BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the Invention

The present invention relates to disposable lids for use with beverage containers to improve hygiene. More particularly, the invention relates to disposable lids that cover the top of a beverage container and allow a person to drink out of the container without placing his or her lips on the container itself.

Description of the Related Art

As society becomes more conscious of and concerned with good hygiene, many products have become available to minimize a person's contact with un-sanitized or unhygienic materials. Liquid hand sanitizer, once restricted the hospitals, is now commonplace at many public places, such as sports events in theaters. Grocery stores often provide sanitizing wipes to clean the handles of grocery carts. Straws are almost always not provided individually wrapped. Restaurants serve drinks with straws still having the upper part of the wrapper covering them.

Beverage containers, such as 12 ounce soda cans, or an extremely efficient way of providing individual drinks without requiring classes or cups. However, soda cans usually travel substantially before reaching the hands of a person consuming the liquid inside. They are often handled by several people and exposed to a wide variety of environments. In the past, this has gone unnoticed. However, studies of shown that the top of a soda can is usually contaminated with a wide variety of undesirable materials, including dirt and germs. Pouring the contents of a can into a glass can reduce a person's exposure to material on the top of the can. Cans can also be rinsed prior to use. However, this is impractical in many common situations, such as picnicking, camping and attending sports events.

The above-described deficiencies of today's systems are merely intended to provide an overview of some of the problems of conventional systems, and are not intended to be exhaustive. Other problems with the state of the art and corresponding benefits of some of the various non-limiting embodiments may become further apparent upon review of the following detailed description.

In view of the foregoing, it is desirable to provide a device for improving the hygiene of consuming a liquid from a disposable can or other beverage container.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and to the arrangements of the components set forth in the following description or illustrated in the drawings. The invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced and carried out in various ways. Also, it is to be understood that the phraseology and terminology employed herein are for the purpose of description and should not be regarded as limiting.

The disclosed subject matter is described with reference to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals are used to refer to like elements throughout. In the following description, for purposes of explanation, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the various embodiments of the subject disclosure. It may be evident, however, that the disclosed subject matter may be practiced without these specific details. In other instances, well-known structures and devices are shown in block diagram form in order to facilitate describing the various embodiments herein.

In addition, the term “or” is intended to mean an inclusive “or” rather than an exclusive “or.” That is, unless specified otherwise, or clear from context, “X employs A or B” is intended to mean any of the natural inclusive permutations. That is, if X employs A; X employs B; or X employs both A and B, then “X employs A or B” is satisfied under any of the foregoing instances. Moreover, articles “a” and “an” as used in the subject specification and annexed drawings should generally be construed to mean “one or more” unless specified otherwise or clear from context to be directed to a singular form.

Disclosed is a disposable container lid that snaps over the top of a typical aluminum can containing potable liquids. The embodiments disclosed below are described generally in reference to a common 12 ounce or 16 ounce aluminum can. However, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the invention is readily adapted to other containers and that aluminum cans or other containers may include soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, fruit juices, water or a variety of other potable liquids. The container lids of the invention are typically described as disposable. However, the lids may also be cleaned and reused if desired. The lids may be relatively thick and relatively rigid or may be relatively thin, having a construction similar to disposable lids commonly used at convenience stores and fast food restaurants. The lids may be stackable or may come individually wrapped. Optionally, the lids may include ornamentation, such as for example a brand name or logo, and may come in a variety of colors. Optionally, the lids may be fabricated as a single, unitary piece, or may optionally be constructed from separate components. It may also be desirable to fabricate lids using a lamination process, and extrusion process or die casting.

FIGS. 1-4 show an embodiment of a disposable container lid 10 in accordance with the principles of the invention. The lid 10 includes a circular, planar cover 12 having an oblong opening 14 and an annular peripheral ridge 16 along its periphery. In this embodiment, except for the opening 14, the circular, planar cover 12 is continuous, that is having no other openings. The upper surface of the peripheral ridge 16 is curved, but may optionally be flat or angular. The front side 24 of the lid 10, which is the direction from which the contents of the container are dispensed, has a bib 26 extending downward from the side of the annular peripheral ridge 16. Two slots 28 are positioned on either side of the bib 20. The oblong opening 14 includes a downward lip 30 that protrudes downward along the front edge 32 of the opening 14. The opening 14 is also sized to allow a pop-top or pull-tab mechanism to protrude through it when the lid 10 is attached to a can. The opening 14 of this embodiment includes a curved front edge 32 and a parabolically curved back edge 34. Optionally, the opening 14 may have any configuration, such as for example a polygonal shape. Optionally, the parabolic curve defined by the back edge 34 may have a focal point at the center of the circle defined by the annular peripheral ridge 16.

As may be seen in FIGS. 2 and 4, a groove 18 is located on a bottom side 15 of the lid 10. The groove 18 is directly underneath and extends into the annular peripheral ridge 16. The groove 18 is defined by an outer wall 20 and an inner wall 22 of the peripheral ridge 16. FIG. 4 shows the bottom edge 21 of the outer wall 20 includes a small interior lip 38 which partially extends inward, into the opening into the groove 18. This interior lip 38 allows the lid 10 to engage the protruding rim of a soda can and snap into place over the top of the soda can. The interior lip 38 on the outer wall 20 may be coextensive with the outer wall 20 or may optionally only extend along one or more portions of the outer wall 20. In this embodiment, the lip 38 extends around along the entire outer wall 20, except for the region on the front side 24 of the lid 10 between the two slots 28 on either side of the bib 26.

FIGS. 5 and 6 show the lid 10 affixed to the top of a typical soda can 50. The opening 14 in the cover 12 is large enough to provide access to both the aperture 52 and the pull tab 54 located on the top 56 of the soda can 50, when the lid 10 is affixed to the can 50. The lip 30 extends into the aperture 52 and abuts against the front edge 33 of the aperture 52. The bib 26 extends over the front side 58 of the can 50, covering the region of the can typically contacted by an operator's lips when drinking.

In use, the disposable lid 10 may be placed over a soda can 50 before the can is opened. The planar body 12 is configured such that it lies substantially flush with the top 56 of a soda can when the peripheral annular ridge 62 of the can 50 has been snapped into the groove 18. The lip 30 is configured to lie substantially flush with the front boundary of the aperture 52 of the soda can. Because there is nothing blocking the path of the pull tab 54, the lid 10 may be affixed to a soda can prior to the soda can being opened. For this reason, the opening 14 is a single, large opening. The bib 26 prevents a drinker's lower lip from coming in the contact with the can.

Once the lid 10 is secured in place, the pull tab 54 may be used to open the aperture 52. As soon as the aperture 52 is opened, the lip 30 extends through the aperture 52. When a person drinks from the can, his or her lips will typically contact the bib 26, the cover 12 and the annular ridge 16, but will not come into contact with the top 56 of the can 50. Substantially all of the liquid poured from the can will come into contact with the lip 30, while only a very small portion of the liquid will come in to contact with the top 56 of the can 50.

FIGS. 7-11 show an alternative embodiment of a disposable container lid 80 in accordance with the principles of the invention. Container lid 80 includes a circular, planar cover 82, an oblong opening 84 and an annular peripheral ridge 86 extending about the cover's 82 periphery. These features are similar to the cover 12, opening 14 and annular ridge 16 found in the lid 10 shown in FIGS. 1-6. The oblong opening 84 is sized to provide access to both a pull tab and an aperture in the top of a soda can. The disposable container lid 80 similarly includes a groove 88 defined by an inner wall 90 and an outer wall 92. The outer wall 92 also includes an inward facing interior lip 94 and two slots 96 extending from the bottom to the top of the outer wall 92. The slots 96 provide flexibility for the outer wall 92 in order to allow the lid 82 to more easily engage and snap onto the top of a can. Disposable container lid 80 includes a tab 98 extending from the backside 100 of the lid 80. The tab 98 extends perpendicularly outward from the outer wall 92. The tab 98 may be used to remove the lid 80 from a can more easily and may optionally be used to assist in opening the can by serving as a lever to place underneath the pop-top.

The opening 84 includes a lip 104 that extends downward so that it lies flush against the front side of an aperture in a soda can. Thus, it functions in the same way as the lip 30 shown in FIGS. 1-6. However, the lid 80 includes a feature not found in FIGS. 1-6. Specifically, the disposable container lid 80 includes a spout 110 extending upward on the front of the opening 84. The spout 110 has a generally curved shape and guides liquids dispensed from the container in the desired direction. In use, the lower lip of a person who is drinking through the lid 80 will come into contact only with the front side 114 of the spout 110. The front side 114 of the spout 110 is contiguous and flush with the protective lip 104. The upper lip of the person will extend over the back side 116 of the spout 110. Thus, a person drinking through the lid 80 will not come into direct contact with the top of a can. Similarly, the contents of the can will come into little or no contact with the top of the can because they will flow over the lip 104 and across the back side 116 of the spout 110.

FIGS. 12-14 show another alternative embodiment of a disposable container lid 120 in accordance with the principles of the invention. Container lid 120 includes a circular, planar cover 122, an oblong opening 124 and an annular peripheral ridge 126 extending about the cover's 122 periphery. These features are similar to the cover 12, opening 14 and annular ridge 16 found in the lid 10 shown in FIGS. 1-6. This embodiment of a container lid 120 also includes a shallow annular channel 123 around the outside of the cover 122 adjacent to the peripheral ridge 126. The oblong opening 124 is sized to provide access to both a pull tab and an aperture in the top of a soda can. The disposable container lid 120 also includes a groove 128 underneath the annular ridge 126, and defined by an inner wall 130 and an outer wall 132. The outer wall 132 also includes an inward facing lip 134 and two slots 136. The slots 136 provide flexibility for the outer wall 132 in order to allow the lid 122 snap onto the top of a can more easily. Disposable container lid 120 includes a tab 138 extending from the backside 140 of the lid 120. The tab 138 extends downward from the outer wall 132. The tab 138 may be used to remove the lid 120 from a can more easily. A lip 144 extends downward from the front edge of the opening 124. The disposable lid 120 also includes an annular channel adjacent to the annular Ridge 126 along the periphery of the circular cover 122. The container lid 120 has neither a spout more a downward tab on its front side.

FIGS. 15-22 show another alternative embodiment of a disposable container lid, a disposable lid 160 in accordance with principles of the invention. FIGS. 19, 21 and 23 show the disposable lid 160 removably affixed to a soda can 200 in accordance with principles of the invention. The disposable container lid 160 includes a circular cover 162 that is substantially planar and continuous except for opening 163. As with other embodiments, and annular peripheral ridge 164 extends around the periphery of the cover 162. Peripheral ridge 164 includes a flattened top 166 extending between an outer wall 168 and an inner wall 170. The outer wall 168, inner wall 170 and top surface 166 together form a groove 172 on the bottom surface 174 of the lid 160 sized to snap on to the rim 204 of a typical soda can 200. The disposable container lid 160 includes a front side 176, which an operator presses to his or her lips in order to drink from a soda can 200 as described in more detail below.

The front 176 includes a bib 178 extending from the bottom 180 of the outer wall 168 of the peripheral ridge 164. The bib 178 extends downward from the outer wall 168 at an angle and is curved and lies substantially flush against the upper front region 202 of a soda can 200 upon which the disposable container lid 160 has been removably attached. In use, the bib 178 covers the upper front region 202 of the soda can 200 that would otherwise be contacted by the lower lip of an operator. The outer wall 168 also includes four slots 180 extending from the bottom 180 of the outer wall 168 to the top 166 of the peripheral ridge 164. Inside the groove 172, the outer wall 168 includes a plurality of angled teeth 182 tapering upward from the bottom 180 of the outer wall 168 into the groove 172. When the lid 160 engages a soda can 200, the angled teeth 182 snap over the rim 204 of a soda can 200, thereby holding the lid 160 in place. The angled teeth 182 serve the same purpose as the interior lip 38 shown in FIG. 4. The use of teeth 182 rather than a continuous lip allows the disposable lid to be manufactured using less material. Generally, the teeth and the interior lip may be interchanged among embodiments. The outer wall 168 also includes one or more slots 185 extending from the bottom 180 of the outer wall 168 to the upper surface 166 of the peripheral ridge 164. The slots 185 provide flexibility to the outer wall 168.

Referring to FIGS. 19-22, the opening 163 of disposable container lid 160 has a more complex shape than the openings of other embodiments. The shape of the opening 163 minimizes exposure to the top surface of a soda can 200. The opening 163 has an oval front region 184, a substantially rectangular central region 186 and a semicircular back region 188. The rectangular central region 186 and the semicircular back region 188 are configured to be slightly larger than the area of the pop-top actuating tab 206 on the top surface 208 of a soda can 200. The oval front region 184 is sized and positioned to align with the aperture 210 on the top 208 the soda can 200 to which it is attached. A downward lip 190 extends downward from edge of the entire front region 184 of the opening 163, so that the downward lip 190 extends into the aperture 210 of a soda can 200 to which it is attached. The downward lip 190 has an outer surface 191 that lies flush with, i.e. abuts against, the side edges 212 and front edge 214 of the soda can aperture 210, leaving only exposed the back edge 216 of the aperture 210 covered by the actuating tab 206. This design minimizes exposure to the top 208 of the soda can 200 and prevents contact between liquid exiting the can 200 and the top surface 208, underneath the cover 162. The downward lip 190 of disposable container lid 160 extends further downward than the outer wall 168, and optionally extends a distance downward from the cover 162 equal to a distance upward that the inner wall 170 extends from the cover 162. The downward lip 190 is configured to lie flush against the edge of the aperture of the soda can aperture. I.e., the outside surface 192 of the downward lip 190 abuts against the edge of the aperture of the soda can 200.

Whereas, the present invention has been described in relation to the drawings attached hereto, other and further modifications, apart from those shown or suggested herein, may be made within the spirit and scope of this invention. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that the conception, upon which this disclosure is based, may readily be utilized as a basis for the designing of other structures, methods and systems for carrying out the several purposes of the present invention. Descriptions of the embodiments shown in the drawings should not be construed as limiting or defining the ordinary and plain meanings of the terms of the claims unless such is explicitly indicated. The claims should be regarded as including such equivalent constructions insofar as they do not depart from the spirit and scope of the present invention.
