DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Reference is made herein to the attached drawings. Like reference numerals are used throughout the drawings to depict like or similar elements of the ventilated adjustable firmness mattress. The figures are intended for representative purposes only and should not be considered to be limiting in any respect.

Referring now to FIG. 1 and FIG. 2, there is shown an expanded view of an embodiment of the ventilated adjustable firmness bed without the cover and a perspective view of an embodiment of the ventilated adjustable firmness bed with the cover, respectively. A ventilated adjustable firmness bed 11 comprises a multilayered mattress 12 and a uniform mattress 16, each comprising a separate and differing firmness. In the shown embodiment, the multilayered mattress 12 and uniform mattress 16 do not have the same height, however in other embodiments the height of the multilayered mattress 12 is equivalent to the height of the uniform mattress 16. In the shown embodiment, the length and width of the multilayered mattress 12 is equivalent to the length and width of the uniform mattress 16.

The multilayered mattress 12 comprises one or more layers. In the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 2, the multilayered mattress 12 comprises a first layer 13 and a second layer 14, wherein each layer comprises a separate firmness that is additionally separate from the firmness of the uniform mattress 16, such that there are three variations of firmness. Each layer extends the full length of the multilayered mattress 12, such that each layer is disposed flush against one another. In the illustrated embodiment, the first layer 13 comprises the same height as the second layer 14, such that each layer comprises the same portion of the multilayered mattress 12, thereby allowing a user to swap the first layer 13 with the second layer 14 without concern that first layer 13 may wear out faster than the second layer 14. However, in other embodiments, the first layer 13 comprises more than fifty percent of the height of the multilayered mattress 12, such that the first layer 13 is sturdier than the second layer 14, thereby preventing the first layer 13 from wearing out due to overuse should the user prefer the firmness of the first layer 13. In another embodiment, the second layer 14 comprises more than fifty percent of the height of the multilayered mattress 12, such that the second layer 14 is sturdier than the first layer 13, thereby preventing the second layer 14 from wearing out due to overuse should the user prefer the firmness of the second layer 14.

The multilayered mattress 12 further comprises a plurality of apertures 15 disposed along a surface of the first layer 13. The plurality of apertures 15 are configured to increase airflow beneath a user sleeping atop the multilayered mattress 12, such that a temperature of the multilayered mattress 12 is decreased, thereby providing the user greater comfort while sleeping. In the illustrated embodiment, the plurality of apertures 15 extends in a grid like manner across the surface of the first layer 13. However, in other embodiments, the plurality of apertures 15 extends across only a portion of the surface of the first layer 13. In the illustrated embodiment, each aperture of the plurality of apertures 15 comprise an equivalent depth, such that each aperture extends fully therethrough the multilayered mattress 12 through both the first layer 13 and second layer 14. However, in other embodiments, the plurality of apertures 15 do not extend fully through the multilayered mattress 12.

The uniform mattress 16 comprises a single layer of uniform firmness throughout. The uniform mattress 16 further comprises a plurality of slots 17 disposed across an upper surface of the uniform mattress 16. In the illustrated embodiment, the plurality of slots 17 are disposed across the width of the uniform mattress 16, such that the depth of each individual slot 17 is uniform. The plurality of slots 17 are disposed along a length of the uniform mattress 16, wherein the length of the uniform mattress 16 is perpendicular to the width of the uniform mattress 16 and extends from a top end of the uniform mattress 16 to the bottom end. Although a width of each slot 17 is uniform, in the illustrated embodiment each depth of each slot 17 is different from another. The plurality of slots 17 are configured to increase comfort for the user and are distributed to provide additional support to the user when lying in bed. In the shown embodiment, the depth of the plurality of slots 17 increase along the length of the uniform mattress 16 to align with the high-pressure areas of a human body when laying on the bed, such as the hips and shoulders, such that the deepest slots 17 are configured to absorb the highest areas of pressure. In this way, the depth of the plurality of slots 17 form two tapered sections disposed to mirror one another across a lateral axis, wherein the lateral axis is parallel to the width of the uniform mattress 16.

Referring now to FIG. 3, there is shown a perspective view of an embodiment of the ventilated adjustable firmness bed wherein each mattress comprises a size half that of a bed frame. In one embodiment, the multilayered mattress 12 comprises three layers, wherein each layer is removably secured to one another, such that the user is able to vertically align each mattress into their desired configuration according to firmness. In the illustrated embodiment, the multilayered mattress 12 and the uniform mattress 13 are each sized to encompass half the width of a traditional bed frame 70, such that an additional multilayered mattress 20 and an additional uniform mattress 24 can be placed proximal to the multilayered mattress 12 and the uniform mattress 13. In the shown embodiment, the multilayered mattress 12 is disposed beneath the uniform mattress 13, whereas the additional multilayered mattress 20 is disposed atop the additional uniform mattress 24.

The additional multilayered mattress 20 comprises a first layer 21, a second layer 22, and a third layer 23. The third layer 23 additionally comprises a plurality of apertures thereon that extend through the third layer 23, similar to the plurality of apertures disposed throughout multilayered mattress 12. Further, the additional uniform mattress 24 comprises a plurality of slots 25 disposed along a length of the additional uniform mattress 24. Thus, the additional multilayered mattress 20 and additional uniform mattress 24 are configured to mirror the composition of the multilayered mattress 12 and uniform mattress 16. In this way, two users sharing a bed can each configure their side of the bed to a desired degree of firmness by aligning each mattress in a preferred vertical orientation.

Referring now to FIG. 4, there is shown a close-up perspective view of an embodiment of the ventilated adjustable firmness bed with the cover pulled back. The ventilated adjustable firmness bed further comprises a cover 18 configured to enclose both the multilayered mattress 12 and the uniform mattress 16. A fastener 19 is disposed on an edge of the cover 18, wherein the fastener 19 is configured to secure the cover 18 around the multilayered mattress 12 and uniform mattress 16. In this way, each mattress is protected from dirt or spills and is not accidentally moved. In the illustrated embodiment, the fastener 19 comprises a zipper, however, other suitable fasteners, such as snaps or clips, are used in other embodiments.

Referring now to FIG. 5A, FIG. 5B, and 5C, there are shown side views of an embodiment of the ventilated adjustable firmness bed in three different arrangements. In operation, a user will take each mattress and vertically align them based on the user's preferred firmness. In one embodiment, as seen in FIG. 5A, the user will first place the uniform mattress 16 atop a bed frame with the plurality of slots facing upward, i.e. not disposed flush against the surface of the bed frame. Then the user will place the multilayered mattress 12 atop the uniform mattress 16 such that the first layer 13 is facing the ceiling and the second layer 14 is flush against the plurality of slots of the uniform mattress 16. This alignment provides a first degree of firmness. In another embodiment, as seen in FIG. 5B, the user will first place the uniform mattress 16 atop a bed frame as described in FIG. 5A. Then the user will place the multilayered mattress 12 atop the uniform mattress 16 such that the second layer 14 is facing the ceiling and the first layer 13 is flush against the plurality of slots of the uniform mattress 16. This alignment provides a second degree of firmness greater than the first degree of firmness. In yet another embodiment, as seen in FIG. 5C, the user will first place the multilayered mattress atop a bed frame such that the first layer 13 is flush against the surface of the bed frame. Then the user will place the uniform mattress 16 atop the multilayered mattress 12 such that the second layer 14 of the multilayered mattress 12 is flush against the uniform mattress 16 and the plurality of slots is facing the ceiling, i.e. not disposed flush against the multilayered mattress 12. This alignment provides a third degree of firmness greater than the second degree of firmness.

In operation, a user will vertically align each mattress by placing a first mattress, such as the uniform mattress, atop a bed frame and then placing a second mattress, such as the multilayered mattress, flush against the uniform mattress to create a desired degree of firmness depending on the alignment of each mattress.

It is therefore submitted that the instant invention has been shown and described in various embodiments. It is recognized, however, that departures may be made within the scope of the invention and that obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art. With respect to the above description then, it is to be realized that the optimum dimensional relationships for the parts of the invention, to include variations in size, materials, shape, form, function and manner of operation, assembly and use, are deemed readily apparent and obvious to one skilled in the art, and all equivalent relationships to those illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification are intended to be encompassed by the present invention.

Therefore, the foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention.
