-point sling attachments may be preferred for use when the user bends or crouches, or is applying handcuffs in law-enforcement applications. Known tactical slings also typically utilize a single connector type for attachment of the sling to a tactical weapon, commonly either a flush cup connector or an accessory clip connector. With typical known tactical sling systems, a user wishing to switch between a single-point and a two-point attachment, or between different types of connectors, generally will need to purchase a different type of sling, as a single-point sling typically is not compatible with two-point attachments (or vice-versa), and a flush cup sling typically is not compatible with an accessory clip connector (or vice-versa).
Continued improvements in the field are sought, and it has now been recognized that needs exist for an improved tactical sling system. It is to the provision of a modular convertible tactical sling system meeting these and other needs that the present invention is primarily directed.
