An adjustable cheek rest for a rifle stock having a butt with opposed major faces and an uppermost crest line separating opposed first and second stock upper surfaces each angling in opposite directions angularly offset away from a vertical direction associated with the uppermost crest line. The cheek rest comprises a base having a base side portion configured to overlay a selected major face of the stock; the base having a base upper portion connected to the base side portion and configured to extend over the uppermost crest line to the opposed upper surface away from the selected major face; the base upper portion having a first base upper portion surface configured to overlay the first stock upper surface, and a second base upper portion surface configured to overlay the second stock upper surface; and a cheek piece connected to the base and movable with respect to the base between a lower position and an upper position, and a plurality of intermediate positions.

CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Pat. Application No. 63/288,572, filed on Dec. 11, 2021, entitled “CHEEK REST ASSEMBLY”, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety for all that is taught and disclosed therein.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to rifle stock accessories.

BACKGROUND AND SUMMARY

With rifles, there is a need to position the shooter’s eye at the proper height relative to the centerline of a rifle scope. Often, designs necessitate modifications to a rifle stock, a requirement for installation.

In addition, height adjustments are made slowly and require the use of tools.

The above disadvantages are addressed by an adjustable cheek rest for a rifle stock having a butt with opposed major faces and an uppermost crest line separating opposed first and second stock upper surfaces each angling in opposite directions angularly offset away from a vertical direction associated with the uppermost crest line. The cheek rest comprises a base having a base side portion configured to overlay a selected major face of the stock; the base having a base upper portion connected to the base side portion and configured to extend over the uppermost crest line to the opposed upper surface away from the selected major face; the base upper portion having a first base upper portion surface configured to overlay the first stock upper surface, and a second base upper portion surface configured to overlay the second stock upper surface; and a cheek piece connected to the base and movable with respect to the base between a lower position and an upper position, and a plurality of intermediate positions.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

FIG. 1 shows the cheek rest assembly installed on the butt end of a rifle stock. It is shown fully raised. Positioning Markers indicate the current height of the Cheek Piece for precise placement when making adjustments. Adjustments are made by loosening both Adjustment Knobs a quarter turn, then pulling the cheek piece up or down to the desired height. The knobs are then tightened to lock the cheek piece in position. The rack and pinion gears serve two purposes while the cheek piece is being adjusted. First, they prevent the cheek piece from tilting and causing binding. Secondly, they hold the cheek piece level so both ends are always maintained at the correct height relative to the positioning markers.

FIG. 2 shows the cheek piece fully lowered.

FIG. 3A shows how the cheek rest assembly is attached to the stock. There is a Small Liner and a Larger Liner, made of 0.03” thick flexible Kydex material designed to conform to the shape of the Stock. They are the foundation of the entire system and include four strips of VHB Tape (Very High Bond) that attach both Liners to the Stock. The Saddle is made of sheet metal, and is attached to the Large Liner with six rivets. The top end of the Tray connects to the top of the Saddle with four screws. The bottom end of the Tray attaches to the Small Liner with six rivets.

FIG. 3B illustrates the an exploded view of the cheek rest assembly.

FIG. 4A shows slots in the top portion of the Tray where fasteners pass through and attach it to the Saddle. The Slots help to account for variations in width and taper among different stocks by allowing the bottom portion of the Tray to be moved and aligned against the stock during installation. It ensures that the VHB Tape on the Small Liner comes in full contact with the stock.

FIG. 4B illustrates an exploded view of the slots on the top portion of the tray.

FIGS. 5 and 6 show placement of VHB Tape strips on the Liners.

FIG. 7 shows the moving parts of the cheek rest assembly and how they are assembled. The Cheek Piece is placed over the threaded posts, the Gear Bracket and Pinion Gear are assembled with two Dowel Pins and placed over the Threaded Posts, followed by two Disk Springs, then two Adjustment Knobs. The Disk Springs provide tension when both Adjustment Knobs are loosened ¼ turn, to make height adjustments to the Cheek Piece. The tension maintains proper mesh between the Rack and Pinion Gears while creating a small amount of friction to prevent gravity from dropping the Cheek Piece out of a desired position while adjustments are being made to set the height.

Claims

1. An adjustable cheek rest for a rifle stock having a butt with opposed major faces and an uppermost crest line separating opposed first and second stock upper surfaces each angling in opposite directions angularly offset away from a vertical direction associated with the uppermost crest line, the cheek rest comprising:

a base having a base side portion configured to overlay a selected major face of the stock;
the base having a base upper portion connected to the base side portion and configured to extend over the uppermost crest line to the opposed upper surface away from the selected major face;
the base upper portion having a first base upper portion surface configured to overlay the first stock upper surface, and a second base upper portion surface configured to overlay the second stock upper surface; and
a cheek piece connected to the base and movable with respect to the base between a lower position and an upper position, and a plurality of intermediate positions.
