Convex Grind Method for Grinding Knife

A convex grind method for grinding a knife includes preparing a grinding tool, first angle grinding, second angle grinding, third angle grinding and polishing. The grinding tool includes an actuator, a grinding member detachably mounted on the actuator, and two guide blocks disposed at two opposite sides of the grinding member. The grinding member has two conical grinding faces, and each of the two guide blocks is formed with a guide face disposed at a vertical state and located above each of the two conic grinding faces of the grinding member. The grinding tool performs the first angle grinding, the second angle grinding and the third angle grinding to abrade the blade of a knife. Then, the blade of the knife is polished to finish the grinding process so as to form a convex grind knife.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention

The present invention relates to a grinding method and, more particularly, to a convex grind method for grinding a knife to form a convex grind knife.

2. Description of the Related Art

A convex grind method is used for grinding a knife to form a convex grind knife having a blade with two convex faces. A conventional convex grind method comprises using sand paper or a sand belt machine to grind the knife. However, it is difficult to control the grinding force or angle of the conventional convex grind method, thereby causing inconvenience to the operator, and thereby decreasing the grinding quality of the product of the convex grind knife. In addition, the conventional convex grind method only trims the edges and corners and cannot form the determined curved angles.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a convex grind method for grinding a knife, comprising a first step of preparing a grinding tool, a second step of first angle grinding, a third step of second angle grinding, a fourth step of third angle grinding, and a fifth step of polishing. The first step includes preparing a grinding tool which includes an actuator, a grinding member detachably mounted on the actuator, and two guide blocks disposed at two opposite sides of the grinding member, wherein the grinding member has two conical grinding faces, each of the two guide blocks is formed with a guide face disposed at a vertical state and located above each of the two conic grinding faces of the grinding member, a clearance is defined between each of the two guide blocks and each of the two grinding faces of the grinding member, and a distance is defined between a bottom of the guide face of each of the two guide blocks and each of the two grinding faces of the grinding member and is ranged between 0.9 mm and 1.1 mm. The second step includes arranging each of the two grinding faces of the grinding member at a first grinding angle ranged between 22° and 28°; mounting the grinding member on the actuator; starting the actuator; driving a first face of a knife to abut the guide face of one of the two guide blocks; moving the knife vertically downward until a blade of the knife contacts one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member; slightly rubbing the blade of the knife on one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member by one time to two times; driving a second face of the knife to abut the guide face of the other one of the two guide blocks; moving the knife vertically downward until the blade of the knife contacts the other one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member; and slightly rubbing the blade of the knife on the other one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member by one time to two times. The third step includes arranging each of the two grinding faces of the grinding member at a second grinding angle ranged between 12° and 18°; mounting the grinding member on the actuator; starting the actuator; driving the first face of the knife to abut the guide face of one of the two guide blocks; moving the knife vertically downward until the blade of the knife contacts one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member; slightly rubbing the blade of the knife on one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member by one time to two times; driving the second face of the knife to abut the guide face of the other one of the two guide blocks; moving the knife vertically downward until the blade of the knife contacts the other one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member; and slightly rubbing the blade of the knife on the other one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member by one time to two times. The fourth step includes arranging each of the two grinding faces of the grinding member at a third grinding angle ranged between 3° and 7°; mounting the grinding member on the actuator; starting the actuator; driving the first face of the knife to abut the guide face of one of the two guide blocks; moving the knife vertically downward until the blade of the knife contacts one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member; slightly rubbing the blade of the knife on one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member by one time to two times; driving the second face of the knife to abut the guide face of the other one of the two guide blocks; moving the knife vertically downward until the blade of the knife contacts the other one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member; and slightly rubbing the blade of the knife on the other one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member by one time to two times. The fifth step includes polishing the blade of the knife.

According to the primary advantage of the present invention, the guide face of each of the two guide blocks guides movement of the knife to facilitate each of the two grinding faces of the grinding member abrading the blade of the knife.

According to another advantage of the present invention, the knife has precise grinding position and angle by aid of the guide face of each of the two guide blocks to enhance the grinding quality of the convex grind knife.

According to a further advantage of the present invention, movement of the knife is guided by the guide face of each of the two guide blocks to enhance safety of the grinding operation.

According to a further advantage of the present invention, the convex grind method has a high stability and is operated easily and conveniently.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Referring to the drawings and initially to FIG. 1, a convex grind method for grinding a knife in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the present invention comprises a first step 1 of preparing a grinding tool, a second step 2 of first angle grinding, a third step 3 of second angle grinding, a fourth step 4 of third angle grinding, and a fifth step 5 of polishing.

Referring to FIGS. 2 and 2A with reference to FIG. 1, the first step 1 includes preparing a grinding tool which includes an actuator 11, a grinding member 12 detachably mounted on the actuator 11, and two guide blocks 13 disposed at two opposite sides of the grinding member 12, wherein the grinding member 12 has two conical grinding faces 121, each of the two guide blocks 13 is formed with a guide face 14 disposed at a vertical state and located above each of the two conic grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12, a clearance “A” is defined between each of the two guide blocks 13 and each of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12, and a distance “D” is defined between a bottom of the guide face 14 of each of the two guide blocks 13 and each of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12 and is ranged between 0.9 mm and 1.1 mm.

Referring to FIGS. 3 and 4 with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2, the second step 2 includes:

arranging each of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12 at a first grinding angle ranged between 22° and 28°;

mounting the grinding member 12 on the actuator 11;

starting the actuator 11;

driving a first face of a knife 6 to abut the guide face 14 of one of the two guide blocks 13;

moving the knife 6 vertically downward until a blade 61 of the knife 6 contacts one of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12;

slightly rubbing the blade 61 of the knife 6 on one of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12 by one time to two times;

driving a second face of the knife 6 to abut the guide face 14 of the other one of the two guide blocks 13;

moving the knife 6 vertically downward until the blade 61 of the knife 6 contacts the other one of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12; and

slightly rubbing the blade 61 of the knife 6 on the other one of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12 by one time to two times.

Referring to FIGS. 5 and 6 with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2, the third step 3 includes:

arranging each of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12 at a second grinding angle ranged between 12° and 18°;

mounting the grinding member 12 on the actuator 11;

starting the actuator 11;

driving the first face of the knife 6 to abut the guide face 14 of one of the two guide blocks 13;

moving the knife 6 vertically downward until the blade 61 of the knife 6 contacts one of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12;

slightly rubbing the blade 61 of the knife 6 on one of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12 by one time to two times;

driving the second face of the knife 6 to abut the guide face 14 of the other one of the two guide blocks 13;

moving the knife 6 vertically downward until the blade 61 of the knife 6 contacts the other one of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12; and

slightly rubbing the blade 61 of the knife 6 on the other one of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12 by one time to two times.

Referring to FIGS. 7 and 8 with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2, the fourth step 4 includes:

arranging each of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12 at a third grinding angle ranged between 3° and 7°;

mounting the grinding member 12 on the actuator 11;

starting the actuator 11;

driving the first face of the knife 6 to abut the guide face 14 of one of the two guide blocks 13;

moving the knife 6 vertically downward until the blade 61 of the knife 6 contacts one of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12;

slightly rubbing the blade 61 of the knife 6 on one of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12 by one time to two times;

driving the second face of the knife 6 to abut the guide face 14 of the other one of the two guide blocks 13;

moving the knife 6 vertically downward until the blade 61 of the knife 6 contacts the other one of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12; and

slightly rubbing the blade 61 of the knife 6 on the other one of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12 by one time to two times.

As shown in FIG. 9, the fifth step 5 includes polishing the blade 61 of the knife 6. Thus, the grinding process is finished.

As shown in FIG. 10, after the blade 61 of the knife 6 is polished, the blade 61 of the knife 6 has a smooth surface to form a final product of a convex grind knife.

In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, each of the first grinding angle, the second grinding angle and the third grinding angle is an angle defined between each of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12 and the guide face 14 of each of the two guide blocks 13.

In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the two guide blocks 13 are mounted on a base 15 to facilitate detachment and replacement of the grinding member 12, and the grinding member 12 extends through the base 15 and is combined with the actuator 11.

In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the guide face 14 of each of the two guide blocks 13 extends in an axis which intersects a central position of each of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12. In addition, the distance “D” is the shortest distance between the guide face 14 of each of the two guide blocks 13 and the central position of each of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12. Preferably, the distance “D” has an optimum value of 1 mm, the first grinding angle has an optimum value of 25°, the second grinding angle has an optimum value of 15°, and the third grinding angle has an optimum value of 5°.

Accordingly, the guide face 14 of each of the two guide blocks 13 guides movement of the knife 6 to facilitate each of the two grinding faces 121 of the grinding member 12 abrading the blade 61 of the knife 6. In addition, the knife 6 has precise grinding position and angle by aid of the guide face 14 of each of the two guide blocks 13 to enhance the grinding quality of the convex grind knife. Further, movement of the knife 6 is guided by the guide face 14 of each of the two guide blocks 13 to enhance safety of the grinding operation. Further, the convex grind method has a high stability and is operated easily and conveniently.

Although the invention has been explained in relation to its preferred embodiment(s) as mentioned above, it is to be understood that many other possible modifications and variations can be made without departing from the scope of the present invention. It is, therefore, contemplated that the appended claim or claims will cover such modifications and variations that fall within the true scope of the invention.

Claims

1. A convex grind method for grinding a knife, comprising:

a first step of preparing a grinding tool;
a second step of first angle grinding;
a third step of second angle grinding;
a fourth step of third angle grinding; and
a fifth step of polishing;
wherein:
the first step includes preparing a grinding tool which includes an actuator, a grinding member detachably mounted on the actuator, and two guide blocks disposed at two opposite sides of the grinding member, wherein the grinding member has two conical grinding faces, each of the two guide blocks is formed with a guide face disposed at a vertical state and located above each of the two conic grinding faces of the grinding member, a clearance is defined between each of the two guide blocks and each of the two grinding faces of the grinding member, and a distance is defined between a bottom of the guide face of each of the two guide blocks and each of the two grinding faces of the grinding member and is ranged between 0.9 mm and 1.1 mm;
the second step includes:
arranging each of the two grinding faces of the grinding member at a first grinding angle ranged between 22° and 28°;
mounting the grinding member on the actuator;
starting the actuator;
driving a first face of a knife to abut the guide face of one of the two guide blocks;
moving the knife vertically downward until a blade of the knife contacts one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member;
slightly rubbing the blade of the knife on one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member by one time to two times;
driving a second face of the knife to abut the guide face of the other one of the two guide blocks;
moving the knife vertically downward until the blade of the knife contacts the other one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member; and
slightly rubbing the blade of the knife on the other one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member by one time to two times.
the third step includes:
arranging each of the two grinding faces of the grinding member at a second grinding angle ranged between 12° and 18°;
mounting the grinding member on the actuator;
starting the actuator;
driving the first face of the knife to abut the guide face of one of the two guide blocks;
moving the knife vertically downward until the blade of the knife contacts one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member;
slightly rubbing the blade of the knife on one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member by one time to two times;
driving the second face of the knife to abut the guide face of the other one of the two guide blocks;
moving the knife vertically downward until the blade of the knife contacts the other one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member; and
slightly rubbing the blade of the knife on the other one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member by one time to two times.
the fourth step includes:
arranging each of the two grinding faces of the grinding member at a third grinding angle ranged between 3° and V;
mounting the grinding member on the actuator;
starting the actuator;
driving the first face of the knife to abut the guide face of one of the two guide blocks;
moving the knife vertically downward until the blade of the knife contacts one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member;
slightly rubbing the blade of the knife on one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member by one time to two times;
driving the second face of the knife to abut the guide face of the other one of the two guide blocks;
moving the knife vertically downward until the blade of the knife contacts the other one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member; and
slightly rubbing the blade of the knife on the other one of the two grinding faces of the grinding member by one time to two times; and
the fifth step includes polishing the blade of the knife.

2. The convex grind method of claim 1, wherein the two guide blocks are mounted on a base, and the grinding member extends through the base and is combined with the actuator.

3. The convex grind method of claim 1, wherein:

the guide face of each of the two guide blocks extends in an axis which intersects a central position of each of the two grinding faces of the grinding member; and
the distance is the shortest distance between the guide face of each of the two guide blocks and the central position of each of the two grinding faces of the grinding member.

4. The convex grind method of claim 1, wherein the distance has an optimum value of 1 mm.

5. The convex grind method of claim 1, wherein the first grinding angle has an optimum value of 25°.

6. The convex grind method of claim 1, wherein the second grinding angle has an optimum value of 15°.

7. The convex grind method of claim 1, wherein the third grinding angle has an optimum value of 5°.

8. The convex grind method of claim 1, wherein each of the first grinding angle, the second grinding angle and the third grinding angle is an angle defined between each of the two grinding faces of the grinding member and the guide face of each of the two guide blocks.
