Scarf with Pockets and Hood
A scarf having pockets near the ends of the scarf wherein pockets are created by attaching patch pockets to the scarf near the ends of the scarf, or by folding the ends of the scarf and sewing the sides to create a pocket. A scarf having pockets and hood.
This patent application claims priority under 35 USC 119(e)(1) from U.S. Provisional Patent Application Ser. No. 62/129,709 filed Mar. 6, 2015, of common inventorship herewith entitled, “Scat, Handcrafted Scarf with Hood and Pockets,” which is incorporated herein by reference as though the same were set forth in its entirety.
FIELD OF THE INVENTIONThe present invention pertains to the field of outerwear clothing, and more specifically to the field of hood and scarf garments.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONThe prior art has put forth several designs for hood and scarf garments. Among these are:
US Patent 2011/0004971 to Farida Benderradji describes a hood and scarf garment developed to maintain the wearer's full front body, upper back, shoulders, full neck, ears, full head, and face insulated from cold weather. This garment is constructed with a long scarf whose strips of fabric are fastened together with buttons to provide full coverage of the wearer's body, much like a blanket. The flexibility of the garment allows a wearer to unfasten the strips of fabric and use them as a scarf to insulate their neck and shoulders. Constructed without a full back and any sleeves allows this garment to be folded flat and compact enough to fit inside a conventional purse or handbag when not in use. The hood is constructed with special curvatures that coincide with the shape of the wearer's head and neck so as to minimize any folding or wrinkling of the fabric.
U.S. Pat. No. 8,505,117 to David Y. Park describes a hood and scarf combination. The hood portion includes fasteners. The scarf portion includes one or more sets of fasteners disposed on the scarf portion to receive the hood fasteners along various positions along the scarf portion.
U.S. Pat. No. 1,399,523 to Isaac L. Sable describes a combined hood and scarf with the scarf member formed from a substantially rectangular blank. The hood member extends substantially from the scarf member at the middle portion and is adapted to be suspended therefrom at the back of the neck. The said hood member comprises a front panel, a rear panel and a seam at the side and top edges of said panels for securing said panels together, a seam about which said hood member is adapted to fold connecting said hood and scarf members together, an upturned reinforcing visor on said front panel integral with said front panel, and a seam at the upper edge of said visor for securing said upper edge to said front panel.
None of these prior art references describe the present invention.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONIt is an object of the present invention to provide a clothing line of stylishly functional handcrafted scarfs with hoods and pockets.
Inventions are always a product of vision and creativity whether they are world changing inventions like cars and computers or everyday conveniences like pump hairsprays, cordless tools and resealable soda bottles. New inventions like a cell phone change a person's life style, making communication more convenient and accessible virtually anywhere. Other inventions such as a snow scraper and brush combine two already existing inventions into an improved embodiment, reducing clutter in our lives and making a daily winter chores much easier. Often necessity combined with a little creativity is the underlying motivator for an invention. Most inventions fill a relatively small need or perform a specialized limited function. If that need is shared by a sufficient number of consumers, an invention has a great potential for success.
The present invention, hereinafter referred to as Scarf with Pockets and Hood, or Scat, is a clothing line of stylish handcrafted scarfs with hoods and pockets. The Scat is significantly wider than conventional scarves and also is equipped with ties, buttons or a zipper to function in the manner of a backless vest. The Scat is wearable under one's winter coat for optimal warmth or as an accessory over one's blouse, shirt, sweatshirt or sweater. The Scat is produced in a reversible style with a pair of pockets on each side and a different color or pattern on each side. Pockets with buttons or zippers are provided for storing a wearer's cellphone, iPod, MP3 player or smartphone.

Scarf 10 is an elongate rectangle and the pockets are placed at the ends of the scarf either by attaching patch pockets to the scarf near the ends of the scarf, or by folding the ends of the scarf and sewing the sides to create a pocket.
Produced in a variety of styles, colors, materials and sizes, the Scat provides both winter warmth and unique personal style to men, women and children. Children and infant versions of the Scat have hood accents such as bunny or cat ears. Adult versions have embroidered initials or appliqués.
For adults, the Scat is produced in small, medium and large sizes. The small adult size measures approximately thirty seven and one half inches in length and ten inches in width with its pockets measuring approximately six and one half inches in length by six and one half inches in width. The medium adult size measures approximately thirty eight and one half inches in length and ten inches in width with its pockets measuring approximately seven inches in length by seven inches in width. The large adult size measures approximately forty and one half inches in length and ten and one half inches in width with its pockets measuring approximately eight inches in length by eight inches in width.
For children and infants, the Scat is produced in a one size for all. The children's one size measures approximately thirty inches in length and nine inches in width with pockets measuring five and one half inches in length and five and one half inches in width. The infants' one size measures approximately twenty two inches in length and seven inches in width with small pockets being optional.
From the front view, the Scat looks like a hooded vest. The Scat is wearable as a light accessory on a cool day, keeping the wearer's neck, head, chest and hands toasty. When worn beneath a winter coat, the Scat outperforms a conventional scarf in providing more warmth, function and style. Creative, highly appealing and extremely functional, the Scat provides all ages and genders with a hood and scarf garment of exceptional versatility, warmth, fashion and convenience.
Although this invention has been described with respect to specific embodiments, it is not intended to be limited thereto and various modifications which will become apparent to the person of ordinary skill in the art are intended to fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as described herein taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and the appended claims.
Claims
1. A scarf having pockets comprising, an elongate rectangular scarf, wherein the rectangular scarf has two edges and two ends, further having pockets near the ends of the scarf wherein pockets are created by attaching patch pockets to the scarf near the ends of the scarf, or by folding the ends of the scarf and sewing the sides to create a pocket.
2. The scarf of claim 1 further comprising a front closure to attach one edge of the scarf to the second edge of the scarf.
3. The scarf of claim 2, wherein the closure is selected from the group consisting of a round button, toggle button, snap and hook and loop fastener.
4. The scarf of claim 1, further comprising a closure on the top edge of at least one pocket.
5. The scarf of claim 4, wherein the closure is selected from the group consisting of hook and loop fastener, zipper, button and snap.
6. The scarf of claim 1 further comprising a hood attached to the middle of'one edge of the scarf.
7. The scarf of claim 6 wherein the hood is lined with soft material such as fleece or fur.
8. The scarf of claim 6, further comprising a front closure to attach one edge of the scarf to the second edge of the scarf, wherein the closure is a round button, toggle button, snap or hook and loop fastener.
9. The scarf of claim 6, further comprising at least one closure on the top edge of at least one pocket wherein the closure is hook and loop fastener or a zipper or button or snap.
10. The scarf of claim 6, further comprising ornamentation on the hood, such as cat ears or bunny ears.
11. The scarf of claim 1 produced in a variety of styles, colors, materials and sizes and ornamentation.
12. The scarf of claim 6 produced in a variety of styles, colors, materials and sizes and ornamentation.
